Bicycle Touring on my Surly Ogre in Bolivia's Central Highlands

  • After a drunken blur of an overnight bus ride from Uyuni, Bolivia, my Surly Ogre and I find ourselves in the Bolivian Central Highlands in the Bolivian Capitol of Sucre. Only by the grace of some higher power are we in one piece.
First impressions? Sucre is the crown jewel of Bolivia if not all of South America. Maybe all the Americas. The Colonial city of Sucre is one of the most beautiful I have ever experienced. It was love at first sight.
Unfortunately, after a couple of days of exploring the city, I could feel the roots developing from the soles of my feet-time to move on.
Sorry to keep you waiting, Sucre; our time will come. So, I head off into the mountains in search of adventure.
After a tough day of cycling through the Andes, I am sunburned, hungry, and exhausted. But then, I find excitement and knocked on my ass as a violent dust storm stops me in my tracks.
The next day I am back on the road, but I am sidelined again by more bad weather. Making the best of things, I take refuge in the small mountain town of Aiquile.
Aiquile is full of charm, but I can't help but miss my sweet Sucre.
I awake to the most memorably perfect day and begin riding. The temperature, smells, sounds, and sights form a complete symphony. I am overwhelmed in the moment. Here is why I love bicycle touring. Here is where I feel at home.

I’m liking this. Its kinda choppy, but the realism of you experience is coming through. 😊

45 miles in 8 hours seems really good considering the terrain.

Yeah I agree. It just feels so slow and frustrating. Makes for a long day.

45 miles is a good day on an Ogre. I seldom do over 60 on mine.

I have an inexpensive WTB seat and have no issues. I switched it out for a high end Brooks. I guess my butt has cheap taste.

Would love to know how you arranged/ navigated the overnight bus with the bike in tow! I'm currently in Oruro, heading south towards Santiago and have been curious if they would take bikes on the busses! Cost? Ease? Would love some details!

Super easy. I did it three different times. Cost was low. A few dollars, but it was paid directly to the luggage guy when I went to load the bike. I also think there’s a train South to Uyuni. I met some guys who took it and it sounded pretty cool.
