    No matter how many times NASCAR shows up and performs at these events, European commentators continue to be surprised

    • @TheXtremeSS

      I can assure you that we don't think they're the same as the 80's trucks (or nascar in general)... however, we do know they aren't the most sophisticated machines, after all... do they use fully independent suspension and injection? As far as I know... no, they don't. Does that really matter? No.
      What most of the europeans don't know however is that they're still incredible machines, amazing to watch and listen and that they can actually turn right very well. Actually, first time I saw them turn right (first road race i saw with them) I loved it and asked to myself "Why don't they do more road races"? :)

      @cameronthomas2635 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Actually, Cup cars have used Mclaren Electronic Fuel Injection systems since 2012. NASCAR's other divisions (Xfinity and Trucks) are not allowed the use of EFI. Although, you are right about not running fully independent suspension. NASCAR mandates that teams may only use solid rear axils. (which if you ever get the chance to drive one makes it a lot more interesting, lol) We aren't allowed the use of Data Acquisition either, so any setup changes made are based off the drivers feel for the car. We also don't have driver assists of any kind (ABS, TCS, ESC). Hell, we don't even have speedometers or Fuel gauges. As I said before it's all about driver feel and a hope that your crew chief is good at math, so you know when your fuels gonna run out. lol
      I think a lot of European and some American divisions lack this aspect. while I know many of those divisions also mandate fewer driver assists. I feel like many of the Formula drivers have lost or just never gained the ability to really feel the car for what it is. Just about every Formula driver to try his hand in NASCAR has struggled except Mario Andretti but he was just good at everything on four wheels. haha

    • @Saugusari11
      @Saugusari11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      well...all of the above should be more welcomed in racing instead of all the assists and "technology development".
      Racing should be racing, visceral and tough :)

      They're tube frame, solid axle, extremely heavy, and low downforce bricks with tires less than half as grippy as the ones on most of the other cars going up the hill and literally no brakes. I can't say I blame 'em to be honest!
      These things are badass, but they aren't LMP1 cars. That's for sure.

      *****
      None of the cars in top tier of the shootout were/are "stock". Unless you are counting a $1.3 million dollar car that they only made 5 of. That "purpose built truck" weighs 3400 lbs without the driver, only rwd, and probably rides on the narrowest rubber of any of the top 10 cars on the hill. It's running a pushrod V-8 with a carburetor on top, all packaged inside a pickup truck shell with all the "aero" of a well worn brick. For it to finish 3rd behind a 990bhp hybrid awd prototype and a winged awd "time attack" special was pretty impressive IMO.

  • @closedcl8
    @closedcl8 8 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Beast, although I am not too entirely surprised by it. For one, the tires are some of the hardest-wearing in racing, and with a baseline low-drag package it's got enough speed to recover lost time. Sure, it's quite crude, with a relatively old-timey V8 that makes more power than the rear tires can handle, with a chassis design that's as old as dirt, and has next to no downforce whatsoever, but the truck does have its merits, and it showed here. The driver, too, is also dazzling, able to keep at it from start to finish, averting calamitous brushes with enough Man Force to KO a hippo. Brilliant stuff all around.
    Besides, it's not like you lose value with the 250k you plunk for a CW Truck. NASCAR's calendar is much bigger than GT ones, and has a few thousand more fans.

    • @aaronisgrate

      Ricky Foley It's not actually a truck, it's basically the same as the NASCAR cars, just with a different look, and it is a full blown race car. And, no, BMW never used a Ford engine, and McLaren never used a Ford engine. The only BMW engine McLaren ever used was in the F1, that was a V12, and it was never based on anything American.
      You might be thinking of Koenigsegg, who briefly used a Ford engine but later designed their own engine that was significantly different from, and better than, the Ford V8 they used.

    • @rickyfoley4294
      @rickyfoley4294 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +idontcare80 That's right about the Koenigsegg. This truck is a full racecar and it does share the same 850hp motor, but the chassis is different. All i'm saying is, there's no replacement for displacement. At the least, having full torque at 2000 rpm is a nice feeling and advantage. Lately, turbos on v8s have been pretty popular in the states.

    • @BottleRocket11
      @BottleRocket11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not to mention that the Camping World trucks weren't particularly designed with taking quick turns in succession in mind. Add the RWD and roughly 850 HP going through said rear wheels and the fact that Skinner's spoiler on this truck is roughly 5 times larger than the average CWTS truck says it all. His handling of the beast is unbelievable, though. Shows how comfortable he has gotten with the climb the past few years.

    • @thegreatcarraway
      @thegreatcarraway 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree. Skinner has done goodwood the past few years and absolutely loves the hillclimb and makes sure his truck is set up just for this. Let me put it this way, he ran about the same time last year and was around tenth. That was also in better conditions. The rain was on and off this year.

    • @BottleRocket11
      @BottleRocket11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +idontcare80 are you just the salty type who hates any and all things nascar? That's the vibe I'm getting from you. The fact that the thing doesn't handle should make it all the more impressive that Skinner contended with a purpose built hill climber and an AWD hyper car all while weighing more than both and having to put all the power through two wheels. It's literally impossible to deny how impressive his run is all things considered

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What's impressive is that a car that conforms to modern emissions and safety standards beats this pure race car while running on road tires.
      And, yes, NASCAR is pathetic, this video proves that.

      It's a pickup truck in name and shape only. Under that sheetmetal is a purpose-built tube frame chassis and racing suspension. That truck weighs roughly 3300 lbs and has an apocalyptic V8 pushing 800+ horsepower. Stock cars in general, and the top level Cup cars in particular rely on staggering amounts of mechanical grip to compensate for the relatively small amount of downforce they produce, making them alarmingly fast for their size.
