I think Secret of NIMH was deliberately making the rats mysterious. I believe Don Bluth himself said that there was no explanation for Nicodemus' magic and the origins of the stone. The focus of the story is meant to be Mrs. Brisby and her journey to discover her courage and self-worth. She's overwhelmed by a situation bigger than her, so she's in over her head, but she surprises everyone by being the bravest of all.
There's a subtle implication that Jonathan taught Brisby everything he knew, and not just how to read. You'll notice that the Brisby family and Auntie Shrew are the only animals besides the rats who wear clothes.
I do recommend reading the original book. While I wouldn't say it's better than the movie, it does focus much more on the rats and their story. Brisby (originally Frisby) is only a minor character in the book.

Jerry Goldsmith's music in this movie is incredibly awesome!!
Don Bluth himself with 14 animators left Disney back in 1979 to form his own production company, Don Bluth Productions but in 1979, Banjo the Woodpile Cat debuted as a television special, but back in 1980, The Secret of NIMH started production & took two and a half years to finish the movie, but on July 2, 1982, The Secret of NIMH debuted in movie theaters & it marks Don Bluth's direct to theatre debut

Honestly, there’s some similarities between Happy Feet and Moulin Rouge:
    -Both are jukebox musicals
-Both are co-produced in Australia (and made by talented Australian directors)
    -Both feature Nicole Kidman
-Both we’re initially acclaimed and received a lot of attention at the Oscars only to be looked back upon as overhyped and overrated.
Personally, I love both movies, but I can perfectly understand why one wouldn’t. I sometimes wonder why I love ‘em myself.

I never know what experience I'm going to get with a DreamWorks Animation film, considering how the quality of their stuff is all over the place, but I did enjoy Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, mostly for how absurd in an entertaining way it was. It could have used a sequel honestly, and I'm not counting the series, considering how drastically different it is.

I'm totally with you on these, Brian. With the exception of Secret of Nimh, which I've never watched and therefore don't have any opinion on, I too cannot stand (or simply don't get) any of these movies/show, either. 😬
I was especially mad at Toy Story 4 beause it really did not feel like a satisfying continuation to what 3 did. I was not at all opposed to getting more Toy Story (especially with how fun the shorts that came out after the third one were), and like you said, I too respect the message. But this did not feel like the right story to tell it. Everyone felt so out-of-character. Some of the choices made were straight-up weird. It was overall a huge letdown, and I can't say I'm looking forward to the 5th one, but if they're making it either way, I at least hope they'll fix some of the stuff that went wrong in that 4th.

We'll have to agree to disagree on The Secret of NIMH. 😁 It's not just one of my favorite ANIMATED movies, it's one of my favorite MOVIES of ALL TIME. I was seven years old when I saw it in a theater in 1982. I didn't know who Don Bluth was, nor did I know about the then-recent Disney walkout. I just knew that this film had an edge to it and made me feel wonder, awe and excitement like no other film had done before (and rarely has since). It had me under its spell then, and it still does today. And just like the movie, Jerry Goldsmith's PHENOMENAL music score is one of my all-time favorites.

I completely AGREE with you on Toy Story 4. It really was NOT needed. Also, what was the entire point of Andy giving the toys to Bonnie and having a heartfelt goodbye with them, only to have her turn around and do what she did in 4. Just...BOO. -.- And actually, I agree with you on MOST of your points (I did used to watch Family Guy in its' earlier days but it just got worse as time went on. :/)...hell I even kind of agree on the Secret of Nimh one, but I still love it because of the art. ^^; As far as movies I dislike that Everyone Loves...

I haven't seen Toy Story 4 myself, and don't really plan to either.
I agree with Brian here, that the story should've ended with Toy Story 3.
I mean, the original started with Andy and Toy Story 3 ended with Andy passing his toys to a young child when he left for college.
There, original kid leaves the story, have it end there.
I admit though, that after the 'hand down' I was a little curious as to what would happen with a new owner, but even so, with the original toy owner no longer in the story, just go ahead and 'quit while you're ahead'.

    Here are my thoughts:
    1. Never watched Family Guy, never will.
    2. Toy Story 4 had one good thing - the duck and bunny characters who always fantasized about attacking the antique shop owner. That was pretty much it.
    3. The first Despicable Me was just okay. The girls (particularly Agnes) were cute, and Vector was hilarious. That's about it.
    4. I've never seen Happy Feet, but my parents have. They've told me Cars is a better film. I would likely agree with that, since I consider Cars to be pretty underrated. NOT Cars 2. That film is trash.
    5. I've only seen the secret of NIMH once, and it was over a decade ago. I'm with you when ot comes to the animation. But keep in mind, it's based on a book. I don't know how faithful it was to the source material, as I never read the original book, but I think it's pretty good. This is the only one on your list that I disagree with. I can understand why you don't like it. The story seems to be going several different places at once. But I personally like it.

It feels like more people like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland than the Powerpuff Girls Movie. I'm not saying that I don't like it, but it just feels like a different movie. You can like any movie you like because I wouldn't judge anyone. Here are my thoughts on your picks:
    1. In that case, leave the Family Guy impressions to me, I know a lot about that show and used to love it before it went through seasonal rot.
    2. As much as I liked it, I completely understand every word you said about it. IMHO, they should’ve just stuck with the shorts and specials after Toy Story 3. And what you said about how the messages taught in the fourth installment could also apply to the mere concept of the movie, “Thomas and The Magic Railroad,” the concept of a crossover between “Thomas the Tank Engine” and “Shining Time Station,” the PBS Kids sitcom that introduced American audiences to the little blue puffball, in and of itself, is brilliant, but the overall execution is… a mixed bag of good and bad qualities. But hey, at least they brought Diesel 10 in the continuity of the TV series!
    3. That’s another movie I liked, but I still understand why you don’t, a lot of the humor is hit and miss, but the ending of the first movie was wholesome and entertaining.
    4. I liked Happy Feet a lot, but I respect your opinion on it.
    5. I hadn’t seen it until my twenties, but I still enjoyed it wholeheartedly. Even so, I won’t lie, what you’re saying about how confusing the plot was makes sense.
P.S. What’s your opinion on two the two British hit cartoons, Danger Mouse (classic and modern) and Count Duckula, and the CGI animated series, “Sitting Ducks”?

So I haven't seen Secret of NIMH or read the book it was based on but one of my favorite TH-cam channels, Overly Sarcastic Productions, recently came out with a trope talk video on the "Small mammal on a big adventure/in a big scary world trope" and Red actually talks about how in the book version, the mice and rats that weren't experimented on aren't bipedal and clothes wearing, so the whole "why are the rats special" doesn't really apply there. Nice video Brian! Here’s my personal list
5: spectacular spider man, this is not a movie but this’ll be my pick for a tv show, I hear a lot of people say it’s one of the best animated superhero shows of all time, one of the best characterizations of spider man and one of the best animated shows of all time, I watched it and it’s eh, I enjoyed myself but I feel like it’s far from what it was hyped up to be in my opinion, everything green goblin related was the highlight of the show though but venom’s backstory was definitely the worst part.
4: the how to train your dragon trilogy, I know this is one of your personal favorites Brian but I just can’t get into it like everyone else, I think it’s pretty good, the music is great and the animation is phenomenal but I definitely don’t agree that it’s a perfect animated trilogy, I’ll just talk about number 2 since it’s the one I have the most problems with, I feel like Hiccup tries way too hard to get the villain on their side, like he’s taking over the dragon village, capturing multiple dragons, his alpha is attacking the other alpha while Hiccup’s father, mother, his friends and the dragons are fighting valiantly for their lives and instead of trying to restrain him, Hiccup still tries to talk him down, I also feel like the dragons have a lot of missed potential, with all the interesting designs I feel like there’s so much you could do with each dragon to make them different but they are all just hive minded fish eaters.
3: Encanto, I really liked this film but I definitely don’t see it when a lot of people say that this is in Disney’s top 10 or even top 5 best animated films in their catalogue, it’s really fun and the music is great but it being one of Disney’s best of all time is a bit of a stretch for me.
2: Frozen, I never understood the Frozen craze, me personally I thought it was okay, I’m not a fan of the twist villain trope so I feel like that’s one of my biggest problems with the movie.
1: Lion King 2: Simba’s pride, I like this movie but I don’t think that it’s great, it definitely does not live up to the original in any way except for Timon, Pumbaa and Rafiki being as enjoyable as ever, I personally love the lion king 1 1/2 and I think it’s a better movie than lion king 2 for sure but that’s just my opinion.

    ***SPOILER WARNING***
No. The Secret of NIMH book is pretty much the same story wise, the whole backstory of the rats and what makes them so intelligent is explained. But also, there is no use of magic in the book at all. That was just added in the film for some reason, a plot device or something. I mean the story is perfectly fine without magic, I don't know why they felt the need to include it in the film.
And don't worry, Jeremy's character in the book isn't what you see in the film. He doesn't really do much in the book, but he does help the story progress in terms of helping Mrs Brisby (who is also called Mrs Frisby in the book, no idea why they changed it) and her family; mentioning the Great Owl and taking her there, as well as giving her family a ride to their summer home at the end. But that's just because she helped him; he was caught in wire and she saved him - like we see in the film.
Also a key difference I should mention is that the book doesn't have a villain. Jenner is mentioned in the book, but we're told by Nicodemus that Jenner and a bunch of other rats left those who escaped due to a major disagreement and are later hinted that he and the group of rats died. Whereas the film he is there, and wants to kill Nicodemus... he was clearly only included for an antagonist role because obviously the story needed it. No, no it clearly didn't and the book will prove it.
But yeah. I can understand where your coming from Brian, the animation and score are gorgeous - you can tell why it's considered one of Don Bluth's best films. I've just recently rewatched it due to reading the book beforehand; the film makes the plot quite convoluted especially with the whole magic thing.
I do recommend the book though if you haven't read it, the book is superior to the film. Was this helpful?

To answer your question, Mrs. Frisby was changed to Mrs. Brisby because after the book was published, frisbees became popular again, and the word was copyright claimed.

I agree with not liking Toy Story 4, not only for all the reasons you stated, but because it also felt incredibly disrespectful to the previous movies and Andy.
He trusted Woody to Bonnie because she really seemed to want him and promised to take really good care of Woody... and then not only neglects him, she literally never noticed Woody went missing.
Andy SHOULD have kept Woody, because at least he wouldn't still have had someone who cared about him Asian from the other toys.
And don't get me started on what they did to Buzz and dropped his IQ significantly.
As for the Despicable Me sequels? I'm good with the original and 2. It's 3 and beyond where I lose all interest

    5. Family Guy is one of the few adult cartoons I love, but most people prefer the Simpsons over it.
    4. I personally think all the Toy Story movies are A+ pictures, but I think branding Toy Story 3 as the Citizen Kane of animated films is a bit much.
    3. I personally think all the Illumination movies are underrated...except for the Minions spin-off...and the Dr. Seuss adaptations.
    2. I'm kinda iffy about Happy Feet.
    1. I'm not going to hold anything against you for hating the Secret of NIMH even though I love it and the other Don Bluth films in the 80's.

I honestly think "the Rats of NIMH" is an acquired taste. It was big when I was a kid, I loved it (the sequel was terrible though). I was an 80s baby, so I was deep into that style of storytelling... the adventure style with the creepy undertones . Well, I've been called weird because of it....movies like that and the Black Cauldron were some of my favorites, I loved that horror sneaking in.
But, you might find that the book it was based off could clear up some questions. Look for the book "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH"
The necklace is not in the book, that was only added for the movie... I don't understand it either.
However to answer the question: the animated movies i don't like...(please no hate here) any of the Barbie movies. Maybe it was my age, maybe it was I preferred action figures to Barbies. The stories, the acting, the animation style...just didn't peak my interest.

I remember seeing Toy Story 4 in theaters and feeling very disappointed. While I don't hate the film, I will admit that it should've been something else, like a completely original premise that wasn't Toy Story related. I do respect what the movie was trying to do with its message, and it does have some things that I do like, like Woody's character growth, the return of Bo Peep, the beautiful animation, and the homage to Don Rickles in the credits, but I didn't like what they did to Buzz Lightyear, some of the new characters didn't work for me either, and the fact that it changes so much of what Toy Story 3's ending gave us is also a huge problem for me. With all this, I consider Toy Story 4 non-canon to the rest of the franchise.

I definitely like the first film and even own a Blu-ray copy, but the second film legitimately made me angry, which hardly ever happens with me regarding film. The major event in the middle (avoiding spoilers for any potential non-viewers) ticked me off, mostly for how it was done, and there were other problems I had with it elsewhere. The third film was automatically better than the second for me, but the damage was done. Plus, there were issues I had with the third film as well.

I’m not that big of a movie person myself. But since you did use a TV show as number five, two tv shows (that aren’t animated) that everyone seems to like but I don’t would be…
-Young Sheldon: To be clear it has nothing to do with the original Big Bang Theory show (aside from the fact I never got into it) my main problem with this one is that the characters feel too mean spirited for me with the way they’re written.
And -Walking Dead: I just can’t watch anything with zombies in it period. (Also no idea how it’s getting so many spinoffs).
No offense to anyone who likes these shows, they’re just not for me.

Don't feel bad, man. I get you with Secret of NIMH. You're not alone in feeling the plot is everywhere. Animation is stunning, best hand drawn animation i've seen in sny film, but the story is lacking in consistency. The book is better, snd there's no magic stone or magic really involved. Very scientific, and overall good. Slso, Jenner wasn't meant to be an antagonist, they just needed one snd made him it. Which sucks, because in the book, him and Nicodemus are actually friends and once they have been genetically modified, he just has a different viewpoint and leaves. That's it. Totally recommend the book. It'll help you understand better what's going on. I personally feel the same way, this movie in my humble opinion is overhhyped. Ok, bye. Have a blessed day.

I completely agree with most of your opinions on this list. I haven't seen Toy Story 4 and I like Secret of Nimh, but I can understand why you have issues with it.
There are only 4 other movies that I don't like(although 2 of them I do enjoy a little but don't really get the hype). They are Bambi, The Polar Express, Treasure Planet and Encanto.
I find Bambi visually beautiful but the story is boring. The Polar Express is creepy looking and too long. Treasure Planet and Encanto are the 2 here I don't hate, but don't really like either. Treasure Planet has some nice visuals and a touching dynamic between the hero and villain, but the writing brings it down. Encanto has some great songs and characters, but not enough time to develop everything.
