Never attach your safety chains to the same place that you connect your J hooks to. If that axle came loose or some one hit the towed vehicle and you have them both at the same spot you will loose that vehicle. J hooks on axle safety chains on frame or another secure point seperate from the primary load chains. Don't like or trust those skimpy repo units. The sling was to flat and would ride up the straps even in a mild fast stop. Straps should be vertical as much as possible to stop the towed vehicle from riding up them.

The sling tow unit was state-of-the-art until the early 1980's. Like anything, the operator learns to tow a whole variety of different cars.
Perhaps the most difficult I ever hooked up to was a Citroen DS that belonged to a famous actor. It had a very long undertray made of aluminum. May have been the only time I had to use the old TA105 attachment.
That was quite a challenge. Of course, done without damage to the car!

Cross the hook up chains on the sling and they won't scratch the bumper.Putting the sling that far and creates a launch ramp, keep the cross bar at the bumper and use wood.J hooks up or down doesn't matter if brake lines aren't in the way

Being a former tow truck driver from So Calif who first learned on a sling in 83, Use a real tow truck and not a repo truck because the sling sits different on a wheel lift compared to a repo truck, I could go on and on but someone needs to learn how to sling with the correct type of sling truck....

If you cross the safety chains so they hook up on opposite sides of each vehicle and use one on each side you will keep them from binding up because of lack of slack easier and if the vehicle being towed should have a situation where the safety chain becomes necessary to keep control of the vehicle having them crossed will control the towed vehicle better while puling to the side and coming to a stop.

i don't think my customers would like a plastic bumper deep scratched by a chain. WHEN i chain/sling lift a truck i use a 4X4 timer under the chains so i dont scratch the bumper & slide a chunk of rubber mat behind the chain for added protection. Damage = LESS $$ for my business. They ALSO just bought the J hook chains for $46.95 each

I thought i was the only one who used the safety loop with J hooks . I still operate a sling here and there for larger SUV / Truck applications , but can be difficult on lower slung cars .... I carry 2 different pieces of wood on my truck - a 6X6 , and a 4X4 about 4-4.5 feet long to place between the sling chains and the chassis/undercarriage of the towed vehicle - keeps from folding & damaging plastic bumpers.Believe it! if you are good with the placement-Corvettes can be slung from rear !

Yes you´re right, in my opinion the sling it´s just for wrecked vehicles, the sling would be the only way to tow 50 years ago, but today there are a other metods like tow dollyes, wheel lifts and rollbacks which can tow vehicles damage free

With the advances in towing technology, why would you even want to sling a vehicle? The pick up truck is too light for this equipment, the Chevy Avalanche weighs at least 5000 lbs is four wheel drive, towing with the sling could damage the transmission, at least with a rollback, you won' t run the risk of damaging the Avalanche's drivetrain or if you select to use a wrecker, use wheel lift and dollies for either set of wheels on the ground, besides, since newer vehicles are lighter, you can cause a lot of damage if you use a sling.

I'm sorry but that is the worst example of using a sling that I have ever seen, For one when you wrap your chain on the bottom hook of the slain and bring it up to the top hook of the sling it is not supposed to be as tight as the rubber sling it is just there as a safety precaution if the rubber tears I would much rather prefer and I'm sure customers due to have the rubber up against my bumper then the chain itself digging into the bumper, And after you give it a love tug the sling should be on a up-and-down angle not a horizontal angle because when you hit the brakes hard in emergency it will slide read across that horizontal rubber Sling, If it was vertical it will push up against the sling and stop it along with the arms from slamming into the back of your tow rig, That example in the video with an emergency braking on a heavy load that truck is gonna come rate offer that set up and I would love to take it in a parking lot in demonstrate how you'll load will fall right off, And furthermore your safety chains are way too tight You're not gonna be able the turn out of the parking lot without ripping one of them hooks off the bed I think with all the experience you guys have in building The units your design could have been a little better especially for the price I have used other units Half the costThat have worked flawlessly actually have a telescoping boom winch mounts tail gate closing option and have lifted 12000 lbs, Sorry but I expected more out of this company, You can hate me for my comment but I whole 3000 cars a year, And my 550 still has a sling option because nothing tows better Then a sling when you put 14000 pound on the back of A550

If you don't cross the safety chains the weight (should there be a failure on the primary hook-up) doesn't get evenly distributed on both chains, chain breaks, people die.
    Just sayin...

    • @danfarris135

That only applies to trailer tongues. You cross the safety chains to keep the tongue from dropping to the ground and digging in and losing control of the trailer. A vehicle with a square / perpendicular bumper plane to safety chain orientation can not fall between the chains, so no you don’t crisscross the chains.
