  • In the spring of 1781, American forces under General Nathanael Greene rolled up the British garrisons in the interior of the Carolinas one by one. The last British holdout was the fortified town of Ninety Six, in the foothills of western South Carolina. On June 12, with the end in sight for the Brits, a rider brought word that a relief column under Lord Francis Rawdon was on the way from Charleston. Greene decided to lift the siege but not before trying one final assault on the night of June 18, an attack that failed terribly.
Tom Hand, creator and publisher of Americana Corner, discusses the siege of Ninety Six and why it still matters today.

Thank you for posting this. I took both my parents to the site, and to Eutaw Springs as well, a couple of decades ago before they died. We visited, wanting to see the place where a relative had been during the Revolution. My parents learned after they were married that they were something like 5th cousins through this relative. He was an Ulster Scots-Irish immigrant who joined the Continental Army in VA and was a private during the war at these two battles, according to his pension papers. I guess I can say I'm glad he survived!

More brave men saving our country. We should be grateful to them and to all veterans on Veterans' Day.

General Greene is one of my favorites! Also here in NY we always pronounce the Polish General's last name as "koss-she-ew-skew...not sure if that is correct. Does anyone out there know?
