great Western movie..,,,how the West, must have been for some people, mistaken for Outlaws and hanged by the do-gooders...a harsh time in American History...well written,,Jack Nicholsen
This is certainly no major film, but nice to watch on a slow morning when one is an ancient man. Simplistic plot, but pretty good acting. Thanks for showing it.
He didn't make a dent in that stump in 2 or 3 days, so I was wondering how long it took him to chop the logs and build that cabin? I did like the movie.
Written and produced by Nicholson, I saw this as a minimalist Western with an existential treatment like Nicholson's early film "Five Easy Pieces". Reliance on the faded landscape and horses and people of few words living hard lives. Nothing glorious about any of this. Those two women were left without their father/husband and their only two horses stolen as the vigilantes came through and left them. The innocent cowboy Nicholson ended up as a killer and horse thief on the run after losing his two friends who rides off into dust...yes, it was a whirlwind of several days that changed everything for him.
Thank you, a good movie. Harry Dean Stanton who played the gang leader, with the eye patch. Was also in another good western with Jack Nicolson and Marlon Brando. The Missouri Breaks, filmed in Montana. Definitely worth watching.
I love the way this movie ended with just the survivor and his galloping horse as the sound of the horse just fades away. The ending is left to your imagination.

If you like Jack Nicholson in a Western, check-out "The Missouri Breaks," also starring Marlon Brando, and Harry Dean Stanton, who was in THIS one.
Good performances from some very experienced actors give this film a purpose. As Jack Nicholson had yet to prove himself at this time I think.
WOW : Director: Monte Hellman
Writer: Jack Nicholson
Hellman went on to do TWO-LANE BLACKTOP.

This is why they outlawed vigilante posses .
