- In this latest episode of my question to run a Sub 40 10K for the first time since 2017, we headed over to Wilmslow in Cheshire to run the highly-regarded festive 10K race.
Would a taper and some new race day innovations be enough to push me under 40 minutes?
Great result given the conditions and not mentally feeling 100% 👏🏻
Thank you
Great effort John. Wilmslow looks a tougher course than Telford, best of luck for the sub 40 there 👍🏼
The struggle is real...
Superb run, my PB is 41:12 and I know hard you're working there, great effort and oh so close
We'll get there Tom.
Great run both 🥇I think I’ll give the bicarb a go for Park Run on Saturday 💨 if it’s no good I can always use it up whitening my t shirts 😂 Good luck for Telford I got my Park Run PB on there so if the 10k course as fast you’ll smash it 👊🏻👊🏻
Haha expensive whitening. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
Excellent video, both, and good effort in the race. I used to be manager of a tool shop in Wilmslow, near that Sainsbury's. Was good to see the area again after 25 years 😅
Sounds like a Smiths son `I Managed a Tool Shop in Wilmslow' 🙂
Good effort from both of you. Winter races are definitely tougher imho.
There is a sweet spot between winter and summer. Autumn and spring:)
@@tworunningbrooms I’ve yet to find that 😀
Great video again. Nice to see you using and hear you thoughts on the bicarb. Well done on the race. Keep knockin' on that door. 👊
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door.
@tworunningbrooms should I sing that in a Bob Dylan voice or an Axl Rose voice? Although I love Dylan, on this occasion I'm hoping it's GNR!
@RunSensible Dylan always. No one else comes close 😀
@@tworunningbrooms even All Along The Watch Tower?
Well done and good luck at Telford
Thank you
Well done - good to be going right way even if not feeling totally A1 and the weather can't have been ideal.
It also extends the series which has been successful so far 🙂
@@tworunningbrooms yeah don't want to make it appear that these things are "easy" as they aren't ! I think though on a better/faster day/course you have every chance now. That bicarb stuff is interesting although hope running does not start to get cycling time trials I used to dabble in when you seem to need to spend longer "tricking" yourself and your bike up than actually training! Certainly in that world conditions and how "aero" you are is vital although of course a big "engine" still matters.
I'm always blown-away by the fact your 10K times are circa the time it takes me to do park run
It's all relative. 🙂 We look at other folk and think faster than us and think similar at times. 🙂
Actually envy you a bit. Yesterday I ran in 26⁰C with a UV index of 8.0
Much prefer to run when its cool & the Sun isnt trying to nuke me!
Greetings from Downunder
I actually like those conditions. Not for racing though. It's rare up here.
Humans.. the grass is always greener I guess. Love an overcast day with low humidity for racing.
Well done great run. Glad you had a good day, i had a tough race, felt tough from 3km. Unfortunately the conditions weren’t particularly great with the headwind, they are normally brilliant at Wilmslow. I know most people were around 1minute down on the normal performance (i was 34secs down on last year despite being in better shape), typically find Wilmslow to be quicker than Knutsford as without the headwind you can normally come through halfway having worked so much less than normal. I am also doing Telford so hopefully will bump into there. Great video.
That's very interesting to know. I have a feeling that this will come out as my 'best' performance on Run Britain for several years. Yes come and say hello at Telford.
So many factors at play on race day, you never quite know what you're going to get! Great effort though, sounds like things are trending in the right direction!
Clocked a comfortable PB at Donny 10k, have Bolsover in a couple of weeks then I'll be ignoring road racing until spring!
Well done at Donny. Windy I heard. Yes we love taking part and when the great days come that's a bonus.
It wasn't too bad for most of the route, unfortunately the finishing 400m into the stadium area was an absolute wind tunnel though 🤣
Great running! The last climb really saps the legs and spikes the HR but the final km is really quite a good one!
I had a pretty rough race including a 30 second "pity walk" at 6.5km - HR was through the roof from the start and it felt tougher than recent XC races! Finished with a 44:30 having gone out to try 42:30... recent training had been going so well too! Still, there's always the next one!
Oh dear sorry it wasn't your day. I can see how it's a great course if you're feeling A1
Well done , we are willing you onwards . It’s definitely there for the taking . Best wishes Helen and Martin (Dereham Runners from Penistone)
Thank you very much. Hope to see you at next year's 5K.
I think you did an amazing job. Great time. You will get sub 40 soon, I'm sure 💪💪
Thank you
Well done both of you. Great to meet you both. Interesting that alot of people myself included weren't able to get the time they wanted yesterday
You too. Maybe the warm weather followed by the rain made if very humid?
Well done, some great running there. I'm sure a sub 40 is just around the corner John.
Thank you
Great work, both! I’ve grabbed the Sen 10s to finally see what all the hype is about 😅
Let the world know how you get on with them :)😀
Great to hear about your different training additions. I really rate the plyometrics ✊. I’m trying the Sen 8 and struggling to get on with them. They just feel a bit flat and no pop for me
I wouldn't bother with the 9s or 10s then as they're not that different. Yes now up to 15 x 24 inches jumped. 30 will be the gold standard.
Really great effort. To push even when mentally not 💯 in it is huge as a runner 👍
Thanks Matt
Good job
Thank you
Well run John great time on the day 👍
Thank you
Got to be happy with a come back pb. The course may have been worth 30 secs, but the weather conditions weren’t brilliant either. If the weather is kinder at Telford then a sub 40 will be very likely.
Thank you Joseph. Fingers crossed.
Well done 👍🏽 good positive effort
Thank you
Maybe the mental 'not there' feeling you refer to is just end of the year tiredness and lack of sunshine. The weather definitely affects my mental race altitude......just a thought. Great time though, well done.
That could be true. We had been cooped up the day before due to weather when normally we're out and about. There is an interesting study to be had on how many pbs are set in fine weather?
Well done both of you, another good video and good runs too.
What kills me with Wilmslow is that walk back from the finish into town. Always cold and wet, seems to take ages. 🤨
Interesting views on comparing with Knutsford, I would say Knutsford is quicker.
However…. 🤦🏻♂️
2021. = 43:20, at Knutsford, Wilmslow AND Telford.
2022 = 42:01 at Wilmslow and Telford.
What’s the chances of that?
We didn’t run this weekend, or last as we have the flu still. Telford is home 10k (least favourite course though, traipsing up and down the Silkin Way 😂) so was going to be attempting sub 41. But now I’ll just be happy to get a few runs in beforehand and get round under 42 I think. 🤞🤞
Well done again you two. Great stuff. 😀
Great job, Brooms. Sub-40 is coming.
The bicarbonate is just mopping up the acid part (H+) of the blood lactic acid (leaving the rest, the lactate, which is a useful fuel). That's why it's most effective at race distances where the higher pace generates high blood concentrations of lactic acid (e.g. 1 mile).
BTW, you can buy a big pot in the bakery isle of your supermarket for vastly less cash than "sports" brands.... try it on session days to make sure if agrees with you.
But no way it was doing anything useful early on in a 10K when your lactic acid levels were low... placebo at best.
Might it have been more effective in the second half as lactic acid levels build?
@tworunningbrooms yes, that would be more likely where it would be effective.
I doubt the bicarbonate could be anything more than placebo. Surely stomach acid neutralises the bicarbonate rendering it impossible for it to get into the blood stream?
Brilliant John 👏 I did check the results on Sunday to see how you got on! Glad all 3 new things worked out well on the day! Onto Telford 🫡
@TheFODRunner thanks Andy. The results also had Dawn down as 3rd F60 but now she's first after a couple of dodgy results were removed (after much detective work from us).
Good run how did you take the bicarb I’m intrigued how it might work cheers joe
Hello Joe. We took it 2 hours before the race started. You mix two packets, one of the bicarrb and the other a gel mix. You then neck it down. It has a slightly fishy flavour.
@ cheers love the content
Nice one, mate. I got 44:11 at Doncaster Racecourse 10K. I don't take any supplements though, so would you recommend that one you trialled in this race?
Yes it's good although expensive at £6 per throw.
Well done both! Why try bicarb for first time before a race? See you in Telford!
Because we race that often that we can afford to experiment in a race. See you there.
What wave at Telford John? Good luck.
Wave 2 again hoping to avoid last place.
I’ll give you some competition. Currently 41 mins but 2 weeks crash training and will go for sub 40 wave 2. Best regards.
I would have thought the hydrogencarbonate ions ingested in these products are simply neutralised by stomach acid. If that's the case, I'm not sure how that could then have a knock on effect on lactic acid/lactate ion concentration in muscles. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who knows.
Good question and one far beyond me. You could ask bicarrb direct as they are on Instagram?
It was a really tough race on Sunday. A lot of people I went with found they struggled. Not sure if it was the conditions (There was definitely a head wind for about the first 5 or 6k.) or just one of those things but it felt hard from 2k and I personally blew up at 5k and it was a death march to the finish.
Oh dear but that's good to know in a way as I can put my performance in context.
