    A British 'Japanese' RPG otherwise known as a BJRPG.

    This was and still is one of my favorite Xbox games. I agree 100% with everything you mentioned, there could've been more to it, sad this is all we got. I really wanted a sequel and still do, heck I'd welcome a remake too, this game deserves it. I at least have the original soundtrack CD which is quite a gem. 😊

      To me they are completely separate. I love Jade empire so much and disliked sudeki quite a lot. But one thing I saw is that it had a lot of good ideas that were not developed

    I absolutely adore this game. I first heard of it when I was looking at an Xbox magazine that had a demo disk. The cover on the disk box was primarily promoting Sudeki and I was absolutely enthralled. Bought it, brought it home, and played that demo over and over and over again. My 13 year old mind was blown. I loved the character colouring, the enemy designs, and especially the soundtrack. I asked reaaaal hard to get this game for Christmas, and lo! I did indeed open it Christmas morning of 2004.
    I played it and played it and played it. I loved the colour palate, building and weapon designs, and the music so much that exploring every nook and cranny of Sudeki was an absolute treat. I basically spent all of my year as a 14 year old living in the game.
    I drew so much fan art, made so many little backstories for the places and characters, and even did a little fanfic writing. Everything I drew for the next couple years all ended up with breastplates like Ailish's 😅
    A couple decades later, I realllly seldom play the game. Maybe I'd give it a whirl or two if I get a Steamdeck. I've sunk thousands of hours into other games in my time since and as such, I spend very little time thinking about Sudeki these days. But. Every now and again, I have a dream where I'm running around playing the game and all of a sudden I find a cave I missed, or a pathway I somehow never saw before, and I find a whoooole bunch more gameplay. The game gets its proper ending, there's new lands to explore, and new enemies to defeat.
    Ok so like, can everyone just petition to get Mr Beast fund making a proper sequel? Lol I wish

      I appreciate your nostalgia for this game. However as someone who just played through it for the first time, it did not age well at all even compared to other similar games of the time. By the end of the game I was basically begging for it to be over lol
      I’m glad you enjoy it tho.

    When this game released I had just moved in with my dad and was in my first year of trade school. We lived outside the city in a furnished basement apartment and because my dad travelled for work a lot he wasn't usually around. Because of that dad wouldn't commit to getting internet or even a telephone line. If I needed to make a call to a friend I used to have to use his old work cell phone after walking down the highway 5 minutes to get a signal. So all I really had for fun was my old ass P3 computer and my xbox. Thankfully I had the vga adaptor for the xbox so I got away with just having a CRT monitor in my room, a 19' one at that. But this game took up literally my entire summer. I liked it so much that I learned how to rip the audio and convert it so I could piece together road to new brightwater and the main brightwater town music just so I could put them on an MP3 cd on my discman.

    This is a weird one for me. I have this game and have had it for a very long time but I don't remember when I bought it lol. I assume I bought it used because there's no manual in the case but I don't think I ever played it (which honestly would be par for the course for me lol). It looks interesting though and definitely looks like it had potential. Unfortunately it looks like another game that suffered from Microsoft's impatience in the early days. The OG Xbox had so many new first party studios that the closed down because their first game wasn't a smash hit. Had they given these studios the time to develop then Xbox would have a HUGE first party stable of developers that they would've curated themselves, as opposed to needing to spend hundreds of billions of dollars buying publishers and developers.

    • @campxbox
      @campxbox  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I agree with your sentiment. Going through these games individually made me discover how many studios shut down after their first exclusive game on the original Xbox. This team could have made something neat after this one, but it never got a chance. The rush to get some games out hurt Xbox much later.

    • @vailismyname
      @vailismyname 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a shame about the missing manual. This came out riiight at the end of when manuals looked cool and had lore in them. I spent hours looking at the manual to memorize character designs for fan art, and also generally just to get hyped to play.

    Never understood why this game never became backwards-compatible om the newer Xbox console. It's a solid enough game worth preserving. For all intents & purposes, Microsoft owns the publishing rights thus shouldn't have been an issue.

    @3dmarth 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Those shadows are seriously impressive for the time!
    Actually, they're still impressive now, as even some modern games using a similar technique are skimping on shadow resolution, making them look blurry at all but the very closest range.
    Everything casting shadows on everything was, for me, the defining feature of the 7th gen, but some earlier games like Sudeki gave us a taste of next-gen graphics!

    Definitely a big fan of this game -and that weird era of "Euro Anime" games, or "Western anime" games in general. I mean, this and Rare titles like Jet Force Gemini or Kameo are cut from the same cloth, y'know? Stuff like Oni (Bungie) and Septerra Core (Valkyrie Studios) are also really fascinating from an art standpoint. Anime hit big in the 90s if you were there for that initial wave of mature OVAs on late-night and from places like SunCoast video; if you saw Akira or Ghost in the Shell, you knew. I know a lot of people in the NEXT generation after that were exposed to anime thanks to Toonami, but it's clear devs behind games like these were a little older and it's interesting to see these kinds of attempts. Sudeki doesn't nail it - you're right about the simplistic character model faces - but it makes up for that with the wildly colorful and very comfy British Cartoony-ness that it has in common with Rare's fantasy games whenever is misses the mark as an anime game. Those animal people really are fun designs; they stick out like a sore thumb, but they're so "storybookish" and SO BRITISH. I love 'em 😄
    You just don't see this a lot anymore. Anime games come from every corner of the planet now, and every developer seems very skilled at ACTUALLY nailing the art style instead of ending up with some hybrid art style of western and eastern looks. I'm looking at stuff like Baldo: The Guardian Owls - from Spanish developer, xx - and they've done at least as good a job making a Ghibli looking game as Level 5 did with Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (not Ni No Kuni 2 though; that game is AMAZING looking and none of the characters are remotely off model in the sequel). Riot Games' (horribly titled) fighting game 2XKO looks like Arc System Works' made it. Ubi Soft made some GORGEOUS Naruto games for the 360 before Bandai Namco unified the license and just made the Ultimate Ninja Storm games multiplatform. etc. etc. etc. This kind of effort just doesn't happen anymore. The age of "Euro Anime" is dead, and that bums me out a bit.
    I know the game isn't perfect. I've never finished it, though I own 3 copies (one from GOG, one on Steam, and I bought my modded Xbox just to play this since it's not backwards compatible on current Xboxes, lol. I don't like the PC versions because the button configs are slightly awkward and the UI keeps referencing things like black and white buttons that always confuse me when using modern controllers. Yes it's a stupid nitpicky reason to opt for the original console game instead. No I don't care, lol.), and this is one of those games I usually return to every Spring or Summer thanks to the art and the vibe. I dive back into a load of JRPGs every year because of this, and I'm sure I'll get to beating this someday thanks to that factor... though you're right in that it's just too dang fun to explore and so forward momentum is not a big priority for me. I could hang out in New Brightwater just listening to that music for hours, man.
    Great review!

    This was such a unique blend of genres. At the time, I hadn't experienced anything like it, elder scrolls and the like wouldn't be in my collection for a few years. The real time and first person elements dazzled me. I'll always have that memory of exploring its world and collecting the abilities, all feeling fresh.
    Sudeki may never get a sequel but years later, on the 360, a game called Infinite Undiscovery came out. Made by totally different developers, it filled the same niche Sudeki had previously, blending jrpgs and western rpgs, real time environments and the like. It always felt like there'd be some kind of spiritual sequel each gen, but sadly idk if there's many games since that truly hit those marks. Great to see these games are still getting some discourse on em anyhow.

But if I was an Xbox kind of guy, I would have played this game during my childhood, or tween years, probably in another life. Maybe Sudeki will have a remake some day with a lot of deleted scenes, including the ending.

    I loved playing Sudeki. I never owed the game, I rented it several times from Blockbuster.
    My only criticism was that the game is too short. I would have loved a longer game and a sequel.
    I wish Xbox would port this game to gamepass so I can play on current gen.
    The combat and exploration was the best parts. I remember being enthralled with the lore. There is so much they could have done with this world.

    I enjoyed the game but it really does feel rushed towards the end. The worst part is by the time you're allowed to get everyone's ultimate weapon the game is already over and only one character gets to use it. Its somewhat clear the final dungeon was going to be that castle but it was cut for release. I also really liked the slowmo when you cast a spell. Its more satisfying to line up an attack to hit multiple enemies compared to simply selecting an ability then the target. I didn't mind the animations but the option to skip them would be welcome.

    So wait Sudeki got a new release in Japanese that had new voice work🤔 will definitely be tracking that down, like that new updated cover
    Bloot seeing Sudeki again brings back so many good memories ❤ love this game a lot, tracked down an OG Xbox just so I could play it again 😂 ( actually have 4 physical copies of this game)
    Would so love to see an updated version of Sudeki for modern consoles🥰 however I’m guessing the world would have to be turned upside down in order for that to happen 😭 such a unique game, I like the voice acting actually 😓 though I’ll admit if it got a facelift it would be better. And I agree the ending seems rushed a lot with to many unanswered questions and plot points..
    Sudeki definitely needed a sequel considering all the things left unresolved… sad to see such a cool game get left in the shadows
    Voice acting is definitely not the best but it works, the music is stellar however
    Very valid points on all counts on the game good review ❤❤
    I personally have never trusted any critics as their reviews of things always seem to be biased in one way or the other.
    It’s all about the social credit, the political acceptable narrative and what gets you the best paychecks 😈 keeping the higher ups happy is more important then the actual truth these days🏴‍☠️
    seriously how many critics or so called game journalists actually play any of the games they review?? Or just play 30 min and wright the review from that🤔

    Personally, I think it's really hard to enjoy Sudeki once you've played Fable...
    Obviously The Lost Chapter is way better... but TLC released about a year after Fable and obviously Sudeki...
    Fable TLC Was and remain a great game. Fable Anniversary, which is 100% faithful to the original experience with better graphics, is still a really enjoyable experience nowadays.
    I've played both games at their release, when I was about 7-8.
    I've played both in english back in the days, so it was really hard for me to finish them (My first language is French, so I didn't understood anything while playing those games)
    But, even with that language barrier, I still enjoyed Fable more than Sudeki...
    I've finished Fable TLC on my computer a couple years ago, Then played anniversary on Xbox and on PC...
    Despite Sudeki's lack of remaster. I saw the game was available on steam. So I added it to my library... Because I like revisiting games of my youth that I was unable to finish... In that same energy, I Played GTA trilogy last year...
    But as I said in the beginning... It's hard to enjoy Sudeki compared to Fable

    • @campxbox
      @campxbox  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can totally understand that. I do enjoy Sudeki standing on its own, but there are far better RPGs on the Xbox. Fable 100% is one of them.

      They are probably referring to disk cacheing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the hard drive on the Xbox has a partition dedicated to storing temporary files/assets from games as you’re playing them to put less loading burden on the optical (DVD) drive. Even if you were to “run out of space” it would only run out on the partition responsible for storing save files or downloads, not the cache.

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lots of games used caching to improve performance. Because they don't show an "installing, please wait" screen, it's hard to know which ones do this without delving into the inner workings (or listening carefully for HDD activity). Ninja Gaiden is the obvious one, where the initial startup is way longer than any later times, but there are others.

    I know most would not care about this, but I wonder if, would you mind uploading reviews of games that are in 4:3, with the video in 4:3, no black bars? I watch content on a CRT and 4:3 videos fill the screen proper, really gives me an idea of what the game was like on a crt. It wouldnt affect widescreen viewers anyway, but it would be a big help for anyone watching 4:3. Would just be a simple change in your video editor before you render it.

    I played this game for about 6 hours it has some nice rpg elements like fable. For me the combat gameplay is broken and gets frustrating later in the game so i never finished it unfortunately

      I definitely get that. The sea cave towards the end had some frustrating fights.

    14:30-14:55 Okay, now I'm convinced you're just looking for something to complain about.

      "It's been a while, hasn't it? My friends from the AMS. It's me, Goldman." House of Dead 2 has VA so bad its lovable
