Avengers Endgame is one of my favorite Marvel MCU films. You wouldn't know it considering some of the content we have made recently. Today's video is discussing of of the poorer characters arcs in the films... Professor Hulk. Today's video discusses the Hulk, Bruce Banner, and the character of Professor Hulk... and how this addition to endgame robbed both Banner and The Hulk from completing a successful character arc.

Despite the fact that we made two video essays heavily critiquing character arcs for two of the most beloved MCU characters (Hulk and Thor) just this week... We need to be honest. Key Issues still loved Avengers Endgame. These faults didn't ruin the film or the characters. Just before you go getting crazy in the comments, just chill and take the video for what it is. Ultimately we are fine with these characters and know they will come back stronger. The point of these videos is to discuss their character arcs, development, and what we would have liked to see out of them.

I know why the Hulk was like that it was a new thing for the Hulk he was always the guy who just smashed yes his personality was different in Thor Ragnarok but it was mostly played for comedic effect of this one it felt cool to see him finally find peace with the Hulk I like this depiction I'm not sure how long it's going to last but if they do a bird back to it I will be okay with that I didn't think he needed to fight Thanos even though this was mostly focused around the original Avengers
And also you not being a fan of the current station in endgame for Thor because you liked that he was fat play fortnite and drink booze it was a bit funny he was grieving how how you spectin to act after subsequently failing yeah they come change that around when he saw his mother or at the end of the movie where he finally gets his act together and lose his people like a true king but I feel like he needs to find himself first before I can come back to truly rule them he needs to go on a journey to find himself but I do agree that he was depowered even with two hammers that he wasn't able to defeat Thanos but that's okay
I'm a bit disappointed with Hulk in Endgame as well. However, I still have hope for Hulk's character. If the Russos decided to introduce Prof. Hulk as some kind of stepping stone to introducing Worldbreaker. Worldbreaker Hulk is just as smart as Bruce but not only is he more savage and brutal than Hulk but he's also far stronger. Introducing the kind of intellect that Bruce had to the character of the Hulk via Prof. Hulk would be the perfect way to slowly introduce where the line between man and monster within Bruce began to blur.
@aydooknow Really if Thor wasnt drunk and fat, that battle at the end would've been very short....King Thor with both weapons could've easily defeated Thanos (without Infinity Stones) and his army easily....wouldn't have made best ending :p.

Thomas Carr Jr if he was world breaker then no me coulda stopped him. No one woulda been able to stop the hulk and that woulda been bad. Marvel didn’t need another big bad right after endgame. If hulk killed thanos then the ending wouldn’t have felt satisfying like it ended up being

The moment the World Breaker Hulk appears, is the time where the world needs to be destroyed. (Like say, Phase 4 of the MCU?)
Since they went with the Professor Hulk route, it would be impossible for them to have a rematch considering that Hulk would turn back into Banner but with Savage Hulk’s mindset if he built up enough anger

They didn't. Hulk is an extremely versatile character that has so many stories that could easily be tied into the MCU. For example, my favorite Hulk story (stories?) ever is Worldbreaker Hulk. Extremely powerful, intelligent and ruthless. The animalistic hulk of 2003 and 2008 was refreshing but disappointing in light of the superior Hulk we could've gotten. Instead, they wasted that on A FUCKING THOR MOVIE. incredibly disappointing. We never got a satisfying Hulk we got the shadow of one.
Well I was satisfied with 2003 Hulk and 2008 Hulk was good too but I think I would've given a better Hulk than the MCU Hulk...I would make a World Breaker Hulk movie and I would base everything on the comics...unlike directors these days

@Apostle9590 Believe me bro, I used to be nostalgic years ago but I cut it out of my mind because nostalgia can cause bias. For example I used to think Gen 1 Pokemon were the legit Pokemon only because they came first but then I started to respect all Pokemon gens and now I respect them all.
I liked professor hulk but I really wished they showed him fight more. I felt like he was wasted in infinity war.

I liked Professor Hulk for the most part. He wasn't a primary character in Endgame, so the Professor persona was a good way to develop his character in an interesting way without requiring a bunch of screen time. While a rematch with Thanos would've been cool, there just wasn't enough room in the movie for that. I don't think it's a good idea to keep Professor Hulk long term, as Hulk works best when Bruce and Hulk are seperate personas. I'd like to see him start as Professor Hulk in the next Avengers film, but fracture throughout the film. I've been reading The Immortal Hulk, and I would absolutely LOVE to see the Devil Hulk in the next film.

I agree 1000% no Thanos rematch. No epic hulk smash. Not even a single transformation. I was sooo let down. Hulk is my favorite and what endgame did for the Hulk and Thor I was definitely let down.
They didn’t do that much for them because they are going to be in future films. That’s why cap and iron man had the spotlight.

Y’all need to stop complaining honestly. Thor being depressed makes sense. He’s lost everything, and he has to live with the thought of killing thanos too late. Imagine killing the person who nukes the whole world but late, everyone’s dead. The dude is depressed, he doesn’t want to be Thor anymore. Holding a hammer doesn’t fix depression. Nothing fixes depression that fast, so when he caught the hammer in the past, his body stayed the same because he’s still depressed, abs don’t come back from holding a hammer. And he also fulfilled the Odin role way more, he became the king of Asgard. I loved the tied beard and longer hair look, he looked a lot like Odin and him fighting alongside everyone was amazing. Hulk also needed to learn how to control himself, you can’t just have a wild animal with no way to control it. You also can’t have a character who does nothing but hit things, even if it’s what he does in the comics. In the comics he doesn’t always smash, he also becomes calm. The hulk in the Avengers movie was awesome because we had never seen a hulk depicted so well, being so rage filled and animal like. Age of ultron only brought him more character development in my opinion because he learned that he CAN control his powers and how to keep both hands on the steering wheel, but he also showed that he can still smash. Ragnorok did the hulk justice IMO because he now had both hands on the wheel, he still smashed and had rage, but he could speak, and could understand what others were telling him. He wasn’t just a mindless robot meant for only 1 thing. Infinity war showed that the hulk can’t always win, and that what makes the hulk hulk isn’t just the big green guy, it’s banner. Banner is the brain in the brawn. Endgame was amazing, literally marvels masterpiece, and hulk was amazing. Professor hulk was the pure version of hulk, banner and hulk in the same being. He was strong and smart and it really showed. It showed his control and his ability to keep calm in the tough situations.
Marc Mckenzie agreed not to mention they made capt America basically a god for no reason. And completely trashed the whole Thor storyline in infinity war. Made it seem like he nearly died to get the axe for no reason.

DaBigDaddy - Absolutely, Big Daddy! I mean I have not seen this movie yet, but just hearing that there was 'NO REMATCH' just disappoints the hell out of me. Turning him into Professor Hulk is fine and all to help mend the relationship between him and Banner, but to be honest they have "nerfed" the hell out of his powers, both him and Thor. Hulk was always one of the strongest characters there is, a savage powerhouse that if you pissed off, well, the madder he got you know the rest. LOL And so, well, I wanted to see that Hulk appear at some point in the movie to take on Thanos - one on one and beat the ever loving crap out of him for a bit before Thanos recovered his senses to out think and out smart Hulk because he is Thanos after all. Yeah, would have been cool to see him changing into his Grey version or whatever color brings out the most power in him for a few minutes to take on Thanos, I would have loved to have seen that.
He has an injured arm. I don't think they nerfed his strength. Because in this movie they didn't show how powerful he is.
I juts noticed that Hulks big muscular body seem to Decrease In the start of Thor Ragnarok to Endgame
3301 Well in Endgame Prof. Hulk explains that he took the best from Bruce Banner and from Hulk and combined them together. Bruce is naturally skinny so this could have some effect on Prof. Hulk’s body type since he’s meant to be more humanoid in the movie. Also, Prof. Hulk might not even hit the gym.

I always liked Professer Hulk and wanted--but never thought I'd see--a version of him onscreen. Still, since Hulk gets stronger the madder he gets, Professer Hulk is always one of the weakest versions of Hulk in the comics. So I thought they did him really well in the movie.

I didn't hated how everything went. It was just sad how Disney ruined such an amazing character with depth and give us Shrek. (I know, Professor Hulk is in the comics, but the way it was presented buried the character). I would have rather to have professor Hulk at the end of Endgame, not before.

Right. He lost to Thor twice, lost to Hulk buster, lost to Thanos. The only fight he "won" was against Loki. So disappointed that they made Hulk so weak. There was no need to fear that guy because two of the Avengers could beat him.
Downplayed with todays comic book Hulk standard, I agree. But Hulk was never meant to be the ridiculously OP character he has become in the comics, stomping the world to pieces and having regeneration that matches Wolverine. He was meant to be the strongest mortal, not the strongest "immortal". Stan Lee is on record stating that they came up with Thor when they needed a being that could kick Hulk's ass.
Thor is also heavily nerfed in the MCU, but he's still has his awesome moments. Chris did a great job making him a warm and relatable character, even if the comic relief gets too much sometimes.
Truthfully, Endgame Hulk was more of the Banner-controlled Hulk from the original Secret Wars rather than the "Professor" or Merged Hulk from Peter A. David's run with the character.
Banner Hulk is simply Bruce Banner controlling the Hulk's body (E.G Endgame), whereas the Professor or Merged Hulk was conceived as a true integration of his three core personalities Banner, Savage Green Hulk, and the original Gray Hulk or Joe Fix-it, exhibiting traits of all three.

Because they hadn't shown Gray Hulk they made Professor Hulk in Endgame a Hulk with Hulk's abilities and confidence with Banner's genius and the height is like the middle of both

I'm aware that they couldn't incorporate a Gray Hulk that doesn't exist and know that he knows. My point still stands, however. Probably the only time that Banner showed in Hulk was when meeting the Ancient One and the bench toss. The former resulted in Hulk getting the Banner knocked out of him, and the latter, nothing. All I'm saying is that the movie version was more similar to Banner Hulk than the Professor Hulk persona if were drawing parallels between comics and movies.
I liked this version but the gama radiation from the snap was the perfect opportunity to unleash the hulk smash!
It's my only regret about endgame
And shouldn't his healing factor of taken care of any arm damage rather quickly. He was still using a sling at the funeral.

I used to think that Mark Ruffalo was the definitive live-action hulk. I found he pulled off both Banner and Hulk really well. However, I think that as time goes on, Edward Norton as Bruce Banner and Lou Ferrigno as Hulk are definetely better, especially after I saw what Infinity War and Endgame did with the Hulk. The ideas for his charatcer in those films were really cool and could be really interesting. The proof is in the original comics where Prof Hulk comes from, where he's both really intelligent and self-spoken but also very tough and emotional, which is what a combination of Bruce and Hulk SHOULD be. But the problem is that they played those ideas like a big joke. As a result, Prof Hulk is nowhere near as cool as he could've been. Another thing is the action itself. After looking back on Ruffalo's performance as Bruce Banner, I notice that he's not as good as I remember. He always talks and acts in a way where it looks like he just took a nap before filming. He never really seems into the role. Edward Norton plays his character very serious and is obviously very dedicated to the role of Bruce Banner. And you also have Ferrigno doing the motion capture and voice of the Hulk being more intimidating then when Ruffalo took over. There's no silly jokes or dabbing done by the Bruce Banner and Hulk seen in The Incredible Hulk 2008. Norton's playing this character like an actual serious version of Bruce Banner. He's not just Tony's science assistant like in the first two avengers films, nor is he just a big joke like in the last two avengers films. He's a fleshed out, interesting character who really has to go through some internal conflict and trauma, and doesn't just brush it aside with a bunch of one-liners and such. In Marvel( and all comic universes), there are dramatic characters and humorous charatcers. Iron Man, Spiderman, Deadpool,etc are more humorous charatcers. The Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, etc are are the more dramatic characters who are more straight-forward. So , in the MCU, when Tony Stark and Peter Parker are making jokes all the time, it fits 100%. But when you see Bruce Banner in Infinity War trying to turn into the hulk and instead looking like he's taking a shit in public, or when you see Prof Hulk taking selfies and dabbing, it's somewhat painful to watch. That's why Edward Norton and the people behind the Incredible Hulk (Louis Letterrier, etc) , even though that film has some flaws, understood the character ten times more then anybody doing the modern MCU films. That's why, as of now, Edward Norton is the definitive Banner to me.

I wanted Professor Hulk to be a fusion of the two personalities. Bruce banner in that he's skiddish but smart, but hulk in that he's over emotional and child like. And his voice and speaking manirisms would also fuse. He'd speak in short sentences with a lower voice, but not as low or as simple as it was in Ragnarok.

Strong as Thanos is, his strength is still limited...while Hulk's has no limit. That's why I say if you start out with a more powerful incarnation (World Breaker, etc.), their increased durability, healing factor and, most importantly, STRENGTH (not to mention intelligence...) will allow them to dominate Thanos physically. Can they defeat him? The possibly does exist, but not probably, because of all the extra powers Thanos has at his disposal.

I like how we got a different interpretation of hulk, but the problem I had with endgames hulk is that he had a very mild reaction to Natasha’s death and he should have reverted back to the original and been super pissed at losing the women he loves forever, the hulk vs Thanos rematch would of been a redemption for his character as well, hopefully we see more of angry hulk in the future

Since the movie was primarily about Captain America and Ironman they had to nerf Hulk and Thor. If Captain Marvel could handle Thanos 1 on 1 then Hulk and Thor could have 2v1’d the crap out of him. Captain America and Ironman would have never needed to step up either.

It is noticeable in the final battle in Endgame. Korg dwarfed him whereas in Thor Ragnarok Hulk towered over Korg. he clearly shrunk in size. He is a foot shorter
This is actually interesting. I didn't notice the height difference at first, but this could mean something for hulk's powers in the future. Since professor hulk in the MCU is banner in control, he's going to be less angry compared to before. This finally might mean hulk's power is going to be correlating with his anger (which also results in in him having infinite strength.) But then again, this is wishful thinking. He's probably going to be kept in the trash like Thor; they are just a means for comic relief.
14:18 Part of why Professor Hulk wasn’t very useful in the film apart from his shining moment (in my opinion) was because this still isn’t what Bruce Banner wants... deep down, he doesn’t want this power, this Hulk; Professor Hulk is just him finding a more permanent way to keep the Hulk under control. Banner and the Hulk’s characters probably won’t progress until Banner really takes on the mentality of a hero- that since he has this power, he has the privilege of protecting others from those who won’t or can’t control their own power. Not the duty or responsibility, the privilege. He’ll have to stop viewing the Hulk as a burden or threat, which in turn will make the Hulk more willing to be controlled by him.
This is part of what I saw from all of the Avengers in Endgame; each of them tried to cope with their failure and eventually realized they couldn’t accept it. Captain America joined a support group and tried to help other people cope, since knowing he was helping someone made him feel a little better in the moment. Black Widow buried herself in hero work to escape her grief. Banner tried to find a way to deal with the weaknesses that had made him ineffective during Infinity War, the end result being a form that would allow him to use Hulk’s strength without losing control; however, he didn’t solve the underlying issues, resulting in this form also being useless since Banner lacks any sort of violence or aggressiveness in his own nature. Iron Man clung tightly to what he still had, Pepper and his young daughter Morgan, and retreated as far from danger as he could. Thor, who came the closest to killing Thanos and failed because of his thirst for vengeance, was a broken man who gave up on being King of Asgard and spent his time drinking and playing video games to bury his shame and heartbreak. I feel Hawkeye might have been on the verge of insanity after losing his entire family, but he was out killing evildoers, perhaps trying to ease his guilt over his failure.

The problem is that they didn't really develop him - as in Avengers, they skipped a whole bunch of character development (for both Bruce and Hulk) by jumping to the endpoint and sweeping it under the rug. The difference is that in Avengers, "I'm always angry" represents the endpoint of a more-or-less familiar process - of Bruce and Hulk achieving a detente - of Bruce accepting that the Hulk is a part of him, and learning to work together to achieve things - something that was sketched in in Incredible Hulk (I forget the exact line, but it's something like: "I can't cure the Hulk, but maybe I can aim him"). In Endgame, there's no hint that any compromise or any growth on the part of the Hulk has happened - rather, Bruce is now a stronger Captain America, and the Hulk no longer exists.
Felt the exact same way. The deterioration of the hulk left a bitter taste in my mouth. And frankly ruined the movie. Like many, i was expect hulk to go world breaker and open a can of whoop ass on the mad titan. Yet to my disappointed, he did nothing. Absolutely nothing. Worse still, he's left in a cast. The hulks regeneration is one of, if not the best in the marvel universe. And how on earth can gama radiation hurt a gama-eradiated monster?!? *facepalm*
Seems to me, there was a concerted effort to weaken traditional masculine characters and empower the females.

@@AbrahamSuneet that's because almost everything they throw at him bounces off him. Hulk hasn't face any weapon that is threat to him. He's tanked bullet like it's nothing several times and thst doesn't peirce is skin at all. By the time wolverine and Hulk face each other in battle in mcu, we will see Hulks healing factor display. Hulk is pretty much nearly indestructible.
In my opinion the Hulk was written awfully. They had a massive missed opportunity in Age of Ultron and til this day I feel this one difference would have significantly improved the Hulk but none can dispute the way they handled him in Infinity War and Endgame was nothing short of an amateurish cop out.
Your strongest characters refusing to fight and not using their literal power during a time the very foundations of life are at stake strongly indicates you have no idea what the hell you're doing.
It's almost like Thor being afraid of lightning the one time he needs to fully use it.
Back in AoU when the city was falling to Earth, that should have been the Hulk's biggest and most highlighted failure which could have better explained why Banner banished (no pun intended) himself to space. Instead of saving the old Secret Wars reference for Endgame it should have been in AoU where he could have literally caught the city from falling, but momentarily. This would have proven Hulk to have far more strength than hes ever shown for future installments but at the same time logically the weight and gravity of such a massive structure would crumble, reducing his opportunity to save the city to literal dust in his fingers. Even with all that strength he couldnt save them. Fans of the Hulk, sympathy and empathy would have better understood why Banner decided to leave and the manchild version of Hulk would make more sense. It would have also helped us understand Professor Hulk can do similar by repeating it in Endgame.
The Hulks character was destroyed when he gave up after 1 loss to Thanos. This contradiction decreased his overall relevance and now no one can take him seriously since hes refusing to do the one thing he was made to do : Smash.
That being said I blame this entirely on the political climate of the modern times.
*NEVER* forget The Hulk was created during the time Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno and body building itself was a spectacle. This pussy padded day and age dubs that as "Toxic Masculinity" so any alpha male character that takes pride in their strength is made a fool of on the big screen. Case and point : The Incredible Hulk and Mighty Thor. AFTER Stan passed.

Trying to catch the city is such a bad idea, no one would have sympathy for Hulk when he failed to do so. Hulk would've just shot through the city like a road spike immediately. You cannot catch something that large falling that fast as the city would've collapsed under it's own inertia the moment Hulk would've touched it. People don't lament when bad ideas fail.
That would've ruined the immersion outright. It would've been such a divergence from logic that people would no longer been watching the movie and instead would be criticizing it.
Also, failing to catch the city would've literally destroyed the Earth so that would've sucked.
Marvel clearly believes they can't make a successful stand alone Hulk movie in the current setting of movies. They have to interlay his story arcs in the collaborative movies, and with the way Endgame left him, I anticipate he still has a story to tell. Hopefully, he hits up Dr. Strange next.
Finally, your last comments on "toxic masculinity" clearly indicates you don't have an accurate understanding of that phrase. Being a body builder isn't toxic. That's not what the criticisms are about. Not all masculinity is toxic. The type that is toxic is the type that promotes unjustified violence, sexual assault, emotional repression and over self-reliance to the point of refusing help from others when needed thus resulting in unnecessary strain and damage. These are all traits that are objectively bad for men and society. That is what toxic masculinity is by definition. I hope you internalize this definition and realize your judgements have been inaccurate.
With that in mind, I think we can both agree the MCU Hulk isn't a commentary on toxic masculinity. He's a commentary on mental health.

Hulk caught a landmass larger than the one in the movie on his back in Secret Wars. The classic secret wars not the revamped version. The feat would have fit better in age of Ultron than Endgame because feral Hulk is stronger than Professior Hulk. Not the other way around. So to waste a feat like that on Professor Hulk only for him to not even engage in the fight afterwards was a terrible idea but you know as long as the character does exactly what they werent designed to do you guys applaud it as development these days.

Displaying an amount of strength Hulk fans have yet to see in any incarnation of the character on screen but momentarily since it would have crumbled on top of him due to the sheer weight of the land mass because obviously gravity would make it collapse.
I'm not the one you should correct when it comes to that term because the definition I see thrown around falls in line with what I stated. In the current climate SJW's dub anything strong and confident as toxic while renditions of the weak and feeble overcoming out of no where is viewed as profound and just.
It has been widely regarded Hulk was handled horrifically in the MCU and it all has to do with the fact they kept nerfing his overall status. I dont believe characters should be weakened for the sake of immersion. That's why we're in this mess in the first place. Hulk hasnt one impressive feat in the MCU compared to his comic counter part. Taking down Fenrir is literal childsplay. Hulk had a man bun at the end of the last movie.

Ya, me too pretty much. I have a different opinion or theory on the gauntlet part tho. I understand that the way they went with the hulk and Bruce wasn't that good, I wasn't much bothered really, but it also makes sense why the Russo's did this for hulk in endgame, it's realistic to what Bruce would do with the hulk and the russos maybe didnt want the hulk to steal too much of the spotlight or cause a different ending to the movie maybe. Maybe they want to save better things for the hulk for later, or maybe they didnt want to have too much time for the movie to run, I'm not sure, hopefully the russos give an answer in an interview in the future. I don't think what they did with hulk in Ragnarok wasnt bad either btw, he was happy on sakaar, however it's spelled, and that one scene where he was trying not to turn back to banner was pretty good. The way they went with him in infinity war wasnt bad, he wasnt actually afraid of thanos, he was tired of being used by banner to fight things. What key said in the video about him being afraid and then overcoming that fear would've been pretty good too and realistic, but what they actually did with him in infinity war was realistic too

While the Hulk in Avengers: Endgame is being labeled the "Professor" Hulk. This was more like the Banner Hulk that appeared in Incredible Hulk from issues 272-299. This Hulk was controlled by Banner; however, couldn't really get madder, nor get stronger. His injury toward the end was taking awhile to heal. Hulks's healing factor is tied into the "Madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets."
The Professor Hulk was another name given to the Merged Hulk. The Merged Hulk introduced in Incredible Hulk 377 was Banner having the strength of the Green along with the cunningness and savagery of the Gray Hulk. (The MCU has never introduced the Gray Hulk.) The Merged Hulk had no problem getting madder nor stronger. He was plenty powerful enough, and even experienced times of true Savagery (examples being in Incredible Hulk 381, 390, 400, 413, and 416.) The Merged Hulk never reverted to Banner until he developed a subconscious failsafe after meeting the Maestro in Incredible Hulk: Future Imperfect which took place between issues 416 and 417. The failsafe only lasted from issues 425-438, and that's when he became a younger version of the Maestro.
It wasn't until issue 15 or 16 of the 3rd series of the Incredible Hulk where the Merged Hulk was being referred as the Professor Hulk. The Professor Hulk was said to not to be Banner; however, even another incarnation of the Hulk. That idea was later retconned out of the series around issue 87, and established the Merged Hulk as Banner with the Gray and Green.
Now, it is disappointing not to see the Hulk go World Breaker on Thanos in Endgame. The World Breaker is what many have been hoping to see, and not the Banner Hulk.
I know, it's being referred to as "Professor" by MCU; however, it was more like Banner Hulk. Need the Gray Hulk too before the "Professor" can be considered, and by that I mean the true incarnation being the Merged Hulk.
crash777burn Thats true. The actual Prof Hulk still has the Hulk’s abilities while being more of an intelligent fighter. In Endgame it was essentially just Banner as a buffed up green guy.
Not seeing world breaker hulk ruined the entire movie for me. It was well worth the 50 fucking dollar to watch but was left wanting. On the bright side we got the see all the females team up for a beam attack and captain marvel overpowering a gauntlet wielding thanos...because you know...feminism.
