As a relatively experienced ultra runner, your attitude is perfect for this sport. You should be so proud of yourself. Welcome to the ultra family ❤

Congratulations on your first ultra! Video idea - do a breakdown of your kit for the ultra and talk about what worked and didn’t work, what you like and didn’t like about your kit.

Just did the Taupo Ultra 50km (in New Zealand) on the weekend. 7 hours 23 mins including 895m of climbing. This was my 3rd 50k and 4th time running 50km+. The mental side is the hardest part every time and the hardest part to train for. Massive congrats for joining the Ultra Club. It's a cool but crazy club to be in. 🙂

As I prepared for my first Marathon I did Pilates with an instructor one-on-one, using Pilates machines, each week. This really strengthened my core & legs. I had less problems with lower back pain after running long distances, because of these Pilates sessions.

its really inspiring to see you keep running after struggling at the early stages of the race. Running 50K is really hard and it is supposed to feel hard. That doesn't mean that we can't do it. It just means that we have to muster more mental and physical strenght to do it. That's why I love running, because its this exercice of facing hardships and overcoming them. I love your videos btw and congrats on your first ultra.

Oh, I can so relate! All summer when I did trail running, I just felt like I lost my ability to run. Even short distances felt like a challenge, trail running is definitely so much harder than road running, but so nice being in nature. So maaaad respect, Emily, that you actually pushed through and did a 50k! Congrats, girl! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

congratulations on your first 50K, I was there too . Its was hard especially along the path in Bournemouth dodging the people, buggies, dogs and the blown mounds of sand.
Ultramarathon running is fabulous abd it does become addictive.
    Once again huge congratulations 🎊

This happened to me Emily on my first big ultra earlier this year. By halfway I had a little cry and wanted to go home.
Ultras are just so chuffing hard! And they last so long!
    (But they’re also AMAZING)

Hi Emily. Well done indeed. I think you did a cracking job! I’m a bit older than you and didn’t start running until I was 47. I did my first 33 miles this year at 50 years old. It turned out to be the hottest day of the year and it took me 8.5 hours but I didn’t give up. and finished in time. I also learned loads and I am so proud of the achievement. I’m with you though the marathon was easier lol!!!! I will follow your example!!! Excellent .

Awesome Challenge. Well done on completing your first Ultra. Hope you are proud of your achievement. You should be. I much prefer trail events vs road events. It feels to me as though a road event is about the destination whereas a trail event is about the journey, if that makes any sense at all. Recovery is the key now, but it would be really interesting to follow the recovery phase of this challenge. How you are feeling physically and mentally. What you are and aren't doing etc. A massive thanks again for taking us on the journey with you, and huge kudos to you.👍

the video i've been waiting for. HUGE WELL DONE!! That is a cracking time for a 50km, let alone your first 50km! 👌🏻
trail running is much nicer (and much more friendly) than road running for sure. And with trail (and ultras), people expect you to walk so I always feel happier there.
And a first ultra is so hard as it's very much unknown territory. Can your body go that far, how will you get through, what will you eat, where are the aid stations... I did my first one on my own and it was hard trying to dig deep while you're by yourself but with people coming past and saying Hi etc, it really made a difference. I just took it slowly and tried to enjoy it as much as possible (and came in at over 9 hours I hasten to add so yours was definitely not slow by comparison).
just thinking about your body being tired and your legs heavy - prob very much to do with your period I would say. I *always* feel lethargic and "meh" on long runs just before i'm due on. Maybe one to just note and check in. I wonder if you'd have been halfway through your cycle, whether this would have felt any easier at all (minus the wind on the seafront though, that is always a killer!)?
Jam sarnie & salt & vinegar crisps is IDEAL nutrition for an ultra, it's got everything you need!
other challenges, come and do Oxford Half with me next year :) But other than that, i'd love to see you sign up for one of the Pegasus Ultra Running company runs (i've done The Ridum twice before and highly recommend it, in Sept next year). x

You sound like surprised but is it not logical that you would struggle 50k ultramarathon since it is just basically a very long trail run and you actually are only trained for the road? I am basing this just on viewing one video of yours. Maybe you actually trained for trail…. Regardless very well done!

So great to follow your journey. I'm thinking of signing up to a marathon, partly thank to you! 🫣
    Also re: running in sand.
I did a 10k race with my sis like 5 years ago, and around 600m left i told her we would sprint (or at least go slightly faster). Then we arrived to The Sand. We did, in fact, NOT sprint to the end. It was so difficult!! 😅
