Settling the Ohio Frontier
In the 1780s, American pioneers began moving into the Ohio frontier and met resistance from Indian tribes who claimed the land as their own. The clash between these two disparate cultures resulted in the Northwest Indian War, the first war ever fought by the new constitutional government. Determined to protect the pioneers and encourage settlement, President Washington tried to purchase land from the tribes rather than committing to an expensive war. In January 1789, Territorial Governor Arthur St. Clair convinced several chiefs to sign the Treaty of Fort Harmar, which essentially ceded all of Ohio to the United States. But the Shawnee, encouraged by promises of British support, refused to sign the treaty or acknowledge its legitimacy.
Tom Hand, creator and publisher of Americana Corner, explores the clash between settlers and Indian tribes on the Ohio frontier, and why it still matters today.

The Jay Treaty Cools Rising Tensions Between America and England

While the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution, two key provisions laid out in the agreement had not been followed by England since its signing. The British had never evacuated their forts in the Northwest Territory and, to make matters worse, they encouraged their Indian allies to terrorize any American settlers in the region. They had also continued their habit of taking British-born...

The Slavery Question at the Constitutional Convention
มุมมอง 66Kหลายเดือนก่อน
One of the most troublesome questions at the Constitutional Convention was what to do about slavery. Not whether it should be abolished by the new Constitution, but whether slaves would be counted in the census and if the states or the central government would control the institution and what that control would look like. All delegates recognized the terrible inconsistency between slavery and t...

The Mayflower II was a very big deal in the late 50s. My mother couldn't wait to get us to Plymouth and see it! Wonderful historic area to this day.
Can I please suggest changing the title to ,” colonizing the …” settling makes it sound too quaint and empty . Thank you if you do .
Walked those fields many years ago while living in Bedford. Thank you for bringing back some good memories. 😊
Another excellent episode! Unfortunately today's educators hardly, if ever touch on the NW expansion or the conflict between settlers and native Americans. Thanks for breaking it down with accurate images to go along with Tom's excellent storytelling. The music is top notch too!

Can you please tell me how I can attach a modern-made flag to a wooden flag pole using an 18th century method? How were flags attached to poles when carried into battle or mounted in a fortress?
Where is Michael Cresap? Do you believe he was part of the Yellow Creek Massacre, as did Chief Logan? Or do you think it was Colonel Overstreet who massacred Logan’s family? I’ve been a member of the Cresap Society forever as a descendant. When I was little, he definitely was blamed and my family were ashamed.
Wonderful to discover your YouTuve platform! Thoroughly enjoy the information and education!!

I have the Lees in my family as well! What I find fascinating is Robert E Lee’s military congressional records describing him as a dark complexioned man 😮. Also, him having a ‘negro’ half-brother. I’ve been forced to completely rethink/relearn what’s been taught about a lot of history.
Thanks so much for this chapter.
Thanks for another excellent video! I had no idea that the men at the Convention even considered writing federal control of slavery in our Constitution.
Lovely video, sir! Very informative and enjoyable!

What??? "How our patriots were able to overcome so much adversity" Rebels:20 warships with 350 cannon plus 3000 men(plus 20 supply ships) Royal Navy: 3 warships with 58 cannon plus 700 British Army men (eventually relieved by 6 more ships) The Rebels lost the battle. Interestingly they only talk about the first half of the campaign on here, there is a couple of more informative vids on utube.
Thanks for a superb video! I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the U.S. Constitution is one of the most important documents in history, but Gouverneur Morris's prose raises it to the realms of great literature.

Why does France get all the credit in high school history classes? That's not rhetorical - I really wish someone would explain this.
Did not know there was a fugitive slave act that early on. I only knew of the one in the 1850's that helped precipitate the Civil War.
Fantastic! Thank you.
Thank you so much for this information. I've been enjoying your videos and learning about the first century of our country and I find it so fascinating.
