i would suggest replacing the knock sensors , knock sensor harness , and oil pressure sending unit on the back of the block while the intake is off. if you are that far tore down you might as well change out the 40$ worth of parts that are going to fail anyway. the sending unit can be done with the intake on but its a pain, the knock sensors will require removing the intake so kill two birds with one stone while you can. don't forget to replace the short knock sensor harness they are prone to failure.

      A couple things that weren’t covered here….
THE UPGRADED GASKETS UTILIZE 2 FORMED METAL LOCATING HOOPS THAT ALLOW THE GASKET TO HANG ON THE CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS.
THE CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS ARE NOT REMOVED TO INSTALL THESE GASKETS. THE HOOPS DO NOT GO UNDER THE HEAD OF THE BOLT; THEY GO OVER IT.
THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SIDE OF THE GASKET HAS PILOTS STICKING UP THAT ALIGN THE MANIFOLD TO THE GASKET.
Always replace the knock sensors and harnesses while you have it apart
      .
EXAMINE COOLANT PORT AREA OF MANIFOLD AND HEADS FOR PITTING. If pitting is excessive, resurface or replace castings.
Although some people fill in the pits with epoxy, it’s recommended to refinish or replace castings.
Do not use RTV silicone to fill in the pits!
INSTALL RAIL GASKETS DRY WITHOUT SEALERS.
Clean the threads of old bolts. (Used or new) Apply a light coat/drop of oil to the threads & bolt head flange washer

@@jamesavery6671 And? Do you think that is going to somehow improve the driveability?
Or give you some noticeable horsepower/torque increase?
Reminds me of back in the day when everyone had a SBC 350 and the first thing everyone did was to put on an aluminum Edelbrock/Holley Intake with a 750 cfm “double pumper”
Then spend weeks trying to figure out why the car couldn’t be tuned to run for s***, constantly fouled out plugs, and was always stalling, popping, etc.
Bigger isn’t always better!!! A stock 350 (or even 400) with just a mild cam, zero to very little head work, and an anemic compression ratio is NOT going to need or even run right with a carburetor that big.
And while an LS intake on a fuel injected engine isn’t the same thing….in a way it’s exactly the same thing!!! That SS intake is designed for optimal performance with the SS heads, the SS fuel system, and most importantly the SS tune that is flashed into the ECM, sure you could “get an SS intake for that price, but you would see zero return on your purchase 🤷🏻‍♂️

Those style fuel line disconnects on many vehicles stick and resist removal. Drench the inside with WD-40 or PB Blaster etc and they'll move easier. Good video, especially as these engines are infamous for intake leaks. If you live in the Rust Belt or just want to avoid doing this job twice you may want to replace crank and cam position sensors while you are there and seal them thoroughly. Look up the relevant TSBs etc on any Chevy forum.

I has a misfire on #4, replaced plugs, wires, and even #4 coil, no luck. Removed the injectors to replace them and realized I might as well check the intake manifold gaskets... glad I did!
The gasket around number 4 was broken up and parts of it were missing, I'm waiting on new knock sensors and then I'll put it back together. Mine is different than this though, it's in a '99 Sierra 2500 and the throttle plate has coolant flowing through it. The intake manifold is also pretty dirty, I wish I had my dad's old solvent tank from back in the 60s and 70s, that crap cleaned anything... but may cause all sorts of health issues for me someday.
Any good ideas on a great degreaser? I used carb cleaner ZEP degreaser, lots of crud still there though.

From the sounds of it, it's your fuel pump. Easy way to tell pull off your breather to your throttle body. Get you a syringe squirt, little gas down in there. Go inside, turn it over. She fires up. You've got a bad field pump. Another way is to jump your fuel pump. Pull your fuse box cover off. Go to fuel pump. I believe It's 87 and 30 jump those two Look here, real quick help. Cross 87 and 30 jump it straight across right there, 87 and 30. And if it doesn't fire up, then you have a bad fuel. Pump, you're bypassing your fuel pump relay . , so if your relays bad that will let you know. If you're relays, bad to your fuel pump power 87 30 direct. If your fuel pump is bad, you can cut a hole in the top of the bed on a pick up on a suburban. I don't know, but that's what I did. I got the measurements and cut a hole in the top of my there. Access right to my fuel pump without dropping the gas tank and disconnection. Everything takes about 3 minutes to change a fuel. Pump out that way. Check my word. It's the way to go if you need measurements, my email isrussoto57@gmail.com

the new dorman intake is actually an upgrade , the dorman company bought tooling from the FAST company so these intakes are loosely based on performance upgraded intakes , they take all the factory attachments although maybe in different locations , but they bolt right on , and won't require a tune. although a tune will further increase the power after you use this intake but again isn't required. i would 100% recommend this intake. I watched this video myself to further confirm what i was reading on LS forums that these intakes are in fact better than stock and bolt directly onto the truck motors without having to convert to LS2 throttle body and injectors. pretty impressive for a stock replacement to actually be an upgrade that even the drag racing community acknowledges. doesn't happen very often. take advantage.

What would be the symptoms of a bad intake manifold?

    • @tjonesauto
      @tjonesauto 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

random misfiring, excessive hiss as idle control tries to compensate, exhaust odor, hard start/ no start in humid or rainy conditions. Hope this helped.

Banks 1&2 running lean and maybe a slight rough idle, a whistling sound at 1000-2400 rpm.

Apparently these manifolds are prone to cracking (the stock ones) as they get old. Why plastic in the first place???? So what that they are lighter. This is such a pain in the ass. My Silverado is throwing lean codes and im almost certain this is my issue

Hi there I watched someone use oil on there intake gasket. They put a small amount around the gasket before installing and said its good. Is it or is it better to use some type of gasket sealer because I noticed you didn't put anything on the gaskets.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

+NationalGuard69 You do not need to add anything to them. If you are trying to make them stay in position you could add a thin layer of RTV so that they stick to the surface and do not move while trying to place the intake back into position. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com

1A Auto Parts but wait for my buddy who did add oil to his gasket. Is that bad.

Depends on how much oil be added. If he added just enough to make the gasket surface slick then it's more than likely fine. You might get a little smoke at first where the intake is pulling oil into the combustion chamber but it should stop soon. Too much oil though could be a bad thing, it could foul out some plugs or it could allow the gasket to move during the intall.

That's not exactly like the old one. That looks like a dorman 615-183. Some folks say they are better than factory some say they are not. What do you all think?
Why not just upgrade the gaskets on the old intake. They're around $40 for the upgraded set.
I need to replace mine but haven't decided which way to go. I don't care to give a little extra for the factory if it's better. But if just upgrading the gaskets will fix the problem I'd rather go that route. No use buying something I don't really need.

1A Auto Parts why wouldn't you just change the gaskets though Instead of buying a whole new intake?

+Josh's Dad The factory intakes seem to crack and fail as they age.

1A Auto Parts. Oh I see. I'm having trouble with my truck. It only has 75,000. I did change the gaskets and didn't see any cracks when examined the intake. But I keep getting a random cylinder misfire but only if I reach speeds of 75 mph or higher. The truck runs perfect though. It starts good, idles good. You would never know there's a problem if it wasn't for that pesky light. Its always cylinders 1,5,6,8 that show up. I've tried almost everything and just when I think it's fixed it comes back on.

Josh's Dad from what I have seen on here a low engine speed lean miss fire is most likely a vacuum leak.high engine speed lean miss fire is fuel preasure. ..
