  • This video reconstructs the Nortwest Palace of Ashurnasirpal II at Nimrud (near modern Mosul in northern Iraq) as it would have appeared during his reign in the ninth century B.C. The video moves from the outer courtyards of the palace into the throne room and beyond into more private spaces, perhaps used for rituals. The video also shows the original location and painted colors of the relief depicting the winged, eagle-headed figure included in the exhibition Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age (on view September 22, 2014-January 4, 2015).

I like how CG Assyrian figures were added into the reconstruction too. The CG people help to give you an idea of the scale of the buildings and the sculptures. Plus they help remind you that these places were once lived in.

Now this palace exists only in this 3D mode. Freaking ISIS destroyed this impressive palace that survived for thousands of years.

Some of the most unimagineably powerful people in History sat in that Throne Room. Amazing.

God I love this. Amazing! Way to go to the museum for creating this. I wish all the Assyrian empire kingdoms had one of these. This is Nimrud. Id love to see Nineveh and Khorsabad and of course Babylon would be awesome.

Very impressive video. Would liked to have seen representations of everyday activities, altho that would have been a stretch perhaps. Thank you to the producers for not adding a music soundtrack!

Nice video, a little sterile with the lack of living things but there is already enough speculation in the video already . I love old ruins and I like to see them recreated even if it's speculative. It brings it to life even if they can't know exactly how it looked. I like how they commented that the carving had been scanned for colors so they knew what colors to use for the recreations. I can sometimes in my minds eye see the people that used to walk the halls and palaces, or homes.

I was lucky enough to see statues of the winged bulls in Rome. They had been taken to Rome for safe keeping from isis and were set up at the Colloseum on the day I went there

Nearly six million Assyrian Christians dot the world.
Mesopotamia is the homeland of the Assyrians. The famous royal cities of the Assyrians, Ashur, Nimrud (Kalhu), Arbela, Dur-Sharrukin and Nineveh were built in it. The Assyrians ruled for approximately 1,300 years - from about 2000 B.C. to 612/10 BC - in northern Mesopotamia an ancient landscape between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. A clear reference to the existence of the Assyrians, on the other hand, can already be found in the Old Testament (1st Book of Moses 2:14).
    There it says:
    * “… the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates..."

Knightonagreyhorse they were painted, the palace inside of it also, but they had to get the colours right, and that would take time.
