    Great video! I would have never thought to open up the underarm seam. You're so smart. :) But girl, you need to adhere those patches before stitching! I sewed all of my military uniform patches after either Stitch Witchery or now Steam-a-Seam. That way you know they are on perfectly straight and they don't wiggle while you wrestle. LOL

      Power Tools with Thread I never thought of that... I just don't pin because it's a blood fest when wrestling with the jacket!😂

    Sooo glad I found your video! I secretly hate when I get letterman jackets to see because I always stab myself or break needles, but I hadn’t had to do sleeves until today and was dreading trying to get these on here. I didn’t even think to open the sleeves!

    Awesome video. I just finished doing 6 letterman. I sew for a store near us but I do the stitching at home I have a Singer 20U and it works perfect for sewing on patches. I do use a double sticky tape from Sail Rite to run a couple strips to help hold the year number or patch in place on the leather sleeve, but I use pins for the jacket body to hold them in place.
    One thing I have learned when opening the leather sleeve is to stay stitch an inch or so on the leather just below the under arm and just above the cuff it will keep the stitches from coming loose when you are stitching on the sleeve. It is very hard to get the seams lined up if you take out too much under the arm where it meets the jacket. I use clips to hold the sleeve seam together when I am done stitching on the patch It helps with keeping the leather from stretching I also use a walking foot for sewing the sleeve back it also keeps the leather from stretching and then not lining up at the bottom. And I also use a heavier thread for the sleeve I find just plain machine thread don't hold leather as well as a heavier thread.
    Sewing letterman jackets are my favorite thing to do or even leather motorcycle jackets I love stitching them too :)

  • @bigman7856
    @bigman7856 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will usually go at it with a sewing needle because I don’t own a sewing machine. It also allows me to not take apart sleeves. A machine will obviously give a much stronger hold with a cleaner look but I feel like the time needed evens out and the skill level required for thread and needle is a bit less complicated. If it’s a piece of clothing you want to permanently patch you can also use adhesive or get patches with heat activated adhesive if you use a piece of cloth and an iron.

    How many times can you open and resew the sleeve of a leather jacket?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      michiganderintexas you can for sure do it twice even push it three but on the third sew put a stabilizer where the sew line is to stabilize where you have been sewing! Make sure each time you open sleeves that you are careful doing it . Leather is so stiff you can tear it! And it will split open on you!

    I have a ton of patches for band (he he) to also sew on a vintage letterman jacket that we bought cheap on Ebay rather than buy a new one. I have removed the old stitching and old patches from the previous kid. All good. Now I need to cover over and replace the graduation year numerals on the white leather sleeve (no removable lining, this was a jacket from the 90's).
    I'm wondering what needle type and setting you used on your machine to sew on the leather and also on the thick wool back of the jacket?
    BTW: THANKS! This is a video that I did not expect to find on TH-cam at all!!! At least there is a method to this madness now. It's worth the time since the jacket was only $25 plus S&H.
    Anyway, if you mention the needle sizes that would be awesome!

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Herodotus3 I used the needle that came with my juki 2010. I would use a need to do blue jeans .. it’s a thick stronger need to handle the weight of the leather. My machine works great for multi layers so I didn’t use a specific needle ..

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Each machine has different needles.. look up what needle will work on your sewing machine and try to find either stronger needle like for blue jeans or if your machine had for leather!

  • @Pambulmann
    @Pambulmann 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Lorena, I was just wondering, if you could not zip out the lining, would you still do the patch (I think I'd want to charge considerably more??)? Would you be able to open up the lining enough and get it resewn without having to completely did and re-construct it?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pam Bulmann I would open the lining and re sew it, the client would have to understand that the jacket will not be the same! Usually if it didn't he the zipper I would sew patches on the back and which would show on the lining! I charge based on time and how easy and hard it is! The patches don't take more than 10 minutes to put on.. to be honest my clients pay me more, but I'm happy personally with what I charge.... it just depends on how difficulty the job is...other people do charge more... and that's okay too...I feel in 20 minutes making $12 is not a bad .. but my sweet client paid me $20.😂

    Would it be possible to sew on a patch on the sleeve without taking out the seam? I'm just a teen and I sorta know how to sew but I don't have a sewing machine. I see that the seam needs to be taken out for the machine however. My grandma has one but she's threatened me with death if I bring her more black things to sew since it's hard for her to see (though I'm sure I could get her to with a little begging). Is it very hard to do it by hand on the leather if you're inexperienced, or is it cheaper to just pay someone like you or maybe get my grandma to do it? Thanks!

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alyssa Fisher I would pay someone to do it.. once you puncture wholes on a leather material it damages it.. you don’t want to ruin something you earned by working so hard for it! ..

    • @Herodotus3
      @Herodotus3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A whip stitch by hand may be best for somebody who can't open up the sleeve. Search for "Whip Stitch" on youtube. That will at least give you the ideas and you don't have to go through the sleeve at all or at least to start and end the patch. You may need a thimble or two to protect yourself and will want to experiment with a sturdy but thinner needle due to the patch being hard to pierce, but a cheap leather sewing needle might be easier. You need flat needle-nose pliers if you're stuck. Poke the needle through the leather and then gently grab the middle of the needle with the pliers to finish pulling the needle through. I'm sure this sounds harder than it is.
      If you're really really desperate, a lot of dry cleaners have a seamstress who might have all of the knowledge and experience (and better machine and tools) to do this for not much money. I used to work at a dry cleaners (2 branches) and they both had excellent seamstresses.

      Ohh ... you can heat the inside of the sleeve and maybe the glue will soften and be pulled out.. but it may leave a gummy imprint and leather reacts different than fabric in removing glue.. so I don’t know... sorry I can’t help more!

      Your high school should have a vendor they prefer and are working with (like Jostens) who makes these jackets. They cost a mint though! I looked everywhere on Ebay and found one from the 90's still in excellent condition and the correct size (they will provide measurements for you). Removed the patches and the name stitched on and now am putting on newly purchased patches to cover up (including one with a name on a heart patch). I lucked out and the jacket I bought wasn't just the same school colors, it was stitched with a gorgeous bulldog on the back. Same mascot but all the way across the USA from us. Best wishes.

    Where are how do you make the patches?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      these patches the bigger ones are chenel patches it a special machine that makes the patches. The smaller ones you would use an embroidery machine. Usually the letterman patches are won at different school events. Also some are earned for working at the school or playing or participating at school events. Like band, sports, and dance..

      Marching Band counts as a PE credit and a lot of the visuals that they use can give you a workout. My very athletic son came home from his first band practice with achy shoulder muscles from holding his Mellophone at a 90 degree angle. You should be more open-minded and less judgmental.

    • @donutsforlife8798
      @donutsforlife8798 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sky Guy The ignorance in this comment is upsetting. Band is a sport, we’re out on the field or hours on end in the hot summer heat and you don’t get breaks where you can sit. There’s also marching and having to look good with everyone else and it’s tiring, more tiring than football imo.
