  • Some divers don't know there is a dump valve at the top of the Power Inflate Valve (PIV) hose. Alec shows how simple it can be to service the PIV dump valve.

Alec, I don't know if you will see this message or not, but a family friend just recently got her OW certification. She called me today to ask me about something that happened on her first dive that scared her. Turns out that her Diving instructor had never gone over the fact that she could neutralize herself at depth using her bcd, nor expained the process. She thought her bcd inflator wouldn't work below 15 ft. I'm sure she learned how neutralizarion with a bcd works during the online course, but it was apparently not covered during the actual face-to-face instruction. So, this family friend was in 60 feet of water trying to overcome her negative bouncy and becoming exhausted. Thankfully her dive buddy helped her but did not explain what was happening. Once I explained how a BCD works, I sent her to your scuba tech tips videos as auxiliary instruction to make her more comfortable with this new sport. I'm just sharing this anecdote with you to demonstrate what an invaluable resource your videos are because they share so much important information and wisdom in a very straightforward, easily comprehensible manner. You are a credit to the sport. Thanks!

First off, I'm very happy your friend did not have a serious end to the dive. Good for the buddy to help her inflate. Second is this is why i do these videos, to educate, and entertain. Other scuba channels review gear, podcasts or give news but I focus on diving gear, skills and history. If you want to make her laugh (she may need it), have her watch my Vintage Scuba S07E10 Buoyancy Control In the Stone Age. Don't tell her but we used rocks to descend!! Tell her I hope this does not stop her diving, there is so much to learn and enjoy in the water.

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter thank you, Alec. I will send that video to her. I've already told her I would be her dive buddy when she is ready to go again. I've also recommended she go ahead and get her nitrox certification. I hope, when she has some dives under her belt and is more comfortable, she will consider getting her advanced open water cert. You really need that advanced cert. to get the most out of North Carolina ocean diving, IMHO.

    excellent teacher as usual
an interesting point is that these parrts are usually easily available but if treated with a minimum of respect, they will last the life of the BCD and they can be conserved to repair another similar BCD.
The worst case is when the nipple bonded to the BCD decides to give up but happily there is solutions that can be installed but requires a higher level of skill.
    very good topic
    excellent video.

I think if divers took care of gear as they should, the industry would crash as no one would buy anything new!

That was the inflator hose, which is great! 'Don't think you've done a video where you disassemble a standard K-inflator, yet...

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter I don't know if the owner of my shop knows about this. He told me to twist side to side to release the air from the BCD. Wouldn't surprise me. he didn't know the Aqua Lung Omni didn't come with Trim Pockets.

two cable binders on the hose? Thats good. But it would be better if they were not aligned in order to make sure its air tight.

That's the way it came from the maker. It's Kevin's BC and he brought it along to get it services after the shoot. It's over 12 years old and he takes it everywhere.
