  • On this day, Aug. 14, in 1925, the City of Dover flipped the switch on its first electric lights. To celebrate, the city held a nighttime Mardi Gras with parades, music, performers and food. More than 20,000 people flocked to the city that night. Foster's Daily Democrat would say the following day, "The impressive spectacle when the current was sent through the new lightning system flooding the business section with brilliant light was one that will not soon be forgotten by even the youngest enthusiast while the older residents who recall the days previous to the installation of electric lights must have felt a keen sense of pride in Dover's latest accomplishment." Mayor John W. Morrison would say later, "In addition to furnishing an evening's pleasure, (the celebration) attracted thousands of strangers to our city, who left substantial evidence of their presence in the various marts of trade." Lighting has changed since then, and will change again. The City Council earlier approved a conversion of Dover' street lights to LED, which will be retrofitted by Affinity LED, a Dover company.
