How come the oama lure changed color.now its green back yellow sides used to be green back with that faded tan color on the sides....need some all yellow with red eyes....thanks...
I'm not Mark, but 6000 should be good. It also depends on what strength braid you're using. If you like to let the fish run and tire itself out, then you could put lighter line, but if you like to boost the fish in, then something heavier would be better for you. My setup is a Penn Conflict 5000 with 240 yards of 40# braid.
Antboi how long of a leader would u recommend using the 1.5oz lure? And if my main line is 30lb power pro, what lb or how many lb on the leader would you recommend?
He hit that lure like a madman, nothing else quite like those awesome good size papios. Sweet. Even better knowing you crimped the barbs on the lure, forces you to improve your technique, I would think, in order to land them.
@worreo 10' Hawaiian Gold and a Shimano Stellafb 2500 loaded it with 30lb PowerPro or 30# Cortland and about 3-4'of 30# Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader tied Uni-Uni. Double the braid side. Then use a Macmahon snapswivel from Cabelas for good action and easy changing of lures. My all day whipping rig.
Hi Mark, I read some reviews on your gear picks and was wondering if this is the hawaiian hcs custom from okuma? Also are your lures available at the new Maui fishing supply? Lmk Thank you
This rod has the name Hawaiian Gold on it. I can't make out the small lettering on the insignia but it was sold in a lot of tackle stores here in Hawaii. Yes, my lures are at New Maui Fishing Supply.
@att800 mahalo for the ?'s. Answers; 1, I fish whenever it is convenient. I also like to break commonly practiced methods for when action might occur. But new moon is much better for me than full moon 2, I work all surface conditions. Flat water being the best for video work. 3, shallow next to deep is hot in my opinion. The Big Island has so much territory and consequently way more fish. Go get'm! m
I’ve used the oama, white with red eyes and jumping jack and from sandy shore and haven’t caught anything. Any advice on setups and retrieving is greatly appreciated.
Mahalos for using our lures. Regarding terrain, sandy areas are usually pretty dead regarding Papio etc. Rocky areas with shallow or deep channels and lotsa whitewater are where the action will be. Set ups, I use an extra long leader/rub line to a severed connection 16-20'. Retrieving speed is key, fast and faster is best. Hope this info helps.
Mark White Nice. Will get one asap. I'll let you know how it does. Any suggestions on color? What knot did you use for the lure? Sorry for the questions man, I have trevally fever haha!
No problem on questions. I like the white/blk eyes best of all. I always use the Palomar knot to tie small lures, 1/4- 1/8 oz direct to lure and to a Macmahon snap swivel for larger plugs.
Hey Mark. I know this is a 7 year old video post but I have a question about the 10ft Hawaiian Gold Whipping Pole. I've been trying to find the specs of the pole on the internet but I can't find any information about it. Is it a medium power with moderate fast action? What is the max oz. and line rating on the rod? Been trying to find this information for months! If you can get back to me on this information, I would deeply appreciate it!
I gave it away, it was kind of soft and could only cast about 1/2 oz. I really like the Island Rod Wraps G-Spin 10'6" if you can find one. Cast 1/2 - 2 oz with good backbone
Thanks for the reply! I currently have the Tica HLHB Salmon Steelhead Spinning Fishing Rod 10'6 but the rod can only cast out 3/4 oz max. Do you have any good recommendation for a 10'6 rod that can cast out 1oz lure far? Thanks.
If you can find the Island Rod Wraps G-Spin blank it will make you very happy. I love mine as it is what I use the most. Try Charley's Fishing Supply on Oahu
Whoever answered the comments.there no yellow or pink at new maui....ill just buy oven bake clay and make dumbbell poppers works the same and i can make my own colors.also cheaper.
Yes, we've been running out of colors because demand is exceeding our production capabilities. Good for you to make your own. That's how I got started in the lure bizz. Nothing like catching a fish on a home made lure.
Cheehee pan fry size! Those are the best tasting size papios
Where can I get this lure
go to the web site and order white/red eyes. Thanks for your interest!!

You got lucky buddy 🤙🏼

cyrus671 guam 4-6 feet. Depends on pole size. I’ll use fluorocarbon. #25-#30
How do you crimp down the barbs?
+Mr. Kayak Fisherman Murray I use small needle nose Visegrips. They also work as a hook extractor.
+whiteykauai Cool. Thanks.
