Also gonna say this. Good LUCK actually getting to Iron Angel. Thats one of those AWESOME OMG SO COOL!!!!!111111one spells that takes far too long to get to.
Yeah yeah Ulm is ‘forgiving’ for starters etc etc. But I don’t know anyone who got into Dominions by min maxxing their first game. Just pick whatever is most flavourful and then later find out your first nation was EA pangea like literally everyone else.
Thanks for the vid! I agree with your faction take. While MA Ulm is easier to grasp the basics of, scipting/squad size and composition/province resource management all have so many nuances that have a hard to spot but potent impact on the game even from right at the start of expansion. Watching the dom 5 championship tournament was deeply enlightening as we got to see an expertly piloted MA Ulm. As an example, bringing a sub commander with your second expansion army, you can pop any infantry that take bad afflictions right at the front in a baby squad to catch lances without spreading morale issues to the vanguard, the prot is so high you can let timmy jump on that grenade and keep your troop losses giga low.
ALSO ALSO. You could do the Matron of the Healing Spring for the site if you want. Take her Dormant and get the N gem income. She wakes up and forges W/N/G for you.
I think having a healer pretender like that makes sense on nations that have more quality than quantity troops. That are based on a few High power thugs or super combatants. But Ulm is more quantity based.
One of my first nations. It's a good starting nation, for sure. Then later, after playing other nations for a while, you return to Ulm and realize all of the cool tools it really has. I love the war dogs, by the way. Not too expensive, good prot, and 5 attacks out of a square? They're surprisingly great during expansion. Also I tend to grab a few spies early on, not just to scout, but also once I decide it's time to go on the attack I will park them in someone's capital and cause unrest. Cool thing is this doesn't generate an event - so if they're not watching they will hit 100+ unrest and be out of recruitment (and money) for a turn or two. NOT a fun surprise.
I tried this after a boring start and was praying for magic diversity/research to add to my dormant dwarf rainbow (like yours with a bit of air/precision/self def) and opponents reliant on their sacreds. Then successive turns sage, lore master (throne), then Machaka declaring war. Interesting to tank magic scales in a build. Also considered with dormant keeper of Bridge with A4/E3/S4/N3 or Taiwat of war with astral as both safer in battle than dwarf.
Flambeau is prononced Flame-bo (French) Ulm is considered a good starter faction for new player. When I started Dom, I disagre. The faction look to Human for my fantasy game so I want with MA Ermor (past me: cool, undead faction). I remember taken Growth scale to counter the death penalty of the dominion and probably order and prod scale for bonus money. I did not win that game. All my pop still died :( My second faction was EA Mictland (past me: nice, aztec faction, that rare). What a bless? Some what less miserable than ME Ermor but still not a win. 3e faction was MA Ctis. Finally win by spawning the big lizard army, winning the same way one win with Ulm. oh well.
Perhaps you could sacrifice one of your luck scales for glamour 2 and water 1 so that you could use some glamour gems you either search yourself to get access to water Kobolds and gnomes Water kobolds give you luck true sight (for elves and ubar) for your army thugs and pretty late game they can use frozen heart if you ever need to Gnomes give you nature and glamour as army support. Enlarge, rings of regeneration and you can forge the boosters for higher grasps in the other paths Addendum 1:Also quick tip a spy can find out what throne is in a provinces and find certain magic sites Addendum 2: the water and glamour on the god allow you to take winter move resist which can make your cap mages with a boot of the messenger quite mobile. And also glamour allows us to take heroism which can allow the mages to get more Xp while sitting in the capital researching before a war which could allow them to have better precision in the war Both are things I would sacrifice at least one reinvigoration for
You should %100 have army thugs in every single army, you only need a weapon and maybe misc items for resistance. Swords of sharpness will deal with prot tanking thugs, Fire brand will kill chaff, holy scourge vs demons, staffs that cast fireballs, incinerate, burn are also available for your commanders. Flaming arrows for your crossbows will hurt your own people but once massed they will kill almost everything until arrow fend comes out. Meme bless: You can take a dormant/imprisoned weapon bless, forge bows of war, make your H1 priests on mass, give them the bow, bless them in combat and rain death behind your Ulmish infantry.
I like wardogs as chaff. Great for soaking lances as well as arrows, they can also beat bottom tier indies by themselves (looking at you Jaguar tribe and Woodsmen), though Ulmish regulars do it more cheaply. In re:flails If I remember correctly, both attacks from each 2 hand flail have the same target and so are somewhat less useful than if they chose a separate target for each. I think highly of the shielded variety- only one attack, but it has the same +2 modifier and the shield can stand up against pretty much anything up to crossbow fire. I'd call the guardian a kind of anti-sacred troop. Not really worth the price unless you're facing heavily blessed sacred or a god. The heroine also needs a hat. This is the chance to see how a lead crown performs vs. a blacksteel helm for (almost) no opportunity cost. The smiths don't care. The Smith does not benefit from enemy scales in enemy dominion. Nothing you do can benefit from enemy scales in enemy dominion. However, if you can get beneficial scales in neutral dominion you can take advantage as long as it lasts. So if you can get positive magic scales in neutral dominion over a lab you control, your smiths there would have a positive research modifier. Maybe a reason for going low dominion, particularly considering you have no sacred troops per se, but given the tendency for low dominion to spread wide since it can't spread high, I wouldn't. The Black Priest is not a mundane researcher. That means that if you're taking -3 magic scales (my personal recommendation if you're going negative at all), his research is actually going to be 4. This would not meet your criteria for an efficient researcher. Which is okay because you want your smiths to research, forge and summon in most cases. You need a battle mage and this guy is okay for the role. Priest/Smith is better, but he comes out old. Use your astral random smiths to master matrices for your Priest/Smiths and Black Priests that random fire and a few slave matrices to get them boosted at least one level in combat. Astral, Fire and Earth gems are your keys to victory IMO. Along with forging, particularly boosters. Getting nature mages is also a good thing. WTH, making the device that allows you to instantly claim every throne is the optimal strat! There are a number of approaches. That's what makes this game interesting to me. I'm interested to see what *you* do.
The titans aren’t expanders they are Defence tools For example your three way war in the test game. The fire earth and air guy can give you your mage bless and if dormant pretty okay scales. High fire and air spells like the flame lock down spell can counter Defence sacreds Or the keeper of the bridge can give you the same with different paths Though you give up astral with them
A build for the tiwaz of war would be 5f for possibly fire globals like the flame pillar and flame pillars Air 4 to have cloud trapeze for killing armies and perhaps globals like gale gate (arguably then you should take air 5) And earth 5 for later earth blood deep well and riches from beneath Your scales would be 6 dom 2order 3production 1 heat/cold 2 growth 0luck and drain 3 It also gives you the rare feeling of using all of your design points
There is also a pretty weird option a dormant master alchemist with basically every path to sight search your every province to get you all the diversity you want F3 a3 w1 e4 s3 d2 n2 g2 b1 You can go full scales as well 5 dom, 2order 3 prot 2temp 2 growth 2 luck 3 drain You can do flame spirits and climb most other paths with an elemental staff or a ring by empowering into them
@BabelBuilder That tree? Blacksteel plate. Your house? Blacksteel plate. Your crops? Blacksteel plate. (Gotta keep them crops protected afterall.) Your sword? Blacksteel plate. Your Blacksteel plate. MOAR BLACKSTEEL PLATE!
Maybe a weird bit of feedback and its maybe personal opinion, but dont read your chapter titles. Either just say you are moving on, or show the heading and start on the new topic. Your delivery is super conversational, it feels super weird to interrupt yourself to announce the focus of the next topic. Imagine: "Hey babs, how was your day at work?" "It was good. Kids and School. How did the kids do in class and do they have homework?"
Wait you don't talk like that?! ;) I'll have to think on this. I know a lot of people simply listen to the pre-games, so this helps keep things organized for them. It also helps during editting. I will put some thought into it either way. Thanks for the feedback!
Also gonna say this. Good LUCK actually getting to Iron Angel. Thats one of those AWESOME OMG SO COOL!!!!!111111one spells that takes far too long to get to.
Also they kinda suck lol, theyre just a decent chassis with no magic, not worth the 25 gems
At least it is something that can be natively cast!
Ulm is my favorite nation through the ages. LA Ulm is a gothic powerhouse. My favorite blood nation.
LA Ulm is a nation I am looking forward to a lot!
Yeah yeah Ulm is ‘forgiving’ for starters etc etc. But I don’t know anyone who got into Dominions by min maxxing their first game. Just pick whatever is most flavourful and then later find out your first nation was EA pangea like literally everyone else.
I agree, but I think people are afraid that new players will just bounce off if they pick something hard.

Timmy nooooo!
I love that there is just so much nuance to Dominions.
ALSO ALSO. You could do the Matron of the Healing Spring for the site if you want. Take her Dormant and get the N gem income. She wakes up and forges W/N/G for you.
I don't think I will here, but I really want to find a good nation for her to test it out.
I think having a healer pretender like that makes sense on nations that have more quality than quantity troops. That are based on a few High power thugs or super combatants. But Ulm is more quantity based.
I wish healing was a little more accessible, or at least more accessible for pretenders.

Sneaky unrest is totally a thing in multiplayer for sure!
This looks pretty fun.
It looks pretty METAL!

I always find nations that can take "weird" scales interesting.

As painful as it can be, I do think picking nations you find cool is probably the top tier play.
Perhaps you could sacrifice one of your luck scales for glamour 2 and water 1 so that you could use some glamour gems you either search yourself to get access to water Kobolds and gnomes
Water kobolds give you luck true sight (for elves and ubar) for your army thugs and pretty late game they can use frozen heart if you ever need to

Glamour is definingly a strong choice.

Items that give a bit of hp also have great synergy with the natural high prot.
I like wardogs as chaff. Great for soaking lances as well as arrows, they can also beat bottom tier indies by themselves (looking at you Jaguar tribe and Woodsmen), though Ulmish regulars do it more cheaply.

To my knowledge you are always limited to 1 target per attack round. Overkill is a thing, but I don't think flails suffer too bad from it.
U could get an inspiring researcher pretender to go for that angel u know...
Totally. One of the limitations of the Dominions stream format I use atm is game length tends to not go past 3.5 years or so.

Flame spirits are really great on nations that have solid range options.
Ulm also has the advantage of being able to gear out a titan cheaply.
Tempering the will is easy MR negates antimagic, it works exactly the same way, and additionally does not stack with antimagic
Oh, thanks for the not stacking tip.
MA Ulm! Lets go! Wonder what bless to go for....
Just kidding, no bless needed
Eh piking reinviguration for mages is nice
I find it refreshing when you have these odd ball nations that want something outside the norm.
Research pretender and rush iron angel thug squad ftw
Do we have access to the trinity chassi? Ponder
I've only ever attempted the trinity chassis once, and it was on Formoria. Any hot crone tips?
We have a DAWG
Ulm is so epic as a concept
They are literally so metal! :P
Not much to say about this one. Walk forward and hit things.
And plate armor everything.
Dog? Blacksteel Plate.
Town drunk? Blacksteel Plate.
Your grandma? Blacksteel Plate.
@BabelBuilder
That tree? Blacksteel plate.
Your house? Blacksteel plate.
Your crops? Blacksteel plate. (Gotta keep them crops protected afterall.)

Your Blacksteel plate. MOAR BLACKSTEEL PLATE!
again my comment is poofing :(
Yea it happens to me too, its rlly weird.
Man, that is super annoying. I can promise that nothing is showing up in my 'held for review' tab. :(
@BabelBuilder mine turned up again, it happened on the MA Abysia vid too iirc. I think it's a youtube comments display/syncing issue.
