This was a very helpful presentation. I am looking, maybe sooner than not, at my trajectory toward the operating room to have scoliosis surgery. At age 64, this is quite scary for me. One of my major concerns is my lack of support systems after surgery. I have no close relatives and am, essentially, alone. I'm trying to hold off the surgery as I still need to work. Though, my scoliosis and pain seems to worsen almost daily.

Very helpful information! I can relate to all of these patients. I use to be very active when i was younger with scoliosis. Now i am in constant pain and can't find a comfortable way to sleep. And having trouble walking. Standing, lifting and bending. At the same time, I am afraid of surgery. I also find it difficult to breathe at times. I look forward to meeting Dr. A!

My son has a 57 curve scoliosis. It does effect his lungs as he gets out of breath. He was offered surgery but he is only 16 and was too scared to have the surgery. We was told that the growth of the curve may slow down now or get worse

Thank you for posting this video. A lot of the videos online are stories of women. I appreciate seeing men as part of your discussion.

I am crying while watching this. I am 50 years old and have severe (I believe) scoliosis. I am in constant pain, have trouble lifting my arms up, tire easily, get SOB with activity, numbness and tingling to my legs, proprioception is off, and use assistive devices to walk. I had an X-ray a year ago, but I’m a medi-cal patient in CA and they’re slow with things. I was an ICU nurse for 25 years and very active and independent. I cry everyday and I want to get the surgery. Im I not afraid to have surgery. I feel like my life couldn’t get worse. I have always had some mild pain, but NOTHING like this. I’d love to talk to anyone about this. Thank you. And PS I did some research work at Emory hospital back in 2014 with an assistive liver device under Dr. “Rom” and love that place. :). Anyway, I’m in pain and depressed and have really really loved watching this. Gives me hope. And post surgery pain sounds Like it won’t be any worse than pain now. 😊

If you have osteoporosis with scoliosis Dr. A can't help you. Wish I had been told prior to sending doctors' notes and getting all CDs for an appointment. This should be explained before making the appointment and in future videos.

I have experienced the same thing. All excited to see a surgeon to be told I was hopeless. I have heard of companies that make bone building material that surgeons are using now to hold/anchor instrumentation. I know very little about it but intend to find out. If I learn anything, and it gives us hope that we may be able to have surgical procedures and get out of our misery, I will post that here in response to your comment just as I am posting this message. If you do not hear a thing within a month it means either I was dreaming or the material will not work for osteoporosis but maybe osteopenia. My bones are pretty bad but surgeons are saying they can now perform MIS(minimally invasive surgery) on patients who were formerly excluded due to spinal deterioration as osteoporosis, degenerative disc disease. One question is how bad does osteoporosis have to be to be excluded. Where is the line drawn, at what T score. My T score e.g. is about -T4....if that is how it is put. I forget and can look at my dexa scan. Good luck. So sorry about what you are going through. I understand the pain is debilitating. I also cannot sit at my desktop so use stupid cell phone. Take heart as advances in the spine universe are rapidly moving forward. Take a look at Becker's Spine Review among many publications and organizations as The Nationsl Scoliosis Foundation and Scoliosis Research Society. Becker's is mind blowing - their emails if you subscribe list about 8 or so articles - just reading the titles it is one innovation after another, another new ASC ( ambulatory surgery center), more awards for worthy surgeons, and lawsuits but most noteworthy is the pace of innovation. Warning: overwhelming.

Are you by any chance doing more of these in the future? I had spinal Fusion surgery in June of 2021. So I'm almost 14 months post op. And I would love to participate in the next one.

I live alone, so I won't be able to have scoliosis surgery.

So embarrassing for me and I know it may embarrassing for my grandchildren. I've had it since I was 9 and 60 now. I have to wear larger shirts BC my hump takes up room in my clothing. I always?wanted to wear tank tops n backless clothing when I was younger.. don't know how am I going to have this pain till God calls me home. I sear a size. 7Jr in pants and weigh 134pds n have to wear a very large top. It has taken away a lot of my life with my family BC I can't sit long
to watch them doing their sports or family functions. . I can't even reach up or braid my hair or take a shower I have to bend my legs that hurt too but it takes some of my pain to manage to do anything. I ?as 5ft7 and now 5ft5.

    How bad were the curves???

I dont understand why Connie had to have the spinal fusion involve the entirety of her spine including the thoracic area when in fact her only problems were situated in the L4-L5 area only and her thoracic main curve wasnt progressing, she could've done well with just a single level fusion or even a selective lumbar one. Is the general consensus to just fuse the entire deformity as well because the assumption with you surgeons is that if the deformity and a big thoracic curve is left unfused, it would almost certainly involve more degeneration and cysts to occur in the lumbar area L4-L1 later on in life due to the adjacent level degenerative nature of having spinal fusion had L4 and L5 only been addressed?
