I was mesmerized by this film 53 years ago. I watched it on a small tv and recorded the soundtrack on a tinny recorder. I tried to reproduce some scenes in Super-8, using an optical printer donated to our state college Film Dep't. That led me to Film School, the discovery of Vilmos Zsigmond, and a Masters in Cinematography. I recently learned more of the composer, Bruce Langhorne, and looked up the movie. Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, and Verna Bloom are brilliant. 53 years later ... this is a masterpiece.
Totally agree. Never seen this one. This is what Hollywood should be about. Good , Bad, humans making mistakes and working through it. Now it mainly political. What ever politics touches it destroys.
I've seen this film several times over the years. I saw Easy Rider in 1971. I followed Peter and Dennis Hopper's careers, ups, and downs. I think this is the best work Peter Fonda ever did. There is simply no other Western quite like this one.
Warren Oates was Peter Fondas best friend. When Warren died of a heart attack I think around 1983. Fonda was in the Phillipines making a film. Sadly Peter missed Warrens funeral. But Warrens family called Peter and asked him to come back for the reading of the will. So Peter flies back bleary eyed and goes to the Attorney s office. At the very end of the will Warren wrote Peter with all the money you made off of Easy Rider you don’t need any more. “So to Peter Fonda I leave ALL MY LOVE””.
❤❤❤❤❤ love this I love the cowboy way of talking!!!I see warren was true to it!!!!he goes up on my favorite cowboys, with that move!!!!!💯❤ Thanks for sharing
So, he had to stop everyone’s job of filming because of his demand to fly back for the reading of the Will, plus upsetting his time change as he was forced to adjust……frankly, the attorney ought to have been lenient and either delay the reading, or tell him over the phone. I don’t think much of his being forced to go thru this emotional turmoil especially after losing his best BFF.
This movie is unpredictable in many aspects. Yet, it is satisfying in many ways. Warren Oats, per his usual, while still alive, is one of the best actors in all of his designated roles. He knew his limitations and never strived to be Sir Laurence Olivier or Marlon Brando. He was always himself, and all characters he obviously enjoyed being, he nailed them.
I just watched this movie for the first time tonight. Wouldn't have heard of it if not for Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary's podcast. The final shot of this film is one of the most heartbreaking and devastating endings I've ever seen. Perfection.
This is cool! Wow! This was filmed in New Mexico. I recognized Cabazon Peak because its right on the way to my grandparents ranch. Those adobe buildings dont exist anymore. Now when i pass this peak and San Luis. Ill think of this movie.
Great movie. Great cinematography. Well written and directed. Peter Fonda, Warren Oates and Verna Bloom portrayed friendship, loyalty and love in this moving story.
Always admired Warren Oates Peter Fonda walks just like his Dad,”HENRY”. Peter Fonda as to the movies that he has acted in Seems to be a little like CLINT EASTWOOD, quiet and the soundtrack is kind of similar Not sure of writers or photography of scenes but they are wonderful They are surely admired. Thank you
This is an unusual kind of Western movie. It looks so real and serious. Very natural acting and devoid of any exaggeration. Was difficult to guess how it would end.
I wrote an essay about Peter Fonda's mystical, poetic masterpiece and interviewed assistant director Hawk Koch for its 50th anniversary in 2021 on Senses of Cinema. This is in my top 10 in the Sight & Sound Greatest Films of All Time poll. My favorite American film. Filmed in New Mexico. Beautiful, gorgeous, shimmering landscape cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond and an aching, deeply hypnotic score by Bruce Langhorne. My favorite soundtrack.
How refreshing to see an actress play a role without the need for heavy make-up as most western themed movies do. Well directed and played by all, most enjoyable.
Horrible and realistic at the same time! Life is indeed this way. I would have chose my wife however hard the decision was though. I would have also rode in at night and catch the bastards off guard! Tactics people!! Tactics!!
THANK YOU , IT WAS NICE TO SEE A GOOD WESTERN THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN 20 TIMES BEFORE , THIS MOVIE WAS WELL DONE I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH THANKS AGAIN / I HOPE TO SEE SOME MORE GOOD WESTERNS BEFORE JESUS CALLS US FOR THE BIG ROUND-UP IN THE SKY / KEEP THE FAITH JESUS SAVES
this just might be the best movie ever made, especially when you think about the use of dissolves to a super-max use that i ever saw in a movie period.
This movie is impressive in every way! Wow. I wanted the end of the movie to be shown the happy way I wanted. The ending was left for me too dream of the possible conclusion
You never saw National Lampoon? Wow! Are you in for a treat! I have never seen the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre even though I have the ultimate Blue ray disc. Gonna watch it one day, just not yet
the Hired Hand. (Western,1971). Starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, Verna Bloom, Megan Denver, Severn Darden, Larry Hagman, Robert Pratt, Ted Markland, & Ann Doran, Also Starring Gray Johnson, Owen Orr, Rita Rogers, Al Hopson, Michael McClure, Lawrence G. Paull, Richard Bruno, Frank Griffin, & Marshall Schlom.
Thank you for uploading these types of movies. I thought I'd like this western since it wasn't shot in the desert like 90% of westerns but honestly I wasn't impressed with the story. The sound track was nice.
Filmed in New Mexico. The ghost town and mountain peak are Cabezon at the beginning where Dan dies and at the end where Harry dies, the sunset horse ride in the Rio Puerco valley, the desert scenes in White Sands, the forest and monsoon rain scenes in Chama, the family home in Española.
Why would you bury his gun with him? 21:00? That's a valuable piece of equipment. Like leaving guns or ammunition behind. Maybe like the Russian soldiers in Ukraine?

This is arguably one of the best westerns ever made. The music, photography, dialog and acting are all superb. Bravo!!
This is another great old classic: th-cam.com/video/ssLd5IVHfkc/w-d-xo.html
Totally agree. Never seen this one. This is what Hollywood should be about. Good , Bad, humans making mistakes and working through it. Now it mainly political. What ever politics touches it destroys.
Found this because of my love of the playing of Bruce Langhorne. What a rush to find Warren Oates and the camera work of Vilmos Zsigmond.

96 in the shade was pretty damn good too with Peter and warren....
I had no idea a western could be this way too. Great acting, great music, great story, great dialog & great sets. Everything about the movie's great.

It leaves us feeling as would combining 'Days of Heaven' and 'Bridges of Madison County' in a double feature bill.
This movie is a gem. It is so sad and beautiful.
Yeah.
The irony of it all. True friendship is what it is and there is nothing more to be said. Thanks for uploading.

One word: Absolutely!
Yours first two sentences speaks a lot and at the same time , leaves a lot. Depends who understands what. ✍️🙏
@peace love ,
A bit '70's artsy fartsy, but not bad. Watchable.
@peace love thanks fellow deadhead.

This was a slow moving western with a sad ending. Thanks for sharing.
Love this movie. Saw it many years ago. Understated and one of the best Westerns.

I love this movie everytime i watched it. I
That was more psychology lesson than it was a western. But a great story, acting, setting, and cinematography (and more) made this a memorable movie.
Always admired Warren Oates
Peter Fonda walks just like his Dad,”HENRY”.
Peter Fonda as to the movies that he has acted in
Seems to be a little like CLINT EASTWOOD, quiet and the soundtrack is kind of similar

Epic.
How I miss this sort of westerns, ....
This movie was well created. One of a kind 👍
The soundtrack is exemplary and the cinematography is on the same plane. So far at twenty-seven minutes in I'm liking this western.

Agree with you ,but did working class country folf women and children have gold studs in their ears in that period ?
Women ear-accessories is an ancient tradition. I'm sure it was common then too.
Verna Bloom was especially good in this film and in the 1969 movie Medium Cool
BEST FILM EVER
Dang good movie ty

All his movies are really slow.
Easy Rider 👍
We could have gotten along.
Thank you awesome movie
the soundtrack is divine
Bravo bravo 👏 👉5 ⭐🤠
I figured the ending about halfway through, but didn't know how it would come around, which made this a very enjoyable movie to watch.
What a movie! Love it!
Really like the style of photography….. nice storyline. He should of waited to nitefall to make his move to save his buddy…. Also great music….
The exact thought I was thinking as he rode off in the bright sun. ;)
there're dream like zoom effects
ONE OF THE BEST.
Can't beat 35mm film...
An entertaining movie - well worth watching - some sadness, but 'such is life'.
He chose the life of his friend over the desires of his wife whom he abandoned twice. Right or wrong it was a heartbroken movie
Yo the soundtrack is insane
Really ? Sorry you felt this way. I enjoyed it, myself.

Great movie! At first I wasn't sure, but turned out very good. Except the ending I suppose.
Great story!!😊
Great soundtrack
It's not a movie about what you expect. It is a movie about what you hope will happen. Just wait for the truth to be told.

Super super super music 🎵
Good drama. Just only in the western background. Slow moving , but is good.
Great Movie🔥👌
This movie is impressive in every way! Wow. I wanted the end of the movie to be shown the happy way I wanted. The ending was left for me too dream of the possible conclusion
Hardly a "Western" movie except for the period and location. But, a good movie just the same.
After enjoying the heck out of this, I certainly fail to comprehend a less than positive review, and for instance one by Rodger Ebert.
oh yeah ive been waiting for this. youtube nation, what it dew?
An excellent new movie, 😔 but worth watching. 👋☦🕊❤
i like a movie that has meaning like the old black & white

This scene of the reprisal murder was one of the best [realistic] ever although we all know it was a robbery !
Sad movie!!!
This film has a very sad ending..
Apart from High Plains Drifter, and After Hours , this is the only film i have seen Verna Bloom in
She was the Dean's cougar wife in Animal House
You never saw National Lampoon? Wow! Are you in for a treat!
I have never seen the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre even though I have the ultimate Blue ray disc. Gonna watch it one day, just not yet

Bitter sad story, With a even deeper sad fact of life.. about being a Hired Hand...
Significant that Arch came back riding Harry,s horse instead of leading it
About as entertaining as waiting for a bus!
when you got to shoot, shoot, don't talk .
Isn't that line from Tuco in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly at the end of the bath tub scene?

@ Roger Temple who was the Mexican cantina lady? Stunningly beautiful but I do not know her name did she get a credit in the movie?

Thank you for uploading these types of movies. I thought I'd like this western since it wasn't shot in the desert like 90% of westerns but honestly I wasn't impressed with the story. The sound track was nice.

Warren Oates was funny in two lane blacktop
That was not a Bible quote @22:52. That was something out of an apocryphe gospel.
The gospel of Thomas i think.
Why would you bury his gun with him? 21:00? That's a valuable piece of equipment.
Like leaving guns or ammunition behind.
Maybe like the Russian soldiers in Ukraine?
