- Material alchemist Lauren Bowker believes in Magick and applies this to her work every day. In this talk, Lauren discusses the career she’s built on this premise and explores the uses of her Magick in everyday life.
Lauren graduated from the Manchester School of Art with the award winning pollution-sensing compound PdCl2, Lauren went on to study printed textiles at the Royal College of Art London, her graduate collection was shot by Tim Walker and modeled by Kate Moss. Over ten years Lauren created several additional colour-change compounds responsive to various invisible elements while consulting in material innovation and user experience for automotive, aeronautics, technology, healthcare, retail, textiles and couture.
Lauren is a material alchemist and founder of T H E U N S E E N, an innovation, product development and technology licensing company comprised of talent across design, science and technology.

I came for magick, but was pleased to learn about eco-fashion. Your creations are stunning. You’re right, ‘Magick is science we don’t yet understand.’ What fascinating work.
People also seemed to forget the Shamrock she kept all those years.
@@katiearbuckle9017 great call! Impressive that one was found and even more so that it was kept. I imagine Lauren would've been a gift of a daughter.
These all have scientific explanations. They just take cool phenomena in science and creatively use it to sell a cool product. She ended it on a sweet note but the statement is ridiculous considering what she was presenting

The actual science behind magic is quantum theory and thats something Einstein wanted to disprove - relativity and quantum mechanics dont mesh well when it comes to rules. well quantum entanglement has since been proven. The witches and the shamans know about this stuff but not in the scientific way western ideas are understood. It is very interesting research (and practice) if you have the dedication for it.
@@cxaxukluth5407 lmao you’re talking nonsense none of this is true. Not to mention what she is talking about isn’t magic. The title is misleading. It’s just science. No magic. It’s like saying a mood ring actually detects your mood.
Seeing the unseen - occultism literally means "hidden knowledge"
Knowledge will not save us
Spin clockwise(yang northern hemisphere/yin southern hemisphere) or counterclockwise (yin northern hemisphere/yang southern hemisphere) (torus spinning). Chant any of these mantras 3 times each while facing east, west, north(in the southern hemisphere), or south(in the northern hemisphere): "ieoua", "iao", "aum", and "om"(like "home"). Sleep with your head placed east, west, south(in northern hemisphere), or north(in southern hemisphere). Perform the Tibetan five rites(a series of yoga stretches)at least 3 times each.

For everyone knocking this video for being mistitled, She's literally bringing the unseen into the seen world and that EXACTLY is magic. She is working with elements in an alchemical way to transform reality.
I feel you sister. I have found more than than 30 four leaf clovers, about 10 five leaf clovers and 2 six leaf clovers. I almost feel like I'm betraying Spirit by sharing this because each time I spot one it's been at a time when I've been thinking about something very personal/profound. I've had many truly profound experiences within nature (too many to post in a YT comment) that I haven't even shared with my beloved family members. Magic is real! Spirit is real!
I really enjoyed this talk. And, as a long time Witch and Pagan, I get the frustration that many are expressing over the title. But I think while the wording is off, the idea that she has been inspired by magick, or at least her perception of it, is present here from beginning to end. Witchcraft is about creating change through channeled energy. Alchemy is the practice of using the energy locked within physical nature and natural substances to create change. Alchemy is not witchcraft, bug both witchcraft and alchemy ARE forms of magick. She makes no claim to being a witch, instead she calls herself an alchemist. And her talk is about alchemical magick. So while you, and I, may have read the title and made an assumption about the type of magick she would be discussing, the issue is not her talk or the title, but our presumption that our views, practices, or beliefs are the only valid ones to use the term magick.
this is an amazing and well-worded comment. As someone who is also a practicing witch, I came for the magik and stayed for the alchemy
Well said sabrina 👏
Magick, science, alchemy...a very modern and refreshed view on the unseen. So happy to hear such a young, wise and very intelligent lady share her dream and vision. Believe in yourself and anything is possible🌹💜🌹 Also a huge Alexander Mcqueen fan✨
You are such an inspiration Laura!! Thank you for sharing your honesty, your imagination and work. You embody what it means to be a "witch"! Brilliantly feminine, inspiring and nature focused. Your works should be every where!!
None of this talk had anything to do with applying Magick to every day life or anything like that. Cheap gimmicks to get people to watch. sick shirt though
What does any of those things have to do with what the talk was supposed to be about? It's titled "Why I believe in Magick" she then proceeded to explain exactly why she believes in it. Now she may have gone off on short tangents but they weren't entirely unrelated to the subject. I'm just not sure how this could be a cheap gimmick.
Well now I’m gonna watch for the shirt
No, she then proceeded to brag about all her accomplishments which were achieved with Science. That's great, but that has zero to do with Magick.
Its in the description @Alex Marques "Material alchemist Lauren Bowker believes in Magick and applies this to her work every day. In this talk, Lauren discusses the career she’s built on this premise and explores the uses of her Magick in everyday life."
How is it not a cheap gimmick? Using spirituality as click bait for something that has nothing to do with it. Its an occult aesthetic put on in order to get peoples attention. None of it had anything to do with Magick at all.
Uh, MATERIAL ALCHEMIST, NOT WICCAN. The types of Magic are entirely different. A Material Alchemist would be more scientifically minded, they pursue magic through science. I don't understand why a different type of spiritually is discredited just because it is not a common one. Before denouncing a spiritual path, learn about it.
I like it, “Magic is just science, we don’t understand, yet” 💗😊💕
I like to think I can connect with my cards through the neurons in my brain and heart. There’s no delay because time or distance isn’t a factor when it’s filled with faith. And basically just trust my intuition to speak. It’s the quantum physics behind it. Makes things like a conscious universe or God seem very possible.
@@worldfamoustarot8443 EXACTLY! Isn’t it amazing how in different areas...people connect to the divine? My aunt does Tarot cards, too. The religious pray and they call it having “blind faith”. I do my connect through dreams/intuition/meditation. Our lives are so much more enriched when we know and trust that our guides/universe/God/angels/or whatever you want to call them. They are guiding us down our correct path. Also knowing that not everything is going to be good/pleasant or easy....we still have challenges, just like we truly want and need it to be. Thank you so much for explaining how the cards work for you....I always wondered....it’s great to get an understandable explanation put into words....See! everything does get revealed to us, sometimes we have to wait for answers to come at the right time. 💕💗😊Much LOVE to YOU😊💗💕

You are super inspiring... the combining of things that one may not see as being able to be paired... and then putting them into "practice" into the world so others can experience them personally is beyond brilliant! To me...this is the purest form of magick!
Wrong title for this - very misleading
Explain why this was titled wrong? It's titled "Why I believe in Magick" she then proceeded to explain exactly why she believes in it. Now she may have gone off on short tangents but they weren't entirely unrelated to the subject. I'm just not sure how this is titled wrongly.
Alex Marques she never actually talks about magick. she talks about science and art, but she never said anything about magick or clearly explained her reason for believing in magick.
She believes in Magick is science we don't understand yet. In other words, she believes in magic because of science. I'm of a similar belief. when science proved that my magic worked, is when I believed in magic. I don't believe everything described in magic is possible, but I believe magic is possible. I believe you can send intent, but that doesn't mean that something *will* happen every time. For instance a horoscope is about as good of a reflection of a person as an internet personality test.Sometimes it hits just right, sometimes it makes not a lick of sense. Magick is the same way. I believe in Magick because it *does* line up for the laws of nature. Nothing it couldn't allow, is allowable in nature. So if I was going to discuss my belief in Magick, I would start by talking about Science.
Her Magus is misleading and we don't need talks en masse about the occult.
EZ Betelgeuse -_-
Nothing she spoke about pertained to "magick". I didn't post my opinion to argue, I posted because I felt the video had nothing to do with the title. You are free to disagree, but I digress.
This girl is out of this world. Such an immensely creative and curious mind is needed to make the changes and developments she did. BRAVO!
Influencing how other people feel in any way/communication medium is moving energy with intention which is magick.
No, it's called manipulation!
This was so different than what I was anticipating from the title, and I'm so glad I watched it! This was truly awe-inspiring!
I appreciate her inventions, they are quite beautiful.
Sometimes magick isn't as practical as some might think magick is more than items and spell magick changed her life in powerful strong way she's fantastic ..blessed be🌚🖤
Spoken from the soul. I have so much love and respect for this real woman.
Waste of time- wrong title for topic. Should have known TED Talks would not cover such a topic.
Yes, it shouldn't be titled magic with a "k". That said, TED stands for technology, education, and design, so it's entirely relevant to that.
gyniest I don't quite understand, friend.
Yeah for real i was waiting for her to talk about some occult stuff
If you guys knew anything about alchemy I mean real genuine alchemy you would understand that she did cover the topic

Ok she’s amazing and this has to be one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard of
Wow. Can’t even. This is amazing.
the occult are the ancient teachings and ways magick works and is beautiful
I wasnt sure what i was getting into by clicking this video but i truly enjoyed this and learning about everything she has came up with (:
Excellent take, echoes of Arthur C.Clarke. 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'. God does play dice with the universe, but so can we, if we accept that we are an integral part of the universe and not separated from it.
Wow, amazing talk and an inspirational woman. She is so humble and really cares about the planet and nature.
Magick is real. I'm a priest in the Independent Church and every time I consecrate Communion, it is magick. Magick is all around us if we have eyes to see.
How do you go about “consecrating” something??
Excellent ideas- true magic I think
I think for everyone saying the title is misleading and saying it has nothing to do with magick-- It couldn't be farther from the truth! I've been saying this same thing for so long. Magick is simply science we don't yet understand. All these incredible pieces of functioning, beautiful artwork she helped create are something that someone at one point may have considered to be impossible, something someone would have considered to be magick. Take these examples she gave and put them into many contexts! Without the belief in the magickal and impossible these things and many more to come may never exist.
this talk never promised the explanation of magick in every day life. It took me a little while into the discussion to really tie together the message she was trying to bring before just plainly saying it at the end. However once you fully grasp it I think its a really great way to look at the concept of magick, and alchemy.
How have I not heard about these incredible fashion pieces?!
Everyone's saying that this title is misleading, and it is to some degree, but I'd say that science *is* magic.
We can just look at "magic" in a more logical way nowadays.
So I pretty much just sat through her fashion line, and she was a spirited child in the beginning.
I LOVE Spirographic still!!! In fact, so much so that we gave our
9 year old granddaughter a Spirograph for Christmas when she was 7 - and SHE LOVES IT TOO!!! How wonderful!!! Magic/Magick is all around us every day. As we grow up, we forget to remember to see it every day in the world around us; but it is there. I liken some aspects of Magic/Magick to "The Force" as it was written about in the first book, which I read when I was twelve after my Dad had finished reading it. Learn something new every single day. Learn how to be a student of the universe, the world in which we live. Ah, yes...Glamour Magick. Have you ever noticed how VIBRANT the leaves on the trees, grass flowers, etc. are, not after it rains, BUT when it is raining? Did you know when you see a "rainbow" it's actually a complete circle not an arc at all? It looks appears the way we see it because we can only see to the horizon. NASA has some beautiful pictures of a full "rainbow". Magick and science are very old, very close friends. I learned to use color in place of the numerical scale for pain going through EMT training years ago and I use it to this very day. The color scale for pain is far more accurate then the 1-10 numerical pain scale in every way, in my opinion. Thank you so much for sharing this Lauren! This has been both Amazing and Magickal!❤ I now have your company bookmarked. 😉

Super cool inventions!! But I don't agree with her statement that "Magic is science we don't understand yet," bit, which suggests that once we understand it it is no longer magic (or that magic is illegitimate compared to science). I read something recently which said the act of discovery by a technical and empirical process by observation is the essence of science; whereas, the act of discovery by mystical means which is intuitive and participatory, but it is still experimental, is magic.
This is incredible and Im so blown away by every bit of it. Talk about a beautiful mind...
Fascinating topic, but HOLY cow, take a breath! ❤️🙏🏻
I have to say, I really love her work. Very inspirational stuff.
yall nature is magic...as a witch (one of many obvi) i was delighted to hear her talk on the health of oneself and the natural world and gauging/exploring/staying curious of that through an art journey
It's like Paul Foster Case often said, and more recently Alan Moore, that you go within to find novel concepts and ideas and apply initiative to bring them to the world around you. Fascinating stuff, hopefully these fashion and chemistry ideas will increasingly find a home context!
come on really? Please take off the magick title !!!
Amazing. I too came here for magick, as I believe. You show such a beautiful way to interpret a piece of magick I never experienced before. Thank you.
I LOVED my Spirograph!!!!
The patterns you design with spirograph can make you understand the many superpattens that you may notice in nature and the infinite universe.
Beautiful, innovative and inspired. To me that's magical. I'm very impressed.
she is using magical symbols in her art. But the real question is how much magick is used in the fashion industry.
shes really great!
ill bet her dad is super proud :)
It has nothing to do with magick.
Neither do you
@@DrengrMike your test deficiency is clouding your judgment, Michelle
It’s not about magicK as witchcraft for someone who waits for that, it’s about ‘the miracles can happen’ kind of magic story, the dreams come through, and about Fashion Design...not occult, not craft. Can be misleading, but it’s hard to expect from TEDx Talks to hear the occult talks...I am too pessimistic to see the beauty in everything, and sprinkle fairy dust over everything , life kicked me too hard, it just hurts for way too long, but good for the ‘ enthusiasts’, if you are able to then keep going with it.
That was true beauty...your imagination, blossoming into reality with a purpose.. changing the world for the better...

I never believed in magic till I felt the holy spirit, that makes me feel brave to trod the Dark lands!
There is 2 types of alchemy , one is of science , and the other is understanding the aspects of consciousness and the soul. As for this young lady , based on what she's said here I consider her a product of the former. But as for magick which has more to do with the latter , I can see how she would have an interest in it but to quote her statement at the end ," magick is just science we don't understand yet ", this is far from the truth. As an occultist myself I feel she has achieved something great by taking her ideas from atzuluth to assiah , and now they exist in the material world . So I can say she has gone down the tree maybe by a different method but the difference is the steps applied and what did you get from the journey. This is the difference between magick and baking a cake using different recipes. And the x factor that the witch understands as well as the reason certain ingredients have to be a certain way in accordance to other factors that will effect the overall outcome. Example the difference between homemade pies with local fruit in season and a pie you get made in a factory that's not fresh and is held together with chemicals and preservatives . The homemade pie is magick , the factory pie is science. And though magick is a science , it is not science. Science like math is a language to understand magick , but magick is the art of working in accordance with the universal order of things. *
This lady is amazing

Very interesting video topic and thank you for teaching me something new
I don't understand why it's absolutely necessary for her to dress as a stereotypical halloween witch in order to talk about magick.
Because this is a tedtalk and Ted talks somehow do that to just about everything
Because she’s an individual and she can dress anyway friggin way she wants. FFS how should she dress? Geez why so judgy?
Jacqueline Rimmer she can dress however she wants, ye her talk had absolutely nothing to do with magick.
Because this is more herself than anything
Absolutely brilliant. Such an amazing talk!
Liked it. Thanks.

Misleading title
So, you never really explained why you believe in magick. I believe in magick because I've done magical operations for certain effects and have achieved those effects.
This was basically just an advert for the stuff you make.
It's a bad title, granted, but it's a TED talk, so of course it's appropriate for an actual designer to talk about technology and design.
SOCIALMEDIAISWEIRD why should he? You repent to the gods for your worship of a middle eastern mind virus called Jehovah! Your days of corrupting our people and diluting their power are over demon Abrahamist
As an atheist, I really can’t get behind the concept of magic of any kind. However, there are scientific evidence for certain herbs and plants being beneficial for anxiety, procrastination, etc - like teas and stuff. So there is SOME stuff behind this. I just wish it was easier to get to that real stuff within having to go through all that BS
why i believe in magic - because its everywhere and everything and we've been conditioned to believe it's a fictional fairy-tale

She tried to take a third or unknown angle but instead it came across as misleading
Do you believe in Magick ? In a young girls heart...
Amazing.
This would be a really nice talk if she would just stop bashing technology and current culture. Many of us that believe in magic(k) and have integrated in every aspect of our lives in spite of a Judeo-Christian cultural majority. "drawing trees instead of Googling them." What are you trying to say? I raised my kids both to accept miracles, respect the ways of our ancestors but I'm sorry, Google is your friend! Far be it for any wise magician to willingly look down upon a tool that facilitates universal knowledge. Witches need money and I made mine being a Photoshop expert. The point here, integrate your practice in today's culture, blend in and really demonstrate (if only to yourself) that a mage can be anywhere and look like anyone.
"Google is your friend" is an overstatement. It's using you as much as you are using it.
Other than the environmentalism about carbon as another pagan this resonated with me in ways. I wish I could cite instances of magic to her myself as I'm aware of a lot of them myself. - YQA
That Is beautiful! Astonishing even! I never found something remotely interesting about fashion but this video radically changed my point of view. I'm not even talking about the dismissal of the false dicotomy science vs magic that also Is fresh and beautiful
I came here expecting her to say “I myself am strange and unusual.”
Learned about stylish and purpose driven eco fashion pieces instead.
