Wendy really sounds more like a "musician" than a "vocalist", it seems to me she clearly understand her instrument (voice) and how and when to use it. I feel like she has her toolkit of options and almost always knows how to bring the right "tone" to what the music she is interpreting needs. There's a big difference with the way you play certain beats (a jazz to a funk groove, for example) and she seems to approach her musicality in a similar way. It always impresses me how she can navigate through so many kinds of emotions (in this album alone from soothing in Like Water to angst in When the Rain Stops, from melancholy in The Road to playfulness in Why can't You Love Me)and her work in Red Velvet shows brightness (Butterfly) and even some sadness in Last Love. She may always have been talented, but this level is only achieved with pure hard work. It's inspiring.

Wendy has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. It's crisp and pure, yet warm and full. Her control when singing live is utterly astounding. She is just effortlessly talented. 2020 didn't feel right to a lot of people for a lot of reasons, but for me Wendy being hurt and on hiatus was really high on the list. So glad her amazing voice is back making new music.

One of my favorite things about “like water” is that it kind of emulates the element physically. Her voice tone plays a big part of it, but those fluctuations and push and pulls with dynamics make it seems so unpredictable like a river flow, but it’s still so connected and smooth. I love how it connects with the lyrics too. At one part of the song she sings something along the lines of “being the water to fill your sore spots” and her phrasing kind of makes the song emulate a stream or a creek (I don’t know if I’m making sense). But her phrasing and note changes that will go up and down feel like the unevenness of rocks in a riverbed that are being filled with space by water. Like you know when you hear a creek or a stream and it’s not an even sound because there are different depths that the water is flowing through? That’s what I’m kind of getting from it. I might be overanalyzing this tho lol. Her voice just feels so “go with the flow” vibe. Wendy’s really amazing.

Easy is right. I don't know how else to put it, some singers sound like singing is as natural to them as speaking and when singing seems that natural for them, I don't know, it is just so beautiful to me. Whenever I call someone's singing easy, to me that is a great complement to their artistry and a testament of their hardwork.

relaxed. that's the word you're looking for. wendy is the strongest female idol vocalist in the 3rd generation vocal technique-wise and when you have the vocal prowess she has, singing is like speaking to you bc you know how to do it correctly--your larynx must be completely relaxed, not lowered nor raised, among other things, to prevent straining.

I used to think that Wendy wasn't as powerful as the other main vocal in SM girlgroup (Taeyeon and Luna) but then i realized, there's not many girlgroup covering RV's song and if there's one, you can clearly see how it takes so much efforts, some even struggling to sang their song, especially when it reach Wendy's part. And then it hit me, Wendy sang it so easy, like literally so easy, with the whole dancing sequence and the constant smile on her face while singing. She knew her voice, her technic, her range, she master her voice to the point it's as easy as breathing for her.

You can tell how much Wendy loves singing with the way she can naturally carry such difficult song to sing with ease. She’s got her voice mastered to the point where she can play with different techniques and deliveries on different songs and it has been evident with Red Velvet, but she really blew me away with this debut. I already thought she’s an amazing singer but she really surprised me with this album. I have so much respect for Wendy not only as an artist, but as a person as well.
The way she came back better than ever- after all she went through, she decided to improve herself and she focused of the positives even in such a dark time. She even gave us an album to comfort us. We really don’t deserve her.
Great video and I love the editing as always! I love how you referenced the teen vogue article.
I hope they get to hear her pop off in When This Rain Stops too 💙

"Easy, it doesn't even sounds like she's trying," "Her natural voice has such a richness and natural vibrato to it," "Her technique is what makes it really beautiful, because all registers of her voice are well-connected," "It's not artificial and just pure her," "She really treated and mastered her voice like an instrument, because she's sound the same-if it's not better-than the recorded version."
Thank you for this! Where's the lie? Your descriptions of her are all accurate! Thankiesss once again! Hope to see more Wendy's here in the future!

The way I smile from ear to ear watching this whole video. The pride I have for Wendy is spiking up through the roof right now. What really makes her stand out is that she was a musician and a member of a show choir. These experiences that made her one of the best vocalists and artists out there and just years and years of nonstop hardwork and dedication, may it be vocal nodules or a terrible accident. She never stops learning and training. I mean she never let go of the mic even when she being sent to the hospital. She stays true to her words that she will never stop singing until she loses her voice

lol i think they're talking about the fact that she needs a lot of breath control to continuosly sustain all those belts one after another, and that she doesn't sound out of breath even after doing all those dynamics and runs, which is probably more difficult than dancing and singing at just one level at the same time. there's a lot of technicality in this song

@@chrissyalapo-calg9748 oh, yeah i understand! ig what i was saying was all those years of dancing and singing at the same time also made it easier for her to maintain and control her voice since you're breathing hard while dancing and you have to control your breathing before singing again? if that makes sense? btw i didnt mean to sound rude or anything---wendy's my ult bias! i think my comment could be taken in a negative way?? but i promise i didnt mean it that way!

Idk if it is true, but it was said that SM has always been waiting for someone like Wendy so their group can debut. Also, I never heard that kind of voice in the kpop industry (the reason I became a fan of her). I kept on listening to songs or covers, and I can't really point out what's in her voice that make her the stand out. I thought because she kinda have a voice lesson in Canada or something, cuz her voice has a hint of a western vibes. I can't really tell tbh. To add, when she auditioned, SM asked her what songs with "high notes" she can sing. Then straight away sing like 6 to 7 songs of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, etc. Now Rafi comparing her to Whitney Houston became a fact.

"...the fundamentals of making vibrato, the main takeaways is that there's no pressure being put on your larynx. The fact that her natural voice has that, along with this natural richness that just goes w/her voice is so incredible. The fact that she's able to retain that within different levels of her range, including the moment where she shows off her vocal flexibility... it's really stunning and I don't think we've heard a voice that was able to do that yet."
"Her technique-- that's what makes it beautiful. Because all of the difference registers of her voice are connected."

Wendy is my bias from Red Velvet, and without a doubt she's one of the top Kpop vocalists. Many believe she's the best in the 3rd generation. Like Water is a song that not only has heartfelt lyrics but also Wendy's ethereal vocal performance. Recently, Kpop has a string of sensational female solo artists releasing their album, such as IU, Wendy, and Wheein. Our ears are being blessed by these amazing singers and their incredible songs.
Btw, Wendy disclosed that originally Like Water was an English song but changed to Korean lyrically. Hopefully she will sing an English version in the future.

This has been in incredible time. We have had Rose, IU and Wendy releasing new solo work. Each is very different from the others and yet all with points of excellence. I have not heard this often yet, but it struck me that there is something about this particular song that seems more "oriental" than the main songs from the other two. It might be the scale. I'm not sure.
