Congrats on your manga set haul from the Czech Republic good for you . X-ibit is a rapper lol. Didn’t know you’re an amateur book binder kudos to you . I collect and read antique books and have a professional book restorer/binder in Oregon. She apprenticed for years under a master binder and finally obtained her trade profession status. Be prepared for hard work and long hours for your 5 volume AOT leather hard cover re-binding. Would love to see how it turns out if you also love it you can keep it or sell it to discerning manga collectors who will buy it in a second . If you sell it fast you can start selling and converting more AOT into custom sets but be careful it’d easy to burn out . Going rate for professional book binders is $40 per hour WELL worth it but again , the human hand and touch works slowly books are a beautiful treasure and should never be rushed , EVER! ;-)
Yeah I’m very sad I cannot have it bound the way I would want with a rounded spine (due to it being a glued / machine bound “perfect binding”) 😔. So really it’s going to be a cosmetic piece of work. But working with the book boards, leather, etc. will all be the same essentially so it will be great practice for me. I’m also sad that all the US aniline dyed leather dealers are out of stock!! Either way it would have been so expensive compared to dyeing by hand with typical leather dyes so maybe it would have not been practical in the long run for this project 😭😭

Would you recommend Sazuka to someone with no nostalgia for it? I was thinking about picking up a few volumes I saw but was unsure. Also that idea you have for the attack on Titan books sounds awesome! Can’t wait to see that!

So so sorry about your supply line “shortages “ for your book binding project ! With high material costs yes you’re less likely to invest in premium leathers I understand completely. Clearly you enjoy AOT a great deal and you can still pursue in the future if you like . With book repairs and rare sets very often if the antique set is over $3k you try to get as good condition as possible. If there’s only one left and it’s VG condition for 3 vol set that’s fine . But sometimes there’s only ONE set available in “good” for $500 condition and collectors will have to spend $2500 anyway just to bump it up to VG condition. All fo the restorations I commissioned meant there were no other comparable volumes in Abebooks inventory at any price - so my investment holds because it’d still unlikely to rare set will ever appear or re-surface on the internet from book dealers ever again :-)

I got my full set for $150 and hmmm I’m not too sure tbh it’s tough to gauge the value of new/sealed OOP manga. For me personally I think they should be valued a lot higher than they typically go for but from what I’ve seen they are usually around the same price of unsealed copies. So yeah it’s hard for me to say
