John only came back to the table because he was playing Jimmy. He knew Jimmy could be a bit careless in these sort of situations. John probably wouldn't of bothered if he was playing Steve Davis.

Unfortunately no, played with Ali Carter and Stuart Bingham for Essex, won a southern counties title beating I think Devon in the final along with Dave Belcher and Brian Salmon, many years ago. Grew up in Farnworth moved south aged 10 in 1976

my dad (Jack Gregson, not famous,) had many games against John,
at "Spencers" snooker hall, and once asked him, why he played with
so much side on the q-ball, he replied, "because I can't see the middle"
sadly, this came to be true, as he had very real problems with his vision
towards the end of his career...TRULY A GREAT GENT THOUGH....
I remember watching this live and I am still as blown away now as I was then. John Spencer gave a masterclass in the name of the game Snooker!

Wonderful, from down the road from me, Radcliffe, Manchester way, met him when I was a kid, lovely chap an nicely spoken of by all who knew him, his eyes went in the later stages of his career and became a very knowledgeable and respected commentator, never give up! Cheers

This is the game I've watched most often. Makes me happy every time.
Carelessness was always Jimmy's weakness
And drugs.
Jimmy always went for one shot too many - it cost him
at least two world titles.
I suppose he always thought he had another game /chance tomorrow. The tomorrows caught up with him.
John Spencer was a nice guy, I always enjoy listening to his commentating on the classic videos.

Jimmy's tries to escape from the snookers were really careless, well deserverd from John.

Brilliant video as usual! Love the scoreboard! Perhaps Elliot was watching John when he decided to continue? Haha. I don’t know about you Cesar, but I’d much rather watch these longer frames with safety and trying to get snookers than century breaks any day.
Before the days of "miss" shots being called after a foul which made Spencer's task more difficult. Spencer was 3 times World Champion for a good reason and we saw why in this video.
The miss rule doesn't apply when your opponent needs snookers so it would not have changed the outcome here. That said, i dislike the miss rule a lot, its killing the game
@RonnyDonny13 If a player misses, then award the opponent a free ball, that's one of the possibilities. Replacing the shot and replaying it over and over is so dull and boring

Difficult to judge the side when playing from under the cushion like that. But yeah, he should've known that.

Very Careless from White. This frame goes a long way to explain why he has never won a World title I think.

John Spencer & Alex Higgins 2 great players of the 70's era, Only the great Ray Reardon was better though out the 70's ! But this was a fabulous effort by John Spencer !😊

This was back in the first so-called golden era of snooker in the mid-late 80s. I remember as a school boy watching ITV's coverage. I remember ITV used to have the International in September, the old Hoffmeister world doubles in December, the Lada/Mercantile Credit Classic in January and this the British Open in March.
loved playing at Spencers in the 80s and got to see and talk with John every night. What a true gent he was along with his manager of the club Dave . John at that time would look after a you lad called Brendan but i cant remember his last name and hope he went on to make a life for himself who was a very good young player at the time. If anyone would know if Dave and Brendan are ok please post.

Ted Lowe, Dan Maskell, Henry Longhurst...Spot the similarities. Another thing. A seemingly harmless frame but it speaks volumes about the brilliant Whirlwind's lapses of focus and killer finishing of his opponent. Don't tell me what he exhibited here didn't lose him one or two World's.

Mmh, are you sure? Maybe people generally use it that way, but I think it doesn't imply failure. Its formal definition does not mention the result. For example: His historic effort to beat Jimmy was successful/a failure.

@@CesarMuroya You are correct Cesar, the definition of effort suggests that it would apply to either a success or failure. However (certainly from my own experience in England) when someone says something like _...it was admiral/great effort..._ when referring to an endeavour, it is like a turn of phrase to mean essentially good try, but not quite good enough.
It's not so much that you used the word incorrectly, but you used it in a peculiar way to me. As I always say to my Nigerian friend when pointing this kind of thing out...it marks you out as a non English speaker! Keep up the great content though buddy!

All credit to Spencer, a prime example of the downside of flair players perhaps? Once patience is stretched the wheels tend to come off, Ronnie's done well to temper that side of his game, shame Steve Peters wasn't around in Alex's days

All while watching Jimmy miss all those snookers, commentator-Stephen Hendry just kept popping up in my mind saying "That was CARELESS!"

Probably what most people were thinking to be honest.
Pretty effective psychological warfare even if Spencer ultimately won the battle (frame) but lost the war (match).
Jimmy's carelessness made this frame interesting.
I love Jimmy but his carelessness in general is what cost him world titles, as well as this frame.

I doubt he is, White won the match and later the tournament, but extremely careless from Jimmy, made it 'easy' for John, some clearance under pressure

But who would've known that History would've repeated itself in Jimmy Whites carelessness in his World Championship encounters with Stephen Hendry years later, like for example when he was 14-8 in front of Hendry at the Crucible in Sheffield? Only way I can describe Jimmy White is exciting and frustrating to watch at the same time.

Very careless on the first one, but you can't blame him. Players showboat with that kind of lead all the time. And he was very unlucky to go round the back of the black on one of the other attempts.

Jimmy was a player who potted so many balls in a single hand whenever he was given chance but he was not paying good time in breaking snookers because he had no time all the day long for practicing snookers because he just play and pot balls after balls in a single hand all time😊

SavageArfad I agree. But still, all top players of today are pretty good at escaping snookers. Jimmy was a top player back then and still got away with it. It wouldn’t have been possible nowadays.

Under the "free ball" rule he could choose to play any ball as a red.
I suppose the 'miss' rule would stop some of this play happening again.
Don't forget that when someone needs snookers, a Miss can't be called.

Who knows. Perhaps a bit of extra caution might have brought him the world title his talent deserved.
Hats off to Spencer too. He made White play a style he didn't want to and reaped the benefit.

Those attempts to escape the snookers by White were truly abysmal. Like he didn't care. I know he did, but still very poor. Spencer must have known this, that's why he played on.

Was Jimmy White outwardly critical of John Spencer doing this? Were their critics of John Spencer's gamesmanship given the number of snookers required?
I don't know if Jimmy White just said "the heck with it after the seven-point foul, I just want to get on with it," but it sure as hell looked that way.
Yes it was disrespectful but Jimmy stupidly responded in kind by being so careless. If White had played properly, Spencer would've given up after a few minutes.

Go green and then black? can that? I didn't understand the rules changed right? White killed two reds in one shot and couldn't and Spencer went green without killing a red one first
If your opponent commits a foul and leaves you snookered, you are awarded a Free Ball: you can nominate any colour as a red (green in this case) and then pot any colour as usual (he chose the black).
Potting two reds in a single shot has never been a foul.
