I love the fantasy cinderellas printed by the Ankh-Morpork post office. Terry Pratchett was hugely into philately, and Going Postal is one of my favourite books of all time. And I love how when they decided to print the stamps they paid so much attention to detail when it came to gum, paper, emissions, “flaws”…
You really should have your own show on the History Channel or something like that. I was actually wondering when you were going to do a show on revenue stamps. Your production is very good... run with it, man... you could be the Mike Rowe of stamp collecting!

After slogging through dozens of videos with people showing supposedly "valuable" stamps that are pretty much worthless and narrations by people who are utterly clueless about stamps, finally a worthwhile video, and, ironically it's about stamps that aren't really stamps. I started a topical collection a couple of years ago on the theme of Art Deco, an artistic style I've long been interested in. Starting in the mid-1920's, and mostly in response to the famous 1925 Paris Expo on the decorative arts, several governments issued stamps with Art Deco inspired designs. This flourished into the mid 1930's then fizzled out, but was reborn again in the 1990's when nostalgia inspired a comeback. Ultimately there were really only a couple of hundred true Art Deco stamps, including airmails, postage dues, semi-postals and other "back of the book" stamps. But then I discovered Cinderellas, and there are many times as many Art Deco Cinderellas as conventional stamps, and I'm having loads of fun finding new ones all the time on line and at stamp shows. As the creator of this video shows, many were made for products and services as well as for trade fairs (the most popular), air shows and car shows.

Thank you for making a video about Cinderellas! I am a Christmas stamp collector and I have several Christmas Cinderellas in my collection. I think they fit perfectly, I am glad they got recognized as collectable.
I never really appreciated Cinderellas until I began researching them for this video, and they really are a special collectable to have. I think Christmas seals are excellent, the fact that they were issued in so many countries for the same cause is fascinating, each with a different flavor of perspective. Thanks for watching!

Ah, a 3 year old video...never mind. Anyway, I collect Esperanto stamps and Cinderellas. I have a dozen or so exhibition pages of mixed stamps. There are also covers, genuine postally used with official Esperanto stamps with a Cinderella label also on the cover. There are literally thousands of Esperanto Cinderellas from most countries usually celebrating Esperanto Congresses. I haven't found any from USA even though they hosted a Congress in 1910, 1915 and 1972.

I am pleased to know I CAN start saving some of the pretty charity labels that come to me on my correspondence and add them to my collection after all. I had been discarding them thinking they weren't "allowed" as collectibles. (In the United States where I live qr have very pretty charity stamps called Easter Seals that are extremely popular additions to people's envelopes as decoration. I'm not sure if its still this way but the charity used to send free packets to just about everyone in the hopes people would send a little money in for them or purchase more. But it was not a scam deal, it was very legitimate, I myself was helped by one of this health charities programs.
India has been issuing "My Stamps". You can go with your photo or photos of things you want to see on the stamp to a post office to print. The printed stamp is commercially meant for postal use but at the same time gives an opportunity to see yourself on the stamp for a moderate fee. I can send pictures.
I just looked up “My Stamps”. Very interesting. I think the US does something similar but you can only order them online and not in a post office... at least that’s how I think it works. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
So a show about the album weeds promoted by Scott's catalog would be good. If you explore the Scott catalog you see lots of stamps issued by say Equatorial Guinea. They are usually sold by a large stamp company, often in New York City. You cannot buy them from the issuing country either. I seriously doubt anyone in that country has ever seen them. I think they go directly from the printer to the stamp dealer. I try only to collect stamps that I find used on envelopes, of course that has gotten hard even for some U.S. stamps!
I love Christmas seals, but I like them even more when they are on cover, or on a postcard next a stamp. I also love anything in what they call "back of book". I think this is the first stamp collecting video I've ever seen.

I don't think back of book refers to Cinderellas. The term is used for postage stamps that have slightly different purposes than pre-paying for letter mail. They are normally listed after a country's main listing in a catalogue (thus, back of book) and include postage dues, official stamps, parcel and newspaper stamps, and so on.
I collect several countries in albums and there is always a section at the BACK OF THE BOOK (called BOB in "the philatelic world") for things like semi-postals, air mails, revenue stamps of many types, special deliveries, etc. I don't consider these to be cinderellas since they have a postal or monetary use. I consider things like labels, Christmas seals and other "stamps" without a monetary value on the stamp to be cinderellas. But, I guess, according to your definition all of this BOB stuff falls under the category of cinderella stamps. No problem, we all collect what we wish to collect and what we call it really doesn't matter. Love your series!

I have a topical collection of stamps and postal history pertaining to Esperanto and other artificial international languages, and Cinderellas promoting these languages and events related to them are an important part of my collection. In fact, the most expensive stamp I've ever bought is actually a Cinderella: a perforated, postage stamp-sized piece of paper, crudely printed in Amoy (Xiamen), China, in 1895 to serve as a form of international money, and bearing an inscription in the international language Volapük.
Now that is interesting! I just learned something new by looking up Esperanto (and then went down an internet rabbit hole and read a lot about other artificial languages)... so thank you! :D... You must have a very unique and fascinating collection!! Interesting how Cinderellas can be the most valuable stamp in someone's collection, thank you so much for sharing this!!!
I've got a fishing license stamp from Missouri and a couple of Cinderellas from some boxes of playing cards.
In México We have special tuberculosis charity stamps and they are SPECTACULAR, sometimes even more beautiful than the real ones!
Oh absolutely! 1944 dark red st. Lorraine cross over Mexico with the sun to the west.... Spectacular no doubt!!

Once again, an interesting video. Thank you. One line of cinderella stamps that I find interesting is the Swiss WWII era military propaganda stamps. I'm not sure why Switzerland would have these stamps considering that they were neutral during WWII.

You have put me in a deep dive of trying to figure out this Swiss puzzle, after I read your comment I found a number of google images of the stamps, and they are even available on ebay... The images I found only show scenes of the Swiss military in action or uniform... but not who they are fighting or why, as if they are just reminding people that they can fight if needed? Ill keep looking, but I cant find any good literature on it. If someone else knows and reads this, please reply and let us know. Fascinating!

I was just rewatching a few of your videos - this is one of the best, in my humble opinion. Without rereading (Note: my version of Word underlines "rewatching" but not "rereading", seems a bit odd! ) all the comments to see if this is mentioned but how about stamps to special places? I have a comment below somewhere that mentions the "Port Hood Provisionals". They are considered to be actual postage stamps since they are dissected versions of actual postage stamps. But there were stamps issued by islands (for example) that pay the extra surface (usually ferry) cost of mail delivery - for example the "stamps" for Kaulback Islands, also in Nova Scotia. I assume Scott's considers these to be Cinderellas since they were not postally issued product. The use is identical, the only thing different is the source of the stamp! I haven't checked other catalogs to see how they treat these stamps, maybe it's only Scott's. The whole situation seems a bit odd to me!

I have a series of Spanish Charity stamps issued in 1945. They are called "Zaragoza Stamps" and are still being sold on the net. They were to help finance a Seminary in Zaragoza Spain. I have about 6 of the stamps in my collection. Have you heard of them?
Thank you for your very informative video about cinderella issues. I have saved a number of them and find them quite interesting. Of special interest are exhibition and convention labels I have from the 1920’s and 1930’s. Some are for philatelic events, others represent such industries as chemical, marine, textile and surgical. Also of interest are several World War II ration books which I have. Finally, some bogus 1972-1982 souvenir sheets which I have are quite interesting and amusing as they poke fun at then current stamp issues.
I seem to run across many of the "Eaton's Fine Papers" sets of Cinderellas in boxes of stamps I buy. They have very nice quality printing on them. I also collect Christmas Seals and other charity stamps. My favorite Cinderella is the EKKO Radio Reception Verification stamps.

Surprised you didn't mention Staffa or Republic Maluku Selatan. Cinderellas seem a grey area since some catalogues do include revenue and telegraph stamps.

I have a copy of The Casque's Stamp Collection of Motor Racing Drivers from 1929, I think it qualifies as a sheet of Cinderellas as non of the stamps have a denomination value. I think it's pretty cool.

what about an episode of franking(?) before the advent of stamps
The label on the bottom left at 5:29 is from Turkey. It is issued by Turkish National Association for Battle against Tuberculosis, which was founded in 1948 under the title National Association for battle against Tuberculosis. Later in 1987 it was converted to a federation.
As the Turkish humanitarian organisation is called Kizilay (Red Crescent), the logo for the battle against tuberculosis is a double red crescent facing left rather than the double-barred cross. This is due to the majority of the population is assumed to be muslims.
The label contains the name of the association (Turkiye Ulusal Verem Savasi Dernegi), and the following informative text:
> In 16 years,
> 56 million tests (Turkish word for "test" in parantheses)
> 25 million BCG (TB vaccine) has been delivered
> Vaccinate the newborn.

A question. I have been a stamp collector for many years ( since 1972 ) and sometimes find it confusing why some stamps are Cinderellas and some are not. I have a large collection of Canadian stamps and two I will never be able to afford are the "Port Hood Provisionals" . They are basically two earlier Canadian Postage stamps that have been bisected and one part overprinted with a denomination to pay postage to an island by ferry. These are considered to be postage stamps ( Scott #'s 88b and 88c ). Usually stamps used for this purpose are considered to be cinderellas. Is the reason the Port Hood Provisionals are not is because they were created from regular postage stamps and ones specifically printed ones ( cinderellas ) are not? I also am a bit confused about war tax stamps and stamps issued by provisional governments which are considered regular postage stamps and not cinderellas. Explanation please!!!
Now that is an interesting story that I just looked up, I would love to do a video on those Port Hood Provisionals at some point, thank you for bringing those to my attention. Great question! I think you might be right... since the post office was responsible for the issuing of the stamps and they were just modified but still used for regular mail, then they are variations of the stamp I guess. Which would explain the war tax and provisional stamps since its usually an overprint... So maybe in contrast we can think about Local Post stamps that were not made up from regular stamps and are considered Cinderellas... That might be it Joseph!... you came up with a rule that so far works.
Don't forget that it is up to the catalogue printer as to what is considered a stamp and what is cinderella. A stamp in Scott may be a cinderella to Gibbons.

Not all Belgian railroad stamps are cinderellas! Some could be used in the regular postal system too. And as a belgian stamp collector, they are one of my favorite things to collect.

Does anyone else feel like me to want to give a shout when you see that the Cinderella postage stamp is pasted slanted on the cover of the album at the end?
An alternative postal company to NZ Post in NZ called DX Mail create custom stamps for tourist attractions and businesses, that have the value to send a postcard internationally (great for tourists who want a stamp to match the theme of the postcard image). I guess these are Cinderellas as they are not issued by NZ Post, but there are some great designs of landmarks, attractions and even a NZ currency sheet!
I just looked them up, they have very attractive imagery... and yes those would be Cinderellas. Something new for me to a keep a look out for, thanks for sharing!

I recently found out I was tricked by some fish stamps from Maluku, whereas the island exists with a postal system apparently the Seletan ones are all cinderellas and served no purpose other than to appeal to stamp collectors, guess it worked

Thats a really good question. I would say that they are Cinderellas, self declared entities not recognized by the world would issue stamps to try and further their claim... take a look at the video I did about Bangladesh, those were considered Cinderellas until the country became independent. That's my thought.

I am a fan of Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. After the publication of Going Postal, Discworld Emporium, started making stamps from his world. They have been doing this for a decade or so. I would love tosee a video on stamps (so called) with country names that don't exist or not recognized by Scott. Such as South Kasai or South Malaccas.
I started collecting these a couple of years ago and have almost a complete collection including souvenier sheets of South Kasai, Biafra and Katanga
That topic keeps coming up by other viewers and I should do a video on it soon. It is so interesting!
Biafra and Katanga existed, if only briefly. They were break away provinces from Nigeria and Congo, respectively, and declared their independence and so issued postage stamps. I am not sure if they were ever actually used to carry mail, mostly they were sold to collectors to help raise money to fund the revolution. I had some of those stamps as well.
It seems the more exotic the place or circuimstance the more Iike it. I have a Minkus book and it has spaces for Biafra but I had to make pages for Katanga. I have recently started to collect South Kasai.

How to identify a cinderella from a postal stamp??
Firstly, keep an eye out for any of the types that I show in this video. Otherwise it comes down to researching and looking for information on a stamp... But of course you may come across items that could be very difficult to tell, especially those in other languages... use the internet and any other tools available to find more information :D
A cinderella is probably the only thing in existence that is defined by what it is not. It is anything that LOOKS like a postage stamp, but is NOT. Remember that postage stamps can be imperforate or rouletted, so don't necessarily have teeth around the edge.
There's the "Zippy" cinderella. For many years, Zippy - a character created by the USPS to encourage people to use zip codes - appeared in the selvage of sheets of stamps. Zippy ended up on a lot of envelopes and was summarily canceled. Similarly, parts of sheets that aren't stamps have ended up on envelopes - "Stamposaurus" comes to mind from the 25c dinosaur sheet. I have an example of a cover from a self-adhesive booklets affixed to an envelope. In some cases, these objects are the only "stamp" on an envelope and make it through the postal system despite having no monetary value.

Hi Chase, glad you liked the video and thanks again for watching. This isn't a new season yet, just various videos about different stamp topics to help the novice stamp collector (and me) to learn about the hobby. I am currently filming season 2 and hope to have them uploaded beginning mid December, another fun 20 episodes that will be better than the first season. I did not think about these custom stamps which is a relatively new aspect to stamps, they could be considered Cinderellas because they are not listed in stamp catalogs, however they are actually used in the postal system to deliver stamps which is not a cinderella... I guess its a whole new category of custom stamps... you could argue that they are non-bogus 'artistamps'. Artistamps are self made stamps like fantasies or phantoms, except these ones are legit... so maybe that is the category?
