- For a moment House believed he was being help by Cuddy with his addiction to vicodin but` it turns out this was just another one of his hallucinations.

Season 5 Episode 24 "Both Sides Now"
House and the team are intrigued by Scott (Ashton Holmes), a man who has undergone a corpus callosotomy procedure to treat epilepsy. Due to this, both sides of his brain are at war for dominance over the body resulting in him having Alien Hand Syndrome where he can't control his left arm. At the same time Cuddy and House try to deal with their relationship after spending the night at his apartment. The next day, House tells Wilson that he has stopped taking drugs and had sex with Cuddy, to which Wilson responds "Wow". But he also tells him that Cuddy may be repressing her feelings for him, and is trying to avoid him. Finally House realizes that his night with Cuddy and her helping him to stop his addiction to Vicodin was all an elaborate hallucination. With his hallucinations spiraling out of control, House is forced to go into a mental health facility after becoming unable to tell fantasy from reality.

House was experienced enough and smart enough to connect acid reflux as a symptom with advanced pancreatic cancer. Palpation of his abdomen revealed him that there is tumor in late stage which is not treatable . Old man was terminaly ill and most probably will die soon. Once House realized that, he dropped his sarcasm and jokes and told Taub to take care of old man.

After how harsh and cruel House was to Cuddy, when she realizes something is really wrong with House, she immediately gets worried about him.
Good characters have depth lol, this show definitely defines it.
She’s known him for years. If he’s worried about himself, for real, she knows not to make light of it.

The most precious thing to house is his mind. When he realises that he can’t trust even his own brain (remember, EVERYBODY lies, even your subconscious), he knows he’s gone too far
A combination of his Vicodin addiction, Kurtner's suicide and his guilt about indirectly killing Amber.
Mind you, he was hallucinating Amber and Kurtner way before, so there were signs of him not doing well.

It's House's broken and shocked expression of face that made him worry. There were no words needed, he just was ready to hear what is there needed to do to help

It’s 2021 and still hurts to watch House slowly realizing that everything he did and felt (ask Cuddy’s help, detox from Vicodin, not feel pain on his leg without Vicodin, be willing to make things work with Cuddy) was all an hallucination.
And those last words from Amber and Kutner:
“So, this is the story you made up about who you are.” “Too bad it isn’t true.”
still give me the chills
At that point I didn't know the extend of the hallucination - whether or not the whole series was one big fake-out or not; that really drove it home for me.

I felt so bad for Eugene Schwartz. He was such a bundle of joy, and to just see it taken away in an instant when he finds out he has pancreatic cancer is heartbreaking.

I was conflicted between believing House was hallucinating, just wrong or poor Eugene. So I did the best thing I could in a situation like this...talk myself into House being wrong and grab a handkerchief while fighting back the tears 😅

It was sad, but the guy made it to at least 86. That's a decade over the national life expectancy. Also, when advanced seniors get cancer, because of their slow metabolism, cancers spread exceptionally slowly... Even aggressive cancers, such as pancreatic.
This guy had a gun pointed at him. Twice.
And yet this is the episode where he is scared shitless. And Hugh Laurie acted it beautifully.

And he has been shot
Even in a situation like that, you still have a degree of control. It may not be a whole lot of control depending on the situation you found yourself in, but you still have your mind to help you get through it and get yourself out.
Here? You have no control. You are completely and utterly at the whim of your brain. You lose all sense of self, can't tell what is and isn't real, and there's nothing you yourself can do about it. Nothing is more terrifying than that, not even death.
People have more fear being threatened by a knife or sword than they are of a firearm.
A firearm will dispatch a person in a millisecond making the transition from the physical to the spiritual relatively seamless.
A knife or sword never makes that transition. I don't even believe that about a perfect strike to decapitation would lead to a seamless and painless transition to the spiritual world.
Maybe it does, but I never want to find out.

Comedy is a very serious matter. You have to reach the audience, grab their cores with something, and then twist them enough to make them accept any comedown with a laugh.
That's why best comedians uses histories to get your curiosity, or touch very known aspects of life with opinions.
It's amazing to think all of this was caused by Kutner's death.
@Laurie Holdt Right when Kutner died it triggered back Houses guilt over how he was responsible for Amber's death, at the same time he felt responsible for Kutner's death because he was unable to see that he was depressed and suicidal.

No one is talking about how Cuddy instantly gets worried the moment she realizes something is wrong with house while he’s working out the pieces, despite having just been insanely angry and in tears because of this man, to walking over and cradling his cheek, letting him work it out himself until he finally says “no.. no i’m not okay”
She gets a lot of criticism and she doesn’t always make the right call, but she truly cares about him and wants the best for him above all else, even when he’s awful to her

I remember watching this when it first aired. Seeing Amber was bad enough. But seeing Kutner made it much, _much_ more terrifying.
Polymathically, Exactly so. Made even more so by the expression Kutner reflects to him. Utterly devastating.
I think that was the moment that hit me hardest, for some reason. House’s reaction when he saw Kutner, that split second of terror that he couldn’t play off with a sarcastic remark… man.

I love the fact that Dr Cuddy immediately recognize that he was having a psychotic break and went from hating him to realizing that none of it was his fault, making her immediately become supportive of House to make sure he's okay.
What gets me is that he's able to piece together what happens, even when his brain is telling him something completely different.
I think he is "able to piece together what happens" because HE IS HOUSE. Period. He would be the only human with a high iq enough to understand the malfuncioning of his screwed brain

The vulnerability we see in House when he says he isn’t okay and the look on his face when he walks into Wilson’s office... I have no words to describe the talent of Hugh Laurie. I also love the way everything was communicated between House, Cuddy, and Wilson as soon as they were in his office.

Wilson: What’s the problem?
House: I’m the problem.
Wilson: Oh God, this is a big problem.
House: I know, and I’m ready to work on it. Like really work on it.

Im a 26yrs old man, never cried when watching a series or a movie but this scene broke me.
He finally portrayed the final stages of guilt and loss on his face for once, that's all. We're always so used to the anger and denial house, seeing bargaining depression and acceptance jump back and forth in his eyes is what made it seem so impactful.
But yeah it's Hugh, he's been acting for ages now and of course is amazing. But that's all he really did. Express defeat and acceptance juxtaposed.

The scene where he says "No, I'm not ok" is pure damn art. Both the camerawork and acting is impeccable.
How much strength would it take to step over your own ego and willingly go to a mental asylum?
They've written a superhuman character without superpowers.
It's so telling that Amber and Kutner show up at the moment he realizes it. It seems he never let them go
Their deaths are just two of many demons he'd been keeping at bay. They were the first in a parade of demons that finally made it to the surface.
When you realize that the talks with the various characters are hallucinations, you figure out that what the characters say and believe are things that House thinks and believes. And if you listen back with this mindset, you'll totally get his demons, his fears, the walls that he has built to justify being alone and miserable. It's heartbreaking.
Imagine being Wilson and in comes this monolith of a man, that you've known for years, crumbling like gravel. A person whose character is steeled in titanium and reinforced with a stubbornness no man ever has had before. Now, he's standing before you naked, battered, and bruised. There's no way words -- real or made up -- could possibly describe the feelings that must be coursing through him.
The fact this comment is from machinegun makes it so much better
You also have to realize, this isn't the first time Wilson would've seen house broken like that. It has been said before that Wilson was the only reason House was able to get through the divorce with Stacy before the show started. Wilson was so worried about House, BECAUSE he's seen that look before.

The look on House’s face as he struggles to look Wilson in the eyes is some of the most impressive acting I’ve ever seen.
Such great acting from Cuddy here. 4:02 and 4:15. First you see the interest on her face, as she tilts her head to see what he's seeing but is confused when there's nothing. Then you see her shift into questioning if he is alright, before she even asks. Then there's 4:40. House drops his vicodin, stares at it horrfied. It disarms Cuddy and she immediately goes to see what's wrong with him.
Such a quick range of emotions in a minute or so.

I felt at the midpoint of this season the show was stalling a bit. But then the final few episodes and this happened. Bam.
This episode was so good that the series could actually end with it.

One of the dramatic high points of the series. The acting is just so spot on here, and Hugh Laurie was robbed of an Emmy so many times for this show. So. Many. Times. Also, the world needs more people like Wilson.

This gave me chills. My heart dropped when he took out the lipstick and it turned out to be Vicodin. The sequence that followed was terrorizing and perfectly captured what it means to *actually* be insane. It's scary as hell.
Great camerawork. The shakiness, the sudden cuts, the changes in color...
And the sound design, the sound that plays when he twists the lipstick is bone chilling!

@@ConsoleDaddy, Dead on target. He had already recognized the truth of what had happened, but seeing Kutner (far more than Amber, I think) was devastating to him (also, look at Kutner's expression). That broke House.
This powerful scene not only defined the show, but defined life as well. Addiction is real, the struggles are real, and the stories are real. Its easy to get addicted, harder to recover and stay clean. Well written by all involved and thank you House M.D !

SonicGlitchmaster1 well no shit, but eventually your body starts to become used to the pain medication and eventually you become dependent on it. Maybe not as much as they emphasize in House with how often you take, but still with how reliant you become on it
@@CLNCJD94 lul House's choice was never the drugs. It was whether or not to keep his leg, and despite everyone who cared about him telling him to get rid of the damn leg, he kept it. That's why he needs medication in the first place.

Its pretty obvious, for the first time in the series House looks genuinely terrified.
Moved me beyond words. Entire dialogue was without words. Everyone needs a friend like Wilson.
I had the same reaction to walking in on my friend trying to kill himself the feeling makes you wanna hug them it’s empathy that can save someone’s life

I think everybody already knows what's coming. He's been on hydrocodone for how many years now? The symptom should be obvious.
A confession. When I started watching House, I was in my medical school, never understood all the hard diseases he talked about, but I liked it. I was emotionally lost at the beginning of my medical school, never wanted to be a doctor honestly, I was depressed, impatient and rude. House changed me, it ignited me, helped me to gain the energy to stay in the fight. Fast forward 7 years, I completed my medical school, already have 2 post grad qualifications. I will start my training soon in the UK, and taking first part of my medicine speciality qualification in another 15days. I am here, watching these small clips, and I understood, how much was I emotionally attached with this series. We all have our own little stories, but when I look back, House would be my most fav series and these scenes right here, would be some of my most fav moments on Tv.

Same story. Almost done with my med school but I did really want to be a doctor and House M.D. helped me keep my enthusiasm for medicine always alive and my hunger for knowledge on top. Not only this, House as a character has shaped the way how I look and interact with people and my social surroundings. It's changed my perception regarding the tiny us in the whole, diverse universe, just like his own beliefs. It's helped me to become mature and most importantly, it's helped me to not pay attention towards things I thought were very significant in my life and I've learned are not so after all.
Notice how the shaky cam gets more and more intense until House comes to his realization? Great cinematic storytelling.

Without House saying a word, Wilson knew something was very, VERY wrong.
Forgive me if I don't remember the episode correctly but here's short breakdown:
In this episode House and Cuddy's relationship take a big swing downward and it all started with the flashback scene where House says I quit. The way House remembered it was that they made up and had sex, which is why he thought he had Cuddy's lipstick in his pocket. But while he talks to Cuddy in the present, he sees that it was just hallucinations. What he actually did was go home by himself and take more vicodin, enough to be throwing up in the toilet. As he reaches for his pocket, he opens his hand and sees his pill bottle, and not the lipstick, which confirmed everything.

Wilson had always been taking care of House. He was such a good friend, good partner. House did a great job when he left everything, so he could spend the last five months of his friend's life with Wilson. He kinda returned the favor. They both deserved each other. ❤️

MrTonyBarzini I disagree, they both were asses to each other in several occasions but that was part of their friendship, they explore that at the end of the episode "the social contract" and they say they're glad they don't have to walk on eggshells around each other
This entire segment is absolute TV perfection. The visuals, the creepy ambiance, the shakey close-ups, everything is incredibly well done.
The sad part is, Vicodin, and many other drugs, cause people to lose their grip on reality- especially if they also have mental health issues. Hugh's portrayal of a man going over the edge is pure genius.
This clip just makes me want to go up and hug Mr Schwartz. He seemed like such a nice, kind, older gentleman and he was just given world stopping news and was so distraught. I haven't ever watched House all the way through, which I intend to remedy very soon, and I don't remember having ever watched this particular episode. House *IS* the game.
The expression on his face at the end is like a scared lost child, it was heartbreaking to watch.
This scene has much more gravitas after watching House from the beginning. For him to simply use the words 'No, I'm not OK' is huge. He would never say that.
This moment is one of the key reasons I recommend people to watch House to this day. This moment (amongst others on the show) is so emotional - you can feel it, it denies the audience's expectation of a happy ever after where House gets Cuddy, it's one of the few times the 'it was all a hallucination/dream' trope is pulled off absolutely perfectly - there was good reason behind it, it was executed perfectly...
The writing, the acting from all party's - the directing, it's all pieced together for maximum and impact... and god to this day it still gives me shivers.
This was great but House’s Head/Wilson’s Heart was better.

Wilson, the true definition of a real friend.
This episode is so well written and acted. Using Eugene Schwartz as the trigger for House's unravelling is perfect. He fills the standard comic relief role that clinic patients often do, so when he goes from bozo to deathly afraid it sets off all the dominoes they lined up. Perfect.

As you go through a mental breakdown, your brain tries to reconfigure itself in a way that causes your subconsciousness to bleed into your consciousness. Any repressed issues you haven't fully explored and closed in reality, become a fantasy, like a oasis in a desert, you see what you want to see, in lieu of reality, which goes bye bye. House had far too much on his plate, thus his plate shattered once the events triggered his mind to become fractured.
Like steam valves, you have to address the pressure in your mind and soul. If you do not release the metaphorical steam valves, you know what happens once they explode.
Your perception on reality becomes a living dream, and in House's case, a nightmare come to reality.

I only gave them the option to explore House's mental instability in a way they can understand without complex psychological dissection. That would fly over 90% of the sites users.

The idea that you could literally be hallucinating your entire life and genuinely believe something that isn't real..that's terrifying...
Series could have ended here and I would have been completely satisfied.

5:55 This was an amazing scene. The rising tension with the soundtrack, and the pop at 6:05 at the instant he realized he lost it and remembered what actually happened. The tension was nailbiting and the awesome sound made it disturbingly intense.

House's breakdown has been a long time coming from the start. It took Amber's death and mostly Kutner's suicide to trigger it. The acting from all is extremely powerful.
When he overclocked his brain to find Amber was when it started to go _completely_ sideways.
And he only did that because Kutner ended himself _unexpectedly._

This was the peak of the entire show honestly. It didn't necessarily get _worse_ but they never topped this moment. It was so good it was almost disturbing.
I love that Wilson could see that something was badly wrong just from House's demeanour.
When I first watched this scene and Amber leaned into frame and whispered in House's ear it felt like someone slapped me in the face. Then Kutner appeared and it felt like a punch in the gut.

Phenomenal acting when he realizes he's going crazy and without even saying anything. His expression says it all
A very underrated moment is Wilson standing straight up when he sees House, a true friendship moment.
7:55 it's subtle and I'm not sure if it's me, but it seems Wilson nearly breaks down when he sees house leaving. He knew the pain house would endure, and my guess is that he hoped he would come out a better man despite it.
The writing on this show genuinely was surpassing it's own time and the time coming after

I was shocked when House lost his mind and started to hallucinate. I mean it's psychotic of how many times House has actually lost it. Though, I guess if this hadn't happened; we wouldn't have met Alvie.
Not just that, but Lin-Manuel Miranda wouldn't have been cast as him and the odds of us knowing that ball of sunshine would have decreased dramatically

This was an amazing ending to season 5. The past 4 episodes of him having severe symptoms of addiction and then his withdrawal leading to a light at the end of the tunnel at the beginning of this episode. Only to be crumbled by that plot twist. You can see why it won so many awards.
Just watched this episode and this ending almost broke me. Hugh Laurie is an amazing actor, the look on his face when he enters Wilson's room is terrifying. Dear god
