      The cpu performance gains in Firestrike was about 3 times that of the i5. Just went with an Asus Tuf micro 450 board. Overall I was a little surprised at how much of an improvement it was going to the 3600, I expect gains but more like like 30% give or take. Still running a rx580 for a few more months yet. I am extremely happy with this upgrade, the value is fantastic!

    I'm one of those suckers who bought a Core i5-7600K three years ago. Part of the reason was the lack of an upgrade path beyond the 7-series for my Z170 motherboard, and the i7-7700K was a step too far in price for me at the time. It's probably the biggest case of buyer's remorse for me, but recently I made it into a couch gaming PC and it's quite alright for running casual games at 4K 60 fps with my "old" GTX 1080 graphics card.

Given the GPU is the easiest component to upgrade in the whole system I say put your money towards quality base components (MB, CPU, RAM, SSD, and even a decent case) and you'll have a system that could last for 2-3 GPUs.

And by a large margin. Also let's not forget how rushed the Ryzen launch was. Memory problems, bios problems, voltage problems... So yea, for a simple gamer, 7600k was a better choice. Me personally, i waited with my PC build because of that shitty minning craze and insane GPU prices. I bought 2700x when it came out. Glad i waited. Ryzen + was sooo much better than original and it worked from a day one. First ryzen lineup had a lot of problems. Something people seem to forget all the time.

      "No offense, but why would he listen to you when literally every benchmark at the time showed that those 4 cores smoke out 6 core 12 thread"
      Maybe because his friend doesn't have a high end graphics card (which is what buying a mid range CPU would suggest) and thus wouldn't see a majority of that benefit to begin with. Or he plays at 1440p and above or he doesn't have a high refresh rate monitor.
      It doesn't take a genius to see that the 7600K was running at full load and thus would loose performance over time as games demand more resources. If you aren't in a position to benefit from the increased gaming performance now, it makes a ton of sense to get the 1600 for better performance in the future.
      Not to mention, if you account for motherboard and CPU cooler cost, the 7600K is quite a bit more expensive. The Ryzen platform was and is still far more upgradable.
      People who bought the 7600K are short-sighted, plain and simple.

    Other things of note:
    Original Price for i5 7600K - 242 USD as per Intel ARK
    No cooler
    Does have IGPU.
    Original Price for Ryzen 5 1600 - 219 USD
    Has a Wtaith Spire, a decent enough to OC lightly on it cooler
    Does not have an iGPU.
    Obviously, the 1600 was the superior overall long-term choice. It is also price-matched with the i5 7600 NON K. It also has an upgrade path, unlike Intel Z270 platform.

    • @joeyvdm1
      @joeyvdm1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are right bud, the HT enabled 7700k really makes a huge difference nowadays. You really do need at least an 4c/8t CPU minimum these days for gaming with new and demanding games.
      But Zen3 is not far, and good things come to those who wait. So your patience will be well rewarded. I did the same thing, I waited patiently many many years to upgrade my 2600k. And I continued waiting till Ryzen 3rd gen, and finally grabbed an 3700X last year.
      And I couldn't be happier. But that was a massive upgrade from 2nd gen Core (Sandybridge) to an 3rd gen Ryzen (Zen2). But for you, I think waiting for Zen3 is the correct choice, it will be a larger upgrade, considering 7th gen Core (Kabylake) does have very decent IPC, you would feel an bigger improvement going to Zen3 instead of Zen2.
      And Zen3 has an reported 10%-20% IPC improvement and an 8 core CCX, among other improvements. So it is worth the wait in your case. I will be upgrading my 3700X to an 4950X as well, but that is for work, and I wouldn't be upgrading if not for that sole reason.

    It's amazing that Today we can buy a cheap cpu which is solid for gaming for many years .
    I'm wondering what is the next thing that makes games more cpu heavy . One thing could be next gen ssd (like in ps5's or faster) cause very fast SSDs can use lot of cpu power to operate

    • @joeyvdm1
      @joeyvdm1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, and PS5 and Series X actually have specific decompression engine blocks built into them, to handle and accelerate all texture and SSD data coming in.
      th-cam.com/video/nUQsTFbXnnk/w-d-xo.html
      Sony estimates their decompression hardware is equal to 9 Zen2 CPU cores, and Microsoft estimates that theirs is equal to 3-5 Zen2 CPU cores. On PC Microsoft is giving us the new DirectX Storage API to help us, but we still don't have the decompression hardware to help us.
      The next gen consoles can use all their CPU cycles just for the game and GPU, where our PCs have to use the CPU for all of it. I am quite interested to see how this affects us going into next gen myself.

    You can see these older ryzen starting to mean more in games lately. There are many games now pulling 6 cores 12 threads . cod warzone, apex legends I think even pulls more threads. It is making these 1st gen ryzen more meaningful than they where on release. If I had the choice of a 7600k or a 1600.... With the battle royal style games I play id take the 1600 now. Probably on release it would have been the 7600k. My self I moved away from intel cause I do not like what they are doing lately. I decided to switch to a x570 board with a 3600 and wait on ryzen 4000. Will move up to at least an 8 core at that point and be ready for the new wave of games. 6 cores for now is more than enough for gaming. Cod warzone uses all my cores and 10 threads stressed with 2 that looks like they are set aside for my other functions. My friend actually run a 1700 ryzen and Im shocked at his fps in apex legends it really does smash it now in 2020. Those extra cores give him results not far away from my 3600 its very very close. It would make more sense for you guys benching these older CPUs to actually bench a newer game that actually uses more than single thread. Otherwise all your benching is driver updates. The new consoles have 8 cores for a reason. Expect games to be running those 8 cores and probably 16 threads in games for 2021. For now mainstream gaming goes up to 6 core 12 threads. The reason you saw tomb raiders huge jump in performance is due to exactly what I just said btw. Should select your games by engine not game. A lot of these games are using game engines at least 5-7 years old even if the game is "newer"

I mainly have played a few perennial titles for the last several years: World of Warcraft, Civ 5 and 6, CK 2, HoI4, SWTOR, a little bit of EVE Online. Most recent game I probably played was Shadows of Mordor, and I had no graphical issues at all, though I didn't bother with the graphics settings. I would say my goal is 1080p with 60 fps on incoming titles and a thought of pushing 1440 on older titles.
    I am considering going up to a new GPU, probably a 1660S or 2060S. In my research, I stumbled upon several websites that argued that my CPU and motherboard (MSI z270) were very limiting and and would not even support the 1660S, much less the 2060S. I was looking at 15-25% bottlenecking.
    But, one of my good friends said that the websites were a load of bull, that bottlenecking is not a serious concern, and that even if it did bottleneck, it would be barely noticable, like 84 frames instead of 120 frames or something.
    I admit I'm very green on this topic, but is there merit to either argument?

      More and more new games are having problems with 4 thread CPUs, if it had 4 cores and 8 threads it would have been a beast still.

    Something that AMD has made possible is gaming at much lower entry prices.
    In 2017, I built a system using an i3 6100 and a H110 board.
    Now, just recently, I got a 1600AF and a B450 board for only 40€ more, and that's not only triple the cores, but also a much better set of VRMs and connectivity.
    It's only been 2 years and a 6core is cheaper than a dual core from back then.

    Thnks steve, quality content as usual, though i would suggest (if u re gonna do these old cpu comparaisons) to add ubisoft games to the games tested, anything from watch dogs 2 to recent assassin's cree titles have mind boggling cpu usage and quad cores aint gonna cut it for them anymore.

    Intel could have provided much higher core counts and across-the-range SMT on 14nm chips years ago. Not doing so could be seen as a smart business decision, but many enthusiasts are looking back and thinking, "Why should I reward a company that purposely held back performance for so long?" Thank you, AMD, for forcing Intel to get with the program.

    I just built a AMD system 2600 to replace my 6800k@4.6 both have 5700 gpu but I have not moved over all my files and am using both same time. I can't tell a difference in games like 3-4 fps difference and everyday stuff is just about the same. I guessing the only time I'll ever note the improved performance is if I get a bigger GPU or render videos and I only do that like 5 times a year.

      Why? That was a clear downgrade. 6800K at stock wipes the floor with Ryzen 2600.

    • @miniweeddeerz1820
      @miniweeddeerz1820 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why? A 6800k with 6 cores 12 threads has a higher clock speed when it's at 4.6ghz, and although it's a little worse than a 2600 when it comes to IPC(I think) it's barely an upgrade. Should've gone for a 8 core Ryzen zen2.

    I was gifted a 7600k in 2018 but I didnt have a budget to upgrade my dual core 4th gen build to a Z series 7th gen board and ram. I sold the chip and bought a used Xeon, added some cash and upgraded from a 750ti to an RX 570. Still going strong til now and my productivity isnt that far from 7600k performance

    Let’s be completely honest, my home network runs at 10gigabit, my internet connection is 2Gbps unlimited bandwidth. I am still using the I5 7600k.
    I use handbrake to encode very often and I have 2 x Synology ds1019 with 60terabytes of space per server.
    Even I don’t require the spanking new processor. Consumer hardware is pretty cheap my next build in 2-3 months when new processors drop is gonna be a ryzen 4series it’s good to have beefy hardware but seriously most often none of you use it heavier than me.

    I still have R5 1600X with a decent cooler so it clocks itself at 3.7GHz all core, two cores boost at 4.1GHz + GTX1070. All games I play run smooth 1080p (At least @60fps). Still do not see the reason to upgrade. Maybe one day when i switch to 1440p or 4k...
