The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions
In response to the Alien and Sedition Acts passed by the Federalist-controlled Congress in July 1798, Democratic-Republicans howled long and loud about the legislation that they viewed as an assault on both their party and the Constitution. They immediately turned to their leader, Vice President Thomas Jefferson, to counter these acts and, if possible, turn them to their political advantage. Jefferson enlisted the support of James Madison, his fellow Virginian and brilliant political protégé. The two men created their rebuttals separately with Jefferson’s version being fairly radical, while Madison drafted a more balanced argument against the acts.

The Alien and Sedition Acts
มุมมอง 118Kวันที่ผ่านมา
In 1798, with the specter of war with France on the horizon and 25,000 French nationals residing in the United States, the Federalists who controlled Congress worried French belligerency could lead to problems, and consequently, passed four laws called the Alien and Sedition Acts. As a package, their stated purpose was national security, but there is little doubt that the Federalists also hoped...
The XYZ Affair

In 1798, worried that emotions would push France and America into an open war, President John Adams sent a delegation consisting of John Marshall, Elbridge Gerry, and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney to Paris to try and calm these rising tensions. The delegation arrived in Paris in early October but were denied a meeting for weeks. They were finally approached by three French officials whose code na...
The Rise of John Adams
มุมมอง 83K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
John Adams was one of America’s greatest patriots from the founding generation and may have contributed more to America gaining her independence than anyone other than George Washington. Upon graduation from Harvard in 1755, Adams taught school for one year but soon began to study law and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1759. After Parliament passed the Stamp Act in 1765, Adams joined ...
The Election of 1796
มุมมอง 82Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The first contested United States presidential election took place in the fall of 1796, pitting Thomas Jefferson against Vice President John Adams. Arguably, no presidential election in the country’s history has ever featured a choice between two such American titans. Jefferson was the leader of the Democratic-Republicans who were pro-French and favored strong states’ rights. Adams was the favo...
The Legacy of George Washington

No man has had a greater impact on the United States than George Washington. This quintessential American carried the country through eight long years of the American Revolution and devoted another eight years to establishing the new constitutional government as its first president. Washington’s Farewell Address - Debt and Foreign Entanglements

In his Farewell Address, President George Washington advised America to remain fiscally prudent and to avoid permanent foreign alliances that could pull the country into a costly war. Washington’s Farewell Address - The Background
มุมมอง 108Kหลายเดือนก่อน
President George Washington’s Farewell Address is one of our nation’s greatest documents. It was not really an address but rather a letter written by President Washington to his fellow citizens and first published in Claypoole’s American Daily Advertiser on September 19, 1796, near the end of his second term. Tom Hand, creator and publisher of Americana Corner, discusses the factors that led to...

Following St. Clair’s disaster at the Battle of the Wabash, a reluctant Congress finally agreed to President George Washington’s request to create a force capable of conquering the Northwest Territory. In the 1780s, American pioneers began moving into the Ohio frontier and met resistance from Indian tribes who claimed the land as their own. No idea this happened. Thank you!
I see no violations against the freedom of speech because our freedoms aren't absolute - all things in life have boundaries or limitations. We should never allow America to give into chaos or anarchy. Thanks ❤😊🇺🇸🙏👍💪

Very interesting. I have forgotten a lot about the alien and sedition acts i think that was 5th grade for me.

Good morning, hope you had a good Christmas everyone and hopefully the New Year will be fruitful and peaceful for everybody.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏Religious freedom was about encouraging the worship of the one and only GOD by not favoring one religion over another, it was not about encouraging the worship of any idol. And freedom of speech, the freedom to assemble, etc, the founders had something kind of noble in mind.
Thank you. 😊
Thanks for watching! Take care, and may your love of country lead you.

Hear! Hear! Well done. Washington is first - and there is no second. Mt. Rushmore was supposed to be a carving of Washington only.
Great video on an important but too-little-studied document. Washington's advice against "permanent, inveterate antipathies" and "passionate attachment" to other nations is perhaps the most neglected aspect of his teaching.
A legacy of contradiction and brutality. Weather it was the whiskey rebellion or the attempt to self enrich that the northwest ordinance prevented. I think his greatest legacy is that of his farewell address with the foresight of political parties and the uncaring brutality he used in trying to capture and silence his run away slave ona judge. Much like the country he helped to build it is an amalgamation of many problems and inherent contradictions of human violence and class struggle.
Typical. Make sure to not mention that he freed his slaves upon his death. He also died a Catholic.
If only the people of the United States would stand up to the Second Plank of the Communist Manifesto that way.
@@mcq1125doubtful. No, George Washington was an Anglican, not Catholic: Oath In the 1750s, Washington had to sign an oath to prove he was not Catholic and supported the Anglican Church. The oath stated that he did not believe in Transubstantiation, a Catholic doctrine. Attendance Washington attended services at many churches, including Catholic churches, but he was primarily Anglican. He also attended services at churches associated with other Christian groups, such as Presbyterians, Quakers, Congregationalists, Baptists, and Dutch Reformed. Relationship with the Catholic Church Washington had a cordial relationship with the Catholic Church and its members. He attended a Catholic service, donated money to the construction of a Catholic church, and corresponded with the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States. Washington's religious life is complex and debated, and some historians believe he was not an orthodox Christian.
Washington was a man of his times. You're indulging in the history "disorder" known as "presentism."
The Whiskey Rebellion should have never happened, Washington’s error wan not to oppose Hamilton’s tax proposal in the first place. The way he handled the rebellion itself was perfect though, as not a single shot was fired. Washington sought the return of Ona Judge for economic reasons; since she was a dower’s slave, he had to pay compensation for her loss. Him pursuing her return in secret is not surprising at all, as Washington believed in abolition and in no way advocated for the continuation of slavery. Whoever possessed the means to speculate in land did so and I do not understand what is the problem with one trying to enrich himself. He erred as a General and as President, but his legacy is positive to say the least: won American independence against a stronger and more resourceful enemy by understanding he had to preserve its army in the first place and fight a war of attrition; he kept the country united in its infancy, when it was most fragile; managed to avoid getting entangled in European wars/alliances; expanded America’s commerce and reduced the debt; emancipated all his slaves in his will. I do not know what you wanted him to do more. Outright ban slavery at the federal level? Unrealistic and unobtainable due to the social and economic constraints at the time, that is why when the Founders tried, they almost always failed. Your Marxist interpretation of American history as one of violence and class struggle is naive to say the least.
I just read about this incredible feat by Henry Knox from a book called 1776 by David McCullough and that brought me here. So freraking awesome. Our history is filled with amazing people!

Happy Thanksgiving It is a shame that America has forgotten the GREAT MAN'S WORDS
Man, o man; how the Democrat party and the gutless weasel Republicans has ignored the advice to avoid debt: our currency is nothing but debt; and our entanglement in foreign wars drives the creation of more and more debt.

It can, just not peacefully or democratically.

Pfft. America has always been politically divided, except during war time, with the obvious exception of Vietnam
This is a message for our time as much as any other.

Terrific presentation.
Thank is such a great newsletter and channel. I love the valuable history that many have forgotten or never learned. And, I also like the attention to detail, balanced with the short form installments of information. To use a food analogy, it’s a bit like a nutritional supplement, combined with an appetizer. It prompts you to go research further.
Also, American Corner is unapologetically patriotic about the good parts of our country’s history, and objective about the bad parts, both of which we desperately need right now.m Historical subversion has gone on far too long; we need preservation.
Thanks for all that you do and thanks for being an American citizen. God bless ❤🇺🇸🙏

Sad to hear. Poor planning, training, supplies, etc., lead to an event that is part of Ohio’s unflattering start.

The Mayflower II was a very big deal in the late 50s. My mother couldn't wait to get us to Plymouth and see it! Wonderful historic area to this day.
Can I please suggest changing the title to ,” colonizing the …” settling makes it sound too quaint and empty . Thank you if you do .
The Northwestern Territories were not colonies, thus settle is correct. If someone were to establish a SETTLEMENT in the middle of the desert in Arizona, they would be SETTLING the territory, not colonizing it.
'waring for the' would fit the video better, because it has a lot of battles and conflicts, and some exploration here and there.
