I used to play a lot of Elite: Dangerous some months ago. Now, I don't have the time anymore and I just have a shitty notebook which makes it really hard to play this gorgeous game. I love Elite Dangerous and I love to know what's going on in the game,. You're the only one who can still connect me with Elite Dangerous. Thanks a lot for that and keep up this amazing work! Cheers!
Entirely true. 99+% of the community won't get involved, and huge %age won't even know anything about supposedly the most amazing discovery's in the ED universe (eg: Thargoid bases), unless they login into the right youtube pages or forums. The majority of players will make the choice to carry on playing in tired (basically ignored) 2+ year old mechanics... Or not play at all.
I'd like to show an interest in more interesting/varied/deeper exploration... mining... trading... combat missions... NPC wingmen... Piracy with a hint of meaning and depth... Hell a more dynamic and interesting BGS. In comparison, I'm not that fussed about bread crumb story telling taking place at a limping snails pace, with point and click depth involved...
this game is utterly amazing! it brings real tears to my eyes! for 25yrs I waited for a game like this! Thank you Ant for figuring out all this out, for the simple minds like me!
It's a shame that I'm on vacation. I'll have to watch these amazing updates until I get home to try it all out. Keep the updates coming :-) Honestly even if I was home I'd still be watching ;-)
It's crazy that ppl manage to find out so much in such short time. Community is awesome. I am one of explorers that find new site today using Unknown Link :) have a good hunt guys!. P.S. If every site is Thargoid Mothership we are fucked :D
I can assure you, they are probably not. Those motherships should be a lot bigger. You know the normal Thargoid ships? Going from what we know and old lore (seeing as how much of it is similiar, I expect the following aspect to be as well), a mothership is able to hold hundreds, if not thousands of "normal" sized Thargoid ships.
So this is normal Ship? I know that last time we encounter just scouting party. And those ships that interdict players are in fact just scouts. Who knows maybe they just some kind of buildings like ObsidianAnt said.
TheProrokpl I think those ships we encounter fulfill combat roles as well. We pretty much know that Thargoids use swarm-tactics with smaller ships. Either the things we see on the planets are based or some sort of cruisers. And yes, last war was just a skirmish with a scout fleet, as far as we know. Perhaps those planetary things are remnants of the last war, who knows. We'll find out quite soon, probably.
lol he makes great videos every day and ive been working on ONE video for 5 months...still can't wait to finish it though i don't give a shit that it is no big deal
brought my friend to your videos, we love you man. very detailed and entertainingly brillaint. keep up with the videos. have you anything advice on ships. iv the cobra mrk 3
People are complaining but I think this whole setup is honestly very cool, it feels like an alien race is unraveling itself. Just because we can't experience it on our own doesn't mean it doesn't have value, it's essentially breaking news in the Elite lore that you can then revisit in the game world for yourself
I dont know if this has been discovered, but I figured I would share anyway. Than other day when I was getting me unknown probe (Xbox one version), I met another commander who said this was his second time going to the site. He also said he made a recording and shared it to the two biggest Xbox elite dangerous clubs. This recording supposedly includes him leaving the structure after activating the map, and a thargoid flower ship showing up, scanning Everyone, and leaving
As time goes on Fdev are getting craftier!! They won't dare to show us pictures of anything anymore because commanders find the sites too quick, so they have moved on to sound! I'm impressed with the work that will have gone in to the design of these puzzles though.
I'll go with you in that theory. first time i saw this places all i could think was the unknown ship at the barnacle and that this is the result of long going "construction" of the site. This isn't a crash site, its a barnacle grown up or still growing
Is there a way of using the galactic map in terms of typing system names within vr , maybe like copy and paste links from the information given from commanders on frontiers website forums or do I just have to put my hmd off and type it all in from viewing it on the monitor?
I wanna know what the best audio analyzer for decoding the Thargoid messages in Elite Dangerous is, most other ones leave the top or bottom out of range or something. A more accessible, maybe borwser based program would open these mysteries up to anyone playing.
Cheers Obs. Great video. Do these links work for all alien sites? So, once you have one, you can use them to locate any new alien site (systems with ammonia worlds would be a good place to start)?
They have to be able to know, that we are able to encrypt these messages and visit their structures. And that, just opens up a whole new jar of questions...
They are too large to be ship crash sites, they have to be what the Barnacles will grow into given enough time. And the scavengers possibly placed there by Thargoids at a certain point to do the more intricate assembly of pieces?
I just cant agree, with the way the outer structures and the internals are laid out with very minor looking damage to the central structure and the 'arms' the damage most likely of occurred because of the many many decades of neglect and wasting away after the Thargoids vanished after the first war.
ObsidianAnt yeah, kinda think it has something to do with algorithms and audio to visual translation ?, like the audio to visual translation done with the unknown artefact.
The chirps from the unknown link have different sections, the starter marks(can be ignored), the high and low chirps, and the separators/ratio marks(sounds like a dolphin chirp). Voids are breaks for different lines. The high pitch marks are translated into 0's, the lows into 1's. They are in groups of threes. From that you have binary that if converted into octal gives ratios that then give decimals. Take the decimals and multiply by one alien measurement unit ( the distance between Merope and the source Col 70 system, which is 871.02 light years, which was decoded several months back using same method above except with unknown probes) to get distance from the system you are in. After that it is comparing XYZ cords to stars that match that distance and then checking using the sounds and see if the link points a laser to the next structure, and then it begins again to find the next one...
Put the Unknown into the Unknown so that the Unknown will Unknown then the Unknown will Unknown allowing you to Unknown which will let you Unknown onto the Unknown, what will happen next is Unknown
How to explain all this... I think there's room to satisfy the MENSA crowd and *also* give everyone else a slice of the narrative cake. Let the forumites find the stuff first but throw the solo-ers a bone in the form of chained missions to go from UA->UP->Barnacles->Crash Sites->Ruins->Alien Bases. The key for me is, none of this would matter if there was a cool mission chain I could follow. I don't care that someone else finds something first (either alone or in a group) while I'm asleep, I just want to be a part of it. Are they trying to frikkin' transcend the video game medium or something here?!
I've found a system that says allegiance thargoid. I've never seen a system with allegiance to the thargoid before can anyone tell me if they found an others cos this is the only one I could find
indeed incredible work. 19 sites now, geez! starting to feel they are losing their uniqueness. Hopefully the 'map' thing we saw isnt a location of each site, as that would mean there is 1,000's of sites. I think they are some kind-of ship, but you might be right - as in a base.

As much as i loved this in the game, i do stress about it needing an outside way of using it, i think personally it shoupd have an ingame method to decipher otherwise it is only put in for a very select few of the community. not eveyone has the playtime, nor the patience for all these puzzles that get solved more on paper and using outside programs which is really just making the game feel more empty due to no ingame method 😢

@Bugman_oO In the context of all that's been happening with the thargoids lately, someone who's not gonna know (or necessarily want) to use a spectrograph or any other out of game tools to figure out hidden messages to find out what to do.
@Dudebro actually it would be pretty fun, because then I'd be seeing it for the first time and it would be that much more special, instead of having to follow guides on TH-cam or the forums. Once again, my personal opinion.
i haven't played the game in a year but i have loved watching these. Im glad they are complicated, makes obsidian's videos much more entertaining and baffling. you might like NMS instead of Elite if you want things easier.
darius linen so your on route to where the thargoids are suspected to havr came from? send a signal and let us know when the hoard reachs you, this way we have aprox 500 human jumps worth of time to fly the other direction 😂😂
Having to decode audio signals to discover anything. Something the vast majority of games won't be able to do, or even think to do. It's getting frustrating that they're basically locking all but a small group of players out or discovering anything.
Then go play, WOW. In that game every player gets to be a special snowflake. That makes everything feel super lame imo, i have never been more interested in the background lore a video game than i have with Elite for your very compalint.
All pros in my book that kind of thing is why i bought elite in the first place. Scarcity is what makes things interesting. I coudlnt give a damn about most of the story or background because any player can experiance it at any time. Which just makes it feel so fake.
Ah, I see. I do agree with OP that the having to download external software to do something in-game is very lazy on the dev's part and isn't good for the game. No complaints about the scarcity part though, in an exploration oriented game, scarcity is kind of necessary. The part that does suck about it is the requirement to be absolutely devoted to the game, putting a ton of time into it and all. I've pretty much stopped playing because I'd rather just do some programming than commit a large amount of time to a game in hope of getting lucky. Instead, if the system were more along the lines of how the generation ships were discovered, I'd be more inclined to play the game.
Once 2.4 arrives, Fdev should think about doing a storyline based ED game. This game now has enough to satisfy the 40 hr game players, taken aside the steep learning curve. So they could offer missions when a new player gets to a reasonable level that encourages them to figure out, storyline based, not maths, or laborious, time consuming exploration. Just enough to nudge them in the right direction. I'm thinking of new players who don't use forums or go to youtube for ideas.
leslie white I agree. Worse yet, they don't provide any in game methods of decoding the signals. Mass exclusion in their design. It's like if WoW designed entire raids for one guild and one guild only, yet charge everyone the same.
That's the point. They give the trailblazers all the fun of first time discovery of and then let the community to solve the puzzles. I doubt this would be much different from RL. Most people wouldn't care about all that hassle, they would rather just continue with their business. And when more information comes out they can get bothered if they feel like it's worth their time. I like this game for the exact reason that it gives me crap ton of choices.
Out of the game? I mean all you technically need to solve this puzzle is the game, pen & paper and Elite Dangerous forums. I'm perfectly fine with that.
I can't find this by myself... this have to be possible WITHOUT other things that the game only. This is a crap because without internet and other programs we cannot solve puzzle. I am not agree with that. (sorry about my bad english)
I used to play a lot of Elite: Dangerous some months ago. Now, I don't have the time anymore and I just have a shitty notebook which makes it really hard to play this gorgeous game. I don't bother doing this myself. Therefore i watch ObsidianAnt.
The Thargoids communicate by beat boxing
A thousand times YES.
Captain Oblivious brilliant 😂
The Canonn Research Group is on a roll, props to them.
They have time machines.
I think you meant to say "too much free time"... :P
Yep... Meanwhile the remaining 99.9% of the community can carry on carrying X to Y and farming RES sites with 2+yr old gameplay...
Entirely true. 99+% of the community won't get involved, and huge %age won't even know anything about supposedly the most amazing discovery's in the ED universe (eg: Thargoid bases), unless they login into the right youtube pages or forums.

mikezbr news flash! This game has been out since the late 80s. Lol
This is why I love Elite. Those riddles are really fascinating 😃

I'm going to say these are outposts of some sort, initial stages of a colony. When those little eggs hatch...
I just found one of those alien structures accidentally while hunging for materials. I saw "unidentified structure" and went to check it out. :)
since thargoid technology is organic, i believe that they grow their ships and these sites are not bases but ships under construction.
God damn art from 4:40 onwards.
Elite Dangerous is art
lol he makes great videos every day and ive been working on ONE video for 5 months...still can't wait to finish it though i don't give a shit that it is no big deal
GalaxyTraveler let me know when you finish your video I'd like to see it and you never know it could be a big deal.
Same
@Billy Dingwell - exactly what I was thinking - this is gonna be awesome! ;-)
thanks for keeping us updated with this. I have no hope of following this on my own.
Nice video / tutorial for the new activities regarding thargoids, absidian. FLy safe =)
I started my reply before watching the entire video.. good video thanks.
brought my friend to your videos, we love you man. very detailed and entertainingly brillaint. keep up with the videos. have you anything advice on ships. iv the cobra mrk 3
This shit is cool, I'm glad you do such a great job and reporting these findings
People are complaining but I think this whole setup is honestly very cool, it feels like an alien race is unraveling itself. I'm pretty sure these alien structures are actually ships waiting for eggs to hatch and take off, using the links to find each other.
As time goes on Fdev are getting craftier!! They won't dare to show us pictures of anything anymore because commanders find the sites too quick, so they have moved on to sound! I'm impressed with the work that will have gone in to the design of these puzzles though.

Cheers Obs. Great video. Do these links work for all alien sites? So, once you have one, you can use them to locate any new alien site (systems with ammonia worlds would be a good place to start)?
@obsidianant ant where do I get the unknown signals from? i scanned the unknown device and it did nothing. I got the unknown link.
Lol, I think the ULs are pointing to a direction asking us to stay away from there and here we are, going to that very location it warned us about :D
This is so interesting!
Just watched the movie Arrival. Exited to see how thing will go with the Goids :D.
They have to be able to know, that we are able to encrypt these messages and visit their structures. And that, just opens up a whole new jar of questions...
oh shit that's was not the right time to go visit Sgr-A.
Btw, great edit!
Unknown Link has a sick beat 1:15.
Perthshire? Is that where your from? Just noticed you had it on the side of your Asp.
Do you loose the signal if you log out? I've been to the base and scanned the central thingy, but I cave no such signals in my messages...
The pure amount of sites is exponentially increasing. How long have these been released?!
not even a week
They already are catching up to Guardian site numbers.
That message the link makes sounds like a killer beat. would make a good song. Someone get on that please.
They are too large to be ship crash sites, they have to be what the Barnacles will grow into given enough time. And the scavengers possibly placed there by Thargoids at a certain point to do the more intricate assembly of pieces?
I just cant agree, with the way the outer structures and the internals are laid out with very minor looking damage to the central structure and the 'arms' the damage most likely of occurred because of the many many decades of neglect and wasting away after the Thargoids vanished after the first war.
how do you even de-crypt that audio message played by the Unknown Link ?!?
To be honest, I have absolutely no idea - but it involves doing some very complicated maths outside the game.
ObsidianAnt yeah, kinda think it has something to do with algorithms and audio to visual translation ?, like the audio to visual translation done with the unknown artefact.
i just seem to be dumb at this point, nvm my above comment
The chirps from the unknown link have different sections, the starter marks(can be ignored), the high and low chirps, and the separators/ratio marks(sounds like a dolphin chirp). Voids are breaks for different lines.
The high pitch marks are translated into 0's, the lows into 1's. They are in groups of threes.

Malic Tolsen .....0_0
a remarkable genius right here 1
do we get the same content inside the chambers of the site ie. Galactic map
is there any website where i can find the latest news about the thargoid bases and such ? sorta like a liveticker for soccer ?
Galnet in-game, Cannon forum posts, here.
canonn forum is a joke. Forum posts are at least 4 months old at best
Reminds me of the Hive ships in Stargate Atlantis
These structures totally look like remnants of ancient Zerg hatcheries. And the eggs!
This is so very well done by Frontier :)
Hmmm FDEV have said things were going to snowball quickly in this update and after this it certainly seems to be the case.
I want you to narrate the voice for the next hitchhikers guide to the galaxy lol
Ok ima try it, wish me luck lads
If the door on the central structure doesn't open for you, does that mean it's non-functioning or do you need to bring stuff(UP/UA) with you?
You need a UA or UP to open the door...
Put the Unknown into the Unknown so that the Unknown will Unknown then the Unknown will Unknown allowing you to Unknown which will let you Unknown onto the Unknown, what will happen next is Unknown
But how do you know all this?
That's Unknown.
And don't even talk to me about special snowflakes. The core of the bleeding thing is; David has been sharing his love of space with us in an awesome creative medium since 1984 and there's a problem right now where it's turning into: the Boy's Club get the best stuff.
Elite and Frontier were sandboxes, so there wasn't any story anyway. ED *could* have just been this.
First Encounters introduced some great narrative beats. You could manage to get in on the Thargoid business, find out about INRA etc... But it wasn't implemented in the most accessible way...
Now, I'm playing an amazing modern version of this game series I love, but the coolest stuff is off-limits to me (and I've been "contributing" on the forums). That kind of sucks. I think they thought "The Community" would be some sort of magical gift in the form of user generated content they could just seed. I'm not a special snowflake, I just feel like I'll never see the VIP lounge because I'll somehow never be worthy to see it.
My Dream is; I hope they put the planet Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy into ED, that'd be sweet. But I don't know if we'll ever see that state.
Which ship is OA using in this video?
+LLO Lo That is an Asp Explorer.
Try putting that audio through one of those moris code apps
The large 'arms' are rather reminiscent of whale skeletons...or at least the skulls. They almost do seem like the remains of some massive creature.
plot twist we've just discovered where the Thargoids grow their ships
The eggs reminds me of the face hugger eggs... pretty creepy and don't ever go close to it !
how's the frame rate on ps4 pro?
I don't have specific frame rate numbers, but it is a lot better on the pro than the regular PS4.
I think these are their ships in the maturation process... it's well known that the thargoids have living technology
I also think that the barnacles are the preliminary presentation of these older, and therefore much more mature, tech sites.
There are so many unknowns in this video.
I have to say this is very cool :-p
Maybe a crashed generation ship?
or maybe landed and buried intentionally. These site seem to still be active at a very low state. Perhaps they're on standby...waiting for the right moment to deploy..
has anyone tried playing the sound files to the ancient artefacts?
nice
As much as i loved this in the game, i do stress about it needing an outside way of using it, i think personally it shoupd have an ingame method to decipher otherwise it is only put in for a very select few of the community. not eveyone has the playtime, nor the patience for all these puzzles that get solved more on paper and using outside programs which is really just making the game feel more empty due to no ingame method 😢
I suck at maths, so thanks.
I'm liking the direction this game is heading.
RNG is not on your side my friend.
New theory, what if the alien sites are the capital ships but under growth. Since its organic what if the barnacle is the first stage of the Thargoid ship life cycle then it "grows up"
Now i will call UL - Dubstep-machine.
Obsidian, why are you going into the structure? Why oh why man. Get are far away from those bases as possible. Run man. Run away. :)
just a thought, what if the alien ships *ARE* the aliens?
You hear the Unknown Link trying to free Style and Beat Box
Looks like a sixteen pack of Thargoid Cola.
maybe the reason they are called "unknown link" is because the device "links" all the structures to each other.
idk just a theory
And we still don't have a proper liner that can carry corrosive items ...
As cool as this is, I don't think any normal commander would be able to figure this all out on their own, which makes it kind of a pain in the ass to enjoy something that other people are figuring out for me. I don't wanna be spoon fed something, but I also don't wanna have to use outside resources just to figure out what is going on. But that's just me.
Wouldnt be any fun if you could figure it all out yourself
Define "normal commander".
@Bugman_oO In the context of all that's been happening with the thargoids lately, someone who's not gonna know (or necessarily want) to use a spectrograph or any other out of game tools to figure out hidden messages to find out what to do.

you might like NMS instead of Elite if you want things easier.
there maybe something bigger after completing the mystery... maybe a whole planet of thargoids...
well I'm past bubble nebula and I don't plan on coming back
darius linen so your on route to where the thargoids are suspected to havr came from? send a signal and let us know when the hoard reachs you, this way we have aprox 500 human jumps worth of time to fly the other direction 😂😂
Dave Skillz Gaming you got it
I've not been able to receive the unknown signal message... Yes I've completed the mission to recieve it...
Curiouser and Curiouser??
Having to decode audio signals to discover anything. Something the vast majority of games won't be able to do, or even think to do. It's getting frustrating that they're basically locking all but a small group of players out or discovering anything.

Yes. Unfortunetly you cant see the 2nd half because he deleted it.
Ah, I see. I do agree with OP that the having to download external software to do something in-game is very lazy on the dev's part and isn't good for the game. No complaints about the scarcity part though, in an exploration oriented game, scarcity is kind of necessary. Busy lad these days aren't you Ant?
FIRST, LAST AND FOREVER
Nope. I'm now last. So I'm last first. I'm a winner in the reverse kind of way.....and now my head hurts.
Once 2.4 arrives, Fdev should think about doing a storyline based ED game. This game now has enough to satisfy the 40 hr game players, taken aside the steep learning curve. Anyone currently at the site in HIP 14909 that can get in? On Xbox btw
Sounds like alien music to me...
To me it looks like they are growing a ship.
please notice me daddy obsidianant
wow this shit is getting cooler every day are we entering thargoid space
Well that seems simple...NOT!
I'm tired of these puzzles that are way beyond 99.9% of players. Fdev are catering to a tiny minority.
leslie white I agree.
GTpcGaming I don't like that they're only designing content for a select few, and that you have to leave the game to find anything out.
Out of the game? I mean all you technically need to solve this puzzle is the game, pen & paper and Elite Dangerous forums. I'm perfectly fine with that.
leslie white I just play the game until something big happens. It's not my place to find these things.
Math not Maths. =P
+Tuttomenui It's Maths in the UK. :)
I know, I'm just messing with you. =)

I can't find this by myself... this have to be possible WITHOUT other things that the game only. This is a crap because without internet and other programs we cannot solve puzzle. I am not agree with that. (sorry about my bad english)
It is possible to solve these by just using the game, pen and paper and Elite Dangerous forums. Which is genius setup by Frontier dev team.
ULTIMBANGA There's literally a game internet.
The internet is supposed to be a part of the game.
All this alien shit is going on and I'm trying to figure out how to leave a station without cunting my ship.
