- Check out my review of the new Netflix documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop!
On January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history. The Greatest Night in Pop chronicles the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a world before cell phones and email.
That group of artists - led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century - Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie - came from different worlds but united to record “We Are the World.” Featuring never-before-seen footage, the film details the early planning stages, including the writing sessions with Richie and Jackson, and goes inside the famed Henson Studios where “We Are the World” was recorded.
Many of the artists who were there that legendary evening -- Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Smokey Robinson, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and Huey Lewis -- reminisce alongside musicians, engineers,
and production crew about one of the most storied nights in music history.
The Greatest Night in Pop was directed by Bao Nguyen and produced by Julia Nottingham, the team behind the acclaimed Bruce Lee documentary (Be Water).

Tait, the amount of screaming, hollering & talking back in agreement I did to you with this video!!! You were sooooooo on point with your review & research!!! Like you, I was so upset that there was gonna be a WATW remake & then was offended by the result! I couldn't believe what they did to it & that Lionel was actually cool with it! Wyclef's part made me wanna "Homey The Clown" his ass for the way he sang!!! Long time subscriber here brother, this was one of your best! Btw: am I the only one who watches your videos & makes the "swoosh" noise when you swing your head back to the camera after asking us to hit the notification button? Also, I can't be the only sub of yours that actually says "alright... plot time" with the hand gesture in real life when telling stories to people!!! Lol love your shit brother! ✊🏼I also gave this docu 2 thumbs up on Netflix, amazing. I'll never forget that night. That was also one of THE BEST AMAs ever! Shelia E. & those glow in the dark drumsticks!
Haha yo this comment made my day! True TaitsTaker right here. I’m humbled by this - THANK YOU 🙏
The documentary was so heartwarming. I’m Bob Dylan in any social situation.
I never knew he was that shy!
I honestly fell in love with Lionel Ritchie all over again watching this documentary. His contribution kept the night together.
Also, a big shout out to Stevie Wonder for keeping Bob Dylan together. I was watching the footage, and my anxiety rose in tandem with Dylan's. I was really worried for him.
As someone in my early 30s, I loved hearing the backstory of the song and seeing how difficult it was to execute. I cried too lol. It was beautifully made.
I loved every minute of this documentary. I loved Lionel’s stories of being at Michael’s writing, and the dog and the bird were fighting “bark, bark, bark. Shut up, shut up, shut up” and also the snake that showed up to say hello.
I really wish celebrities today would do something like this. ❤
Side note: Michael had the best part in the song and no back talk will be tolerated 😂
Not on my channel! They can take that talk to the tabloids :)
@@TaitsTake Ok I just watched it. Not Stevie Wonder ignoring phone calls for 3 weeks then coming in trying to bring Swahili. No sir 😂😂
Haha! @@kiam6218
Somehow i completely wiped WATW 2 from my memory
Would never happen
Mike wasnt mad. Probably annoyed be he had to know the night would be challenging. Teaching a song, leads, harmonies, etc to over 40 people in 1 night?? Quincy Jones, needs all kind of props producing this song. All the props
So glad to see you did a review on this. I'm a 53-year-old black woman and when I tell you I still ride around with CDs I made with the greatest hits of Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis and the News, Journey, Hall and Oates, etc. man in that era MTV was not playing Black people until Prince and Whitney and Michael broke the barrier so those pop or rock or whatever you want to call them vocalists that had real pipes were heavy in rotation in our community. One thing that I did learn watching that documentary was that Cyndi Lauper can sing. I never bought her album, I only heard her songs on the radio I did not realize she had pipes like that! The second thing that that documentary did was make me sad all over again about losing MJ because I was a kid when he was Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5 then I was there when he went out on his own as a kid singer before he blew up with the Off the Wall album. Seeing him waiting for everyone to arrive, by himself going over the vocals it just had me in my spririt, I cried.
That was a wonderful time to be alive and my biggest memory about We are The world is I was talking about it so much & so excited about it that I came home from school one day and my dad had the cassette for me. But it didn't look right, it didn't look like it came from the store so I asked him where he got it. Now remember this was the 80s, the era of crack-a-nomics. My Daddy told me he bought it from somebody ar basketball court 😒 I just burst out crying and said what about the hungry kids in Africa! 😂🤣
As someone who remembers because I'm old as you say. I will check this out. Steve Perry vocal game eats everytime! Great take. I look forward to crying at the end!
I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH HIS GAME!!!!!
@@TaitsTake don't stop believing gets the people going. But his solo jam _Oh Sherry_ ? Bless yourself. Might not be the genre you like but the chops be chopping on that cut!
Yep I'm also old and love some Steve Perry and Journey
@@TaitsTake Hey man, take another look, and you will see a tiny little second generation Azorean Portuguese American who grew up suffering from prejudice in the Hanford California area sandwiched between two big Anglo dudes. And they are always referred to as the "Three White Guys."
Also Springsteen and Cyndi’s voices were amazing..
Thank you for the review , fun as always.
Did you just call me old??? 🤔
You're right. Kenny, Darryl, and Steve did what they had to do! I went down the rabbit hole last year on Darryl's music because of this song lol!
Wow! I remember the excitement of hearing that song back in the day. Some of my favorite artists ... Tina, Jeffery, Stevie, Hall and Oates, Diana.❤
This doc is 1,000% nostalgia
Really cool moments: you can easily hear how much better Michaels vocals are compared to prerty much everone except for Steve Perry, had no idea his vocals were that good. Stevie telling Ray Charles he'll show him where the bathroom is, Diana Ross fan boying out and asking for John Oates autograph. Great stuff... really liked this documentary.
I literally watched your review and straight to Netflix. I thought I already knew everything about We are the world. It was so good. My favorite part was Stevie Wonder helping Bob Dylan with his solo
Great note and I’m SO happy you went to check it out!
Sir... you didn't warn me that I'd cry over and over... or maybe it's me... omg when they all sang DayO to Harry Belefonte! Diana Ross crying because she didn't want it to end! That was very moving! Thanks for the recommendation!
I kinda warned you! 😩
@@TaitsTake kinda
When you showed the clip of Wyclef singing i hollered 😂🤣🤣
“Prince was being Prince” 😂
Lol o well he missed out on one of the greatest songs and moments ever. I bet he regretted it. Love prince though
He had a weired ego that I can't still understand up to this day...
This doc is really good. I'm an 80s baby, so it was cool to see all these artists that I still listen to, collaborate. Chris, on Showtime, they did a doc celebrating Thriller.
Steve Perry had one of the best voices in rock at the time.
Bob Dylan is a dang great song WRITER... but as A SINGER...especially, when you put him in the midst of all those mega black singer super stars...Bob knew his limitations. He's humble enough to admit he's not really a vocalist.
i truly appreciate that whole Bob moment...him, BOB friggin' DYLAN feeling rather out of place and even insecure around Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Billy Joel, The Boss..Steve Perry..Cyndi Lauper...ALL ace vocalists.
This
I’m glad that you, at least, recognise Band Aid which was released prior to WATW. Sir Paul McCartney (who didn’t sing but just rocked up to play bass!!), George Michael, Bono, David Bowie & Freddie Mercury plus pretty much every other British band/singer. Oh, and it led to Live Aid.
For sure. I am a student of the game. I guess some other reviewers weren’t mentioning it.
LOL why didn't I know we are the world 2 existed ???? Loll omg I am screaming. This was great tho. And I guess the documentary was okay too. Lol. But no seriously the documentary is everything. My God the greatness, the rich history being made. Whew !
I’m sorry I had to take y’all there!
I understand. The documentary made me emotional as well.
When Cyndi realized she had too many bling and that was the reason for the backgound noise, pure gold. Also, Diane Ross when she said she didn't want it to be over. I loved every bit of this documentary. ❤
Thanks for highlighting this movie. i would have missed it without you. My husband and I are 60 we really enjoyed it.
Just watched this. Absolutely incredible and emotional. I remember singing this every Friday in elementary school. I got so teary watching this ❤
My family had the making of We Are The World VHS tape! 🌍 Ps, love your tshirt 😄
Haha you noticed that, eh!? Thank you!
I almost cried at the end too 🥲. You know I love a good doc especially a music doc. This footage was toooo good!! And I appreciate Lionel’s anecdotes. 5 ⭐️
You peeped that kick back with Mike, Lionel and Dionne???
What I found hysterical was Mike trying to disappear into the wall at one point when some of the others were rehearsing lol. If only I could be a thought bubble in his head. ALSO loved when they sang “dayyy-O” and Stevie had the remix with hysterical lyrics. So many little fun moments
@@KrucialKelz516 day o went crazy. Stevie was bugginnnnn “DO THEY EVEN SPEAK SWAHILI?!” Then Mike tryna smooth it out. Smokey said. Mike. We ain’t doing that shit. “I known Mike since he was 10 years old I can talk to him like that” 😂😂
😂😂😂 toooo good!
I loved it! It brought tears to my eyes. We are in such a divisive place right now. We need to come together. That said
, Waylon Jennings wasn’t singing no Swahili 😝
🤣
We sang this song in choir when I was in middle school (85?) and I had a solo. I’ll definitely be watching and reminiscing. ❤
You killed the solo? 👀
I watched Greatest Night because of your review and loved it! I really hope more people find it. I know it is No. 1 on Netflix but I don’t see enough people talking about it on social media (and I know social media doesn’t necessarily reflect real life)
Anyway, always enjoy your reviews, which are funny as well as informative. Keep up the good work!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Yessss I’m so proud! I want everyone to watch this. Thank you so much :)
Great review. I knew the song, video, and I work in aid in Africa so have a lot of thoughts. But mostly, I was just so impressed by the humanity on display in that room. So heartwarming! ❤
Thank you for the work you’re doing 🙏🙏
Omg I forgot about that disastrous we are the world remake 😂😂😂
That’s cuz we don’t talk about that. I broke the rules 🤫
I just watched. It was amazing and I definitely cried at the end.
Al Jarreau and Bob Dylan cracked me up!!
The coordination and planning is something our government could definitely use. The unity of different artist despite different races was good to see that there was no racism. Michael Jackson’s version is my favorite and I know he had something in mind and the African part he incorporated was actually good, it wasn’t over the top like Stevie Wonders swahili part. Overall great film, and it was good to see artist come together in unity.
I think some dude walked out at that poy, saying no good boy says stuff like that 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ why not just stay and suggest to not do that?
That money might still be in Wyclef bank account😂😂😂😭😭😭
This documentary was SO GOOD!! I came to your channel to see if you had the latest Bachelor recap and stayed for all your other reviews, including this one which sent me straight to Netflix. I'm not saying I blame you for getting to bed at 2:30am... 😀😂🥰 It was so well done! As a kid in the 80s I was there, but never saw all this BTS and how it all came together. That part with Bob Dylan being so vulnerable, couldn't get the song out until... (no spoilers) see the film people! Thanks, Chris! And I'm so happy for you with the success of your channel. You rock!
I don’t watch the bachelor lol but maybe I should. So honored to take the 2:30 bedtime blame!
Haha! Yes, I think it would be good to add to your reviews. There may be a lot of bachelor recappers out there but there are so few great ones IMO. It's not too late to get in on this season. We're only 2 episodes in. This bachelor is very nice too. He seems like a standup guy. I like it so far. :) @@TaitsTake
I loved your Prince rant at the end 😂
You know an MJ stan when you see one 🤭
Just watched. Outstanding!
I’m 63, We Are The World was one of the greatest things in music history, and I knew if they ever did it again , it would never be the same. That’s why to this day, I have never seen WATW 2…
Thank you for your research on this! I loved this documentary!
Thank you for the nice note!!
I love MJ! Thanks Tait. I was debating whether or not to watch. It sounds good. Wyclef😂, why…lol. It’s so sad that Prince wouldn’t. I wonder if he had regrets. Anyway, I’m definitely watching this weekend, all those legends and vocals.
Thanks for this -- I remember We are the World -- I will be watching tonight.
*Great review vid...*
*... Just became your newest Sub...!!!* 👍🏽 👍🏽 👍🏽
Hello new friend!!!
That was the most amazing song at the time. It has lasted the test of time. Ugh, Prince being Prince... still a genius.
Lmao definitely a genius…but also Prince being fucking Prince
I believe your audience demographic is older than you thought it was 😂
I think I’m a little older than I thought I was 👀
Thank you for shouting out Steve Perry - thee Voice, my favorite ever.💜🎶🖤
Chris, watched the other night; what a gift!!!!
Great, great doc! We’re lucky to be able to see all that footage!
Enjoyed your video very much (it's both a great summary as well as a comprehensive review), and I subbed as soon as I heard "this channel is a glorified Michael Jackson fan page." Looking forward to exploring your other content! Thank you.
I remember watching the hbo tape of the making of we are the world on dvd during long road trips a kid! Fun times
I came here only because of Michael Jackson and stayed because of Tait ❤ #bigfanofthesecretMJfanpage
King. 👑
Did you know MJ insisted he be filmed from the feet up? He wanted to be set apart and wanted us to recognize him by his socks.
Lmao and then he said, “film Bruce Springsteen from the feet up, see if anyone knows it’s him”
He really said that ? 😂😂😭😭
I loved the documentary.....❤ I got teary eyed at the end...
I saw a clip of snoop dogg talking about him being at “WATW2” hilarious, lil Justin Bieber ran up to him talking about “hey uncle snoop” they snatched him up so fast and put him next to Bruce springsteen😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 and then freakin nipsey hussle walked and an stood in the corner somewhere knowin he wasn’t suppose to be in there😂😂
Nipsey was in there like what am I doing here?
Great video. I remember when We are the world came out. ( yes I’m old). I had no idea about We are the world 2.
Lmao nah nah you young! We young.
I saw this on my movie list and had no idea what it was, I will be watching later today. Thanks 🎉🎉
PLEASE DO! And report back
@@TaitsTake Oh my goodness, I can not thank you enough for the review!!! From the beginning seeing Harry Belfonte in Kraken's office and getting the ball rolling to the end...pure emotion. The Lord puts you were you need to be, just think had Stevie Wonder answered Lionel Ritchie's call we may have never had this song. He and Michael chilling and hanging out thinking they had time until Quincy showed up and said , " I need the song, we're on awards night". Then they deliver, he loves it. They lay the track and send it out to all the artists. Bruce Springsteen, who never flys after a tour, flew out of a snow storm in Buffalo. Dionne who said she was going to be in Vegas, flew in. Seeing my beloved Kenny Roger's drive himself to the studio...joy.
I cried listening to Michael singing alone while everyone was at the awards, deferring to Quincy, "do I say you & I or you & me? " I cried when Ray Charles played it as a gospel song. Watching the Motown crowd sitting on the risers ..Bob Dylan saying ,"Stevie, play it for me?" And Stevie playing it and mimicking Bob's voice just to help him find his comfort...it was beautiful. Dionne, Willie (f' ing) Nelson and AL Jureau , Darryl, Steve & Kenny Loggins ....genius trios.
I laughed when Waylon Jenning walked out, a true "good Ole boy". Smoky asking what did ching a Ling mean? And he and Ray cracking up at MJ. The best Ray says he has to to the bathroom and Stevie says "I'll show you" , them hand on arm, and someone says, " truly the blind leading the blind" I can hear the legends laughing.
I cried again when they said Diana Ross cried and said she didn't want that night to end. Remembering the day and time it premiered and as the say music can heal, we really felt as one. Enjoy coming home because there will come a time when you can't go home. The house will be there but the people won't. And then reading the names of everyone no longer here.
Bob Geldorf, I thank you for inspired words and actions.
So,so good. Perfection, any more voices or any less and it would have been a totally different gift to the world. As much as I love Prince, I understand that he spoke mostly with his guitar and crowds were not in thing. Rest in power. 💐💐🌷🌷💐💐
FYI, the BandAid song, Feed the World, my daughter grew up singing at at Christmas like it was a regular Christmas carol, it is still powerful.
Kenny logins sang footloose..Darryl Hall is in Hall and Oats. Steve Perry sang Oh Sherry and is lead singer of
Journey during 80s. Thanks for this review. Gonna watch it now. So excited to re-live this historical music masterpiece
Thanks so much for this note! I’m glad you’re planning on checking the doc out.
@@TaitsTake ❤️
Why that RIP? Kenny Loggins is pretty much alive!
@@robertocaesar thank you. U are absolutely correct..my bad. Was too irie when I wrote post. 😳Will edit correct 👍
Michael Jackson's part was the best in WATW. Most people think of him when this incredible song is mentioned despite there being more than 40 other artists in it.
Always loved that song
I love your reviews.. they are hilarious 😂.. I'd love to see your take on this new Netflix show called "The trust"
Such a great review !! I really enjoyed this show, and enjoyed so much watching all those great singers !! The part with Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder is memorable !! Oh and by the way I am a huge fan of Michael Jackson, and loved this video at 3:20 min
16:37 I did cry 😭
You not supposed to watch until the end 😩
I did too.
It was soo good i stood a foot away from the screen. I think i was in the room
Actually. Stood right next to cindy's jinggle jangles lol
The boss. Cindy. Everyone even how we got to Dylan's part was soo satisfying. I woulda been cryin right next to Diana Ross too. It was beautiful... cant forget the king. mJ. Anybody else catch that prince was supposed to be after MJ 🤔
Lol CL jingles was HILARIOUS!
Lol
Hand across America from being old here. 😂😂😂
These artists are too professional to be mad 😂 we saw what happened. It was a tough night to all of them. Even MJ and Quincy had a tough time explaining everything to them. Battle of egos they say.
Awww ok now I HAVE to watch it!!!😊
And then you gotta report back.
New subbie! I liked the documentary. Honestly I don't think the Haiti relief version was that bad. (ducks from tomatoes)😂 At least Celine Dion's version trumps (🙄) Cyndi Lauper's. 😂 And how Lil Wayne was worse than Dylan?😂 Interestingly enough, they scrapped the Swahili bit but had Haitian Creole for the Haiti relief version.
Oh man the "favorite black male" thing had me 💀 Like WTF!
Hey new subbie!! Thank youuuuuu
I remembered when it was recorded ❤yes I am showing my age! And It’s true about Prince true. Great video
Thank you for watching! Prince always gonna Prince.
@@TaitsTake facts he consistently did that and be shady boots 😂
Love your review and details shared from your consistently impressive research. This Golden Gyal believes legends never die - they live on through their music, so keep those 80’s tunes on replay. The remake sucked and I wonder if they raised any funds after releasing the single 😂
Love this comment - thank you, cuz! The research is the fun part….but even with all that research…I could NOT find out how much WATW Haiti made 👀
It was great wish it was longer also there is a We are the World documentary here on TH-cam
I have a crush on you Tait! The End 😂
🤭
Kenny Loggins is the man. Didn’t Redman let us know back in the day? Also, I can’t even listen to Journey if Steve Perry isn’t singing lead. ☺️
Bob Dylan is me literally...
I was driving to work that morning when the song came on every radio station at the same time. I think it was at 8:45 a.m and my shift started at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific Time).
Thanks! Looking forward to seeing this.
Hi Chris, As always, fine job....Sorry you missed...80's...Journey = Steve Perry... Loggins & Messina = Kenny loggins and Hall & Oates = Daryl Hall. What about Huey Lewis? I saw a review of the Doc over weekend. Reviewer mentioned that Huey Lewis sang Pince's part... I have not watched it yet...But that may very well something that came of the documentary. I enjoy and appreciate your work...
Always a gift to hear you, Uncle Sonny! Proud to know you’re enjoying the content 🙏 love to the family from me.
It was brilliant the way they had Bob Geldof set the tone for the evening One of my brothers went there with Doctors Without Borders
I almost cried to glad to know I'm not alone
😢when they said Diana cried and said she didn’t want it to end
Tait, excellent review. Now I will watch the netflix show.

Omg the 2010 We are the World sums up what’s happened to music .
Such a good doc
Enjoyed your video, however when you said has anyone heard-We Are the World- I mean it is in pop culture so they would of been brought up on a desert island lol
We are the world 2 was crazy 😂
The Bridge People (Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes) is the best part of the song! ❤
Bob Geldof was MVP for blocking Stevie Wonder's Swahili Lyrics.
Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles laughing together ❤
Al Jarreau was lit up
🤣😂😂🤣 I did not know about the reboot
Sorry I had to take you there 😬
It was so good!
5:05 😄😄😄😂😂omg I thought the same thing. Like so offensive and rude.
Such a strange time! No one thought it was crazy there wasn’t white and brown and yellow awards?!
There were wrong for using Shelia E to get Prince. DEAD wrong. I honestly don't think Prince would've been a good fit anyway because of his ego. They would've never got anything done. They were struggling a bit with who they had already. Also, it shouldn't have been an exact remake, but they should've actually wrote a who new song. smh
yeah, you seem like you are emotional over a lot of things(No Shade), yeah we all knew Daryl hall can sing. if you can look up some of his songs .. Oh yeah George Michael as well( All That she wants , for example). As always great commentary.
George Michael was the truth!!!
Maybe do be getting emotional a lot. My sister would never believe you tho.
@@TaitsTake Seems like it takes a lot for you to hold in your emotions.
There is a making of this song on TH-cam. You don't need to watch Netflix to see it.
Am I completely lost? I thought the “We are the world” was about AIDS, not Africa. I am 45 and was a kid at the time, but that’s how I remember it
Nope but close…it was about famine in Africa.
