SpongeBob means so much to me and I truly want to do a video talking about the entire series but recent events have VASTLY complicated the situation. If you have any information that can allow me to respectfully research the topic, please let me know. I want to do my best as a researcher but also as a considerate person to Stephen, his loved ones, and his legacy

The only spinoff that would be acceptable would be a Patchy the Pirate show
Edit: I see that I caught a lot of people's attention so now I must say that even if it would be a good idea for a show... Nickelodeon would probably find a way to make the show unwatchable.

Ok I’m not defending these shows or the shady actions of the network. But the fact that it ran from the nineties to 2018 even before Stephen passed…
I’m sure there was plenty of love and genuine artistry from the crew behind it but a show doesn’t run for multiple decades because people wanted it too.
At some point it’s gonna be about money and I say we hit that point ages ago.

It was a terrible Jimmy newton spin-off that had a lot of gross out humour (like every 5 seconds), probably the worst intro I have ever see in a cartoon and somehow the cgi is worst then the original show, even when company should have improved its animation after all those years.
      That's basically the show

@@ZephyrUltimate_ they take only sheen from the show, and put him on an alien world with an alien slug carl and some hot blue chick. The art style is worse than the cgi from sharkboy and lavagirl, and the writing is like the writers took the scene from the movie where sheen was doing show and tell, and decided sheen was to intelegent there and they needed to dumb him down. Without neutron there to contrast with it just doesn't work. Sheen's role in the original neutron show was to have a character that was living in such an obvious fantasy that jimmy and his crazy inventions could still feel grounded and relatively real in comparison. In planet sheen he literally is in the fantasy and nothing is grounded about anything.

I think its not just about the spinofs, its about the quality of it. Both of them are realy, reeeealy generic. Spongebob had an original idea, an idea that could be explored for years and years: Underwater adventures with some cientific base but with cartoon logic so its interesting, somehow educative but not boring. BOTH spinofs ignore the original idea of spongebob. They could have done spinofs with better quality. Imagine a Mr Krabs show that somehow talked about economics but with cartoon logic, so kids can find it funny and learn at the same time.

@@PongoDaMan i get why that would be the normal reaction, but most of the best and highest rated animated shows were the ones that looked at complicated topics without infantilizing them or being to blunt or preachy, while also not forgetting to be fun and comedic when appropriate. As long as the writers showed both the good and the bad, rather than just the bad of a system they don't like or just the good of a system they do, then it would work fine. I could see mister crabs showing capitalism as he creates his restaurant and is driven to work hard and be rewarded for his effort, but that turning sour as he becomes obsessed with profit and starts being exploitive and using shadier business practices. Maybe even give plankton a win and have the chum bucket become a more popular competitor due to not being as exploitive, thus causing mister crabs to have to reform some to regain his lost marketshare. I could also see sandy introducing spongebob to the idea of communism and them getting everyone involved. It working out fine and maybe squidward gets a chance to thrive under an environment where he is able to create art without stress, until perhaps someone gets mad at patrick for gaining even though he isn't contributing anything of value, and meanwhile mister crabs rises up the ranks until he is in control of distribution where his greed causes him to distribute unequally and skim some off the top for himself.

I've seen at least one to two episodes of the two spin-offs and they weren't horrible, just MEH their both passable. It remains to be seen if any of them will last longer than one or two seasons before they get cancelled or Nick decides that they have made enough of them to get their money's worth and just end their run to move on to their next idea to cash in on the franchise. You know I'm starting to think SpongeBob's creator made Mr. Crabs as a satire of Nickelodeon executives given that his "I like money!" quote is just so appropriate to describe Nick waiting to greenlighting spinoff shows and trying to create a SpongeBob cinematic universe, after the creator's death (though any of them that have a conscience would probably justify it to themselves and/or others by saying something like, "but we think he would have wanted it this way!" even if its just so they can sleep at night).

@@dannythedumbass3081 Honestly as a quasi-professional writer, this is how I'd handle it. The story is Squidward is at a low point in his life. His art isn't selling, nobody appreciates him for his musical skills and he questions how it all came to this. After seeing how depressing and mundane his life has become, rejection after rejection, he gets a letter from a reality show akin to America's Got Talent, American Idol, with a bit of Total Drama Island thrown in. It seems Spongebob wrote a letter nominating him for the show and they want Squidward. At first he's happy, thinking he's found a place where he can showcase his talent. However, when the votes come in, we see him desperate to stay on the show each week. Changing his look and music, doing more absurd and over the top things to win an audience. However, eventually he realizes what he's become, what he's been doing to make it this far and what the show is really about. It's a story about figuring out what you want in life, what success really is and that it's never too late to chase your dreams.

Worth noting that one of the "mistakes" that actually helped in the long run was when Marvel comics used Samuel L. Jackson's likeness for Nick Fury Jr., and he went after them for it. They were on the verge of absolute bankruptcy, so a deal was struck: If Nick Fury Jr. was ever slated to appear in a movie, Samuel would be cast without question. Decades later, and there's no alternative to MCU Fury; he's just THAT iconic. Dumb luck and a bit of shrewd business made one of the best superhero movie castings to this day, and it's impossible to imagine where the MCU would be without Sam.

indeed- it doesn't make much sense (imo) to try and weave some coherent story out of the collection of previous episodes the way Marvel can with it's comics. And you can tell the limits of the setting are already pushing back when their first ideas are "when they were younger" and "what if we focused on Patrick instead?"
Those also seem to miss the point of how the MCU if that's what they were going for. Only a surface level resemblance to some of the things that are done in it rather than an attempt to do the heavy lifting to launch such a thing.
Succeeding would necessarily mean leaving behind a lot of what Spongebob previously was- which might not be for the better anyway.

It was really something special. There were a ton of cartoons around that time; some kids watched them, some didn’t. EVERY kid watched SpongeBob. Quoting the show was almost like a secret language that adults couldn’t understand but kids understood perfectly. We would cry laughing just by making SB references all day. There was this real, unspoken feeling that it was “our show.” Older kids and adults couldn’t understand why were so obsessed w/ this square, nerdy sponge.

    • @NicoTheCinderace
      @NicoTheCinderace 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@icecreamhero2375 1)"Why does the creators opinion matter?"
Because it's important in determining whether this was done in good faith or not. If this spinoff was done _against_ the wishes of the creator, who are we for supporting it and raising awareness to it?
      2) "Stephen didn't want spinoffs. So what. Its by the same crew that makes normal Spongebob so its in good hands. Compromise is sometimes apart of life."
That statement is actually a misconception. It's not that Stephen Hillenburg didn't _want_ spinoffs, he didn't see them _working._ There's a completely difference.
      3) "Ever heard of the phrase Death of the Author"
I'm... not sure if that genuinely applies here.
      4) "If I give the shows a good review it will draw more people to them. No they will be successful regardless"
Half true. It will be successful regardless of whether it gets a good review or not, but giving a good review _will_ draw more people to it.
      5) "Its bad when Spongebob has a spinoff but Loony Tunes can have a billion. Logic?"
Because Spongebob isn't Loony Tunes, firstly. Second, making far too many spinoffs spreads your fanbase thin, and can easily overwhelm them. Hillenburg said that he didn't see spongebob spinoffs working. It's also the timing of when the spinoffs were announced that got fans a little upset.
For reference, it was about two months after Hillenburg's passing that they announced it. They could've waited a year to announce it, and it would've been fine.
      6) "Its better to actually watch them and judge them on their own merit."
Debatable. Some just don't think it's worth touching because of how sleazy it seems by Nick... and I can't exactly blame them.

I'm not even gonna lie I shrieked when you showed King Mickey.
Dude is BADASS in Kingdom Hearts you can't deny that. Like....Damn. He's legit THREE FEET TALL yet has the same air as freakin Nick Fury-when he enters a room, YOU PAY TF ATTENTION TO WHAT HE'S GONNA SAY. I will say that Bret Iwan just isn't the SAME as Wayne but he still does a GOOD job having that COMMANDING PRESCENCE a king would need to have. THAT is why Mickey works-because as you said, he's a blank slate. I mean sure he has PERSONALITY, but let's be real. He's a cartoon mouse. You can do a lot with that.
You can have him travel into a mirror into a world with forgotten toons and meet with his long lost family member. You can have him run a freaking comedy club where TONS of other toons can come together. You can have him be a hunter in a forest, run into ghosts and goblins, and fairy tale creatures. You can have him be a king, forging a bond with a young man, that will be one of the greatest mentor mentee relationships in all video game history. Yeah I said it. But with Spongebob, he's a sponge. Under the sea. That's it. Simple. And that's fine. Nick needs to realize, ALL studios need to realize, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE MARVEL. And it would be a GOOD THING for consumers IF YOU WEREN'T. To add DIVERSITY.

I like, only watched 1 Star Wars movie in my life, & that was the 7th in the movie series, & the CGI Clone Wars cartoon, but it seems to be going downhill. Star Trek is just as political as it was back then surprisingly enough. Scooby-Doo just had a crossover with Courage the Cowardly Dog, & it was great! Muppets Now sucks unfortunately. DC is digging its own grave at this point, & Marvel is just going to be nothing, but movies, & TV shows for now on.

Honestly my biggest problem is that this obsession with Spongebob prevents other shows and creators from getting their time to shine on Nickelodeon.
Think of all the shows that were canceled because they couldn’t get Spongebob ratings and many more that never got green lit. Both Disney and Cartoon Network walked into their streaming services with huge libraries to offer, while Viacom/Nick are playing a desperate game of catch-up on paramount plus. And aside from the Avatar franchise and Loud House, I can’t think of the last time Nickelodeon made a splash in the animation industry.
It’s the same thing that killed off the Fox TV animation when they put all their eggs into the Simpsons and Seth McFarlane baskets; and look how that turned out.
And now by giving more attention and resources to Spongebob, it kills off further opportunities for other ideas to shine.
I mean Sponge has been around for almost a quarter of a century now, isn’t that enough? Isn’t it time for something else to have the spotlight.
And it makes me scared to think what’s going to happen with Spongebob and the Simpsons when one of the voice actors dies. Is that how these shows are going to end? To avoid public backlash in order to respect the legacy and contributions of a dead cast member.
Or will they force the shows to continue, recasting the characters, or even worse deep faking synthesized voices of the actors after they died? SpongeBob should never have been forced into this position and it should been allowed to retire long ago with its dignity intact.
But Viacom needs something to pay the bills and sell paramount plus, so that’s all spongebob has become now. And that’s sad.

I remember seeing some things talking about how hillenberg had bigger plans for the movie but they were cut for various reasons, including a live action human involved. execs cut it back tho and now we have sponge on the run being boring and shoving keeanu reeves in our face as if thats worth paying the ticket price

Honestly, the fact that these spin-offs were bad and the third movie was just promotion for them was more insulting then these (shakey) allegations that Stephen wouldn't have approved of them.

The movie was abysmal but the Kamp Koral show is the same quality as the Normal Show. Alot of the episodes are super funny. I particularly love Kitchen Sponge and the Nudist Beach episode.

The worse part about Kamp Koral and The Patrick Show was that they were going to happen no matter what. Even if Hillenburg didn't want them, Nickelodeon already made preparations for it.

I remember I was just recovering from near death in the hospital, and I was watching some of the new Spongebob episodes. I loved them! I also saw TTG, and I loved that too! I hadn’t laughed in weeks at that point, and I finally felt something other than pain.
I grew up on Spongebob, it’s defined so much of my humor and character, and it’s such a staple in my family in general.
When Hillenburg died, it was heartbreaking. God, my household was just silent. I have so much respect for him, and now that he’s gone it just hurts even more.
What Nick is doing? Disrespecting his wishes? What he wanted? So SOON after his horrible passing? It’s awful. It fills me with rage.
I’ve loved this show for so long, but Nick certainly lost any respect they should have by doing this.

I hear the show has been going through a bit of a renaissance lately, newfound interest and love for the series by fans. Even though I don't watch it like I used to, the clips I see online are hilarious and enjoyable. I'm happy with how things went after a rough period.
I also believe that (and this is not a slight against Stephen, as I still like him and love his show), even if Stephen was against the idea spinoffs and crossovers, there wasn't much he could do, seeing as Spongebob was owned by Nick and Viacom and could do with as they pleased. If anything, I believe the spinoffs and to controversy they generated was just bad timing. Unless I'm mistaken, animation takes a very long time, as well as making a new show, so odds are, they were done well before he passed away and the announcement, like I said, were just bad timing.

A tiny part of me died when the comics ended. After a rough day it was fun to relax and laugh while reading it. Same with the old school cartoons.
