Snowy Seeds to Blossoms: Winter Sowing Flowers and Herbs How-To

Winter sowing is an excellent way to get a head start on your spring planting, especially if you live in a colder climate. By using old milk jugs, you can easily create mini-greenhouses that will protect your seeds from the elements and provide the perfect growing environment. To get started, simply drill a few holes in the bottom of your milk jug for drainage. Next, cut around the jug, leaving a small strip intact at the handle for a hinge. Fill the jug with wet dirt and plant your seeds. Tape the jug shut and place it outside in a spot where it will get morning sun and afternoon shade. Make sure it is exposed to rain and snow.
Once your seeds begin to sprout in the spring, you can cut off the tops of the jugs to allow them to grow freely. However, if there is still a chance of frost, you may want to cover them with a clear tote at night to protect them. This technique is also useful for starting herbs, vegetables, and other plants indoors. With just a few simple steps, you can have beautiful blooms and fresh herbs to enjoy all season long.
