Best description for proper use of the chain whip ever! I should adopt it for future cassette changes. Yes, very convenient that my SRAM GX 10-52 cassettes are only one piece.
Great video, thank you. I didnt realise that the tool for wrenching on it is actually to undo the ring at the very top of the cassette - I had thought that it was for a nut I had in the center.
I had to spray things down with Kroil penetrating oil for 2 days (like 5 applications) prior being able to get my cassette free. I have a SRAM XD, and the threads are sorta on the inside (back - big_ring - center) of the cassette, so I sprayed from both the front, and the back -- making all attempts to get some lubricant into the threads. To finally get my cassette free, I had my wheel sorta horizontal on the ground with my foot & leg sorta pinning the wheel down, and really had to torque. While torquing, since my spline tool doesn't have a central 12mm pin (I suspect that the central pin is helpful), I really focused on turning about the center of the wheel -- and minimizing any sheer forces. I don't know if it was the different technique (on the ground opposed to on lap or vertical), the penetrating oil, or focusing on turning about the center that made the difference (likely all three). Good Luck!
Hey Anna, I had a question regarding the gouging many report on the shimano HG freehub body. Is it just lack of care or is it that the hub design is just not capable of taking higher torque/impacts?
Great video , I just got both my bikes new chains & cassettes from the bike shop , wasn’t cheap either , now I’ve seen this I think I’ll attempt it myself next year
Quick question @GMBN , at 6:05 you can see the cassette disassembled, the smaller cogs removed showing the remaining block. I have the same XTR cassette, appears to have a broken rivet holding the 8th gear cog in place on the cassette block on, is this normal or do I have a chance with a warranty claim ?
Great video. I know this is an old video, but I just purchased a Cube Aim EX 2023. The cassette doesn't seem to be running true. The shop says they have no service, but they are offering a good price for the bike. I wonder if it's something that can be fixed? Any ideas? Appreciate it.
Thank you for this video. I learned a lot. No need to go to a bike shop to remove my bike cassette and install a new one. I just need those tools you showed in the video. And its just that easy. By the way, how tight should the bike cassette be? How many Newton Meters?
Glad you found this useful! If you're interested in building up your MTB toolbox, we use tools from Park Tool; however, other brands are available. Normally you'll find that cassettes are torqued to around 40Nm. Although it's worth checking the locking wheel ring.👍
#AskGMBNTech Hey Anna, Doddy, I've been schooling myself for a year or two now on all things MTB maintenance, building custom wheels, suspension is on my short list. Your video's are such a help and inspiration to just tackle stuff, which I really appreciate. I've seen your rear derailleur vid and I for the life of me, cannot get the clutch axle to come out those 12s derailleurs which have seen some daunting weather here in Belgium over the winter. I believe it's a matter of applying the required mallet pressure on it, but I'm a little reluctant to breaking stuff.. Any tips are appreciated.
im not sure if theres a tool for it, but you can kind of measure it by shifting gears. if the chain doesnt shift all the way and the chain is ticking after shifting, is too loose. if it skips a sprocket and shifts up 2 gears in one click, the cable is too tight. gmbn tech also made a vid about adjusting your rear mech explaining all this. the best one i found is a vid by parktool on adjusting the rear mech. hope it helps(after a year xd)
@@Tom-jj6jo Yes, indexing the gears involves a lot of practice. Once you know the technique. It would be easy as long as you install good parts as well as have a well maintained sprocket, chain and chainring.
In the video there is no mention of the Adhesive Ring in the back of the cassette. On my deore cassette it fail off when i removed the cassette !!! took me quit a time to find where it goes.
i was filling my rear tire with sealant, while shacking the tire for the sealant to be everywhere inside the cassette fell off, i asked canyon they said it's normal, is it normal? (stock wheels on canyon spectral cf8 mullet cllctv)
All videos explain well. But NO ONE explains how to remove stuck threads. Which is what you see every day. Nobody changes newly installed and loose spare parts. We change when we have to change, and they are practically welded together.
Yep. I've just rounded off a removal tool. Damaged the tool and the locknut. Going to be a grinder and punch set time! By far the tightest one i've ever done
#AskGMBNTech Hey Anna, hey Doddy! Mountainbike tires are getting harder and harder to mount on rims. Last time was the first time i had to go to a shop and ask the guys there to mount my tires. I‘m riding michelin wild enduro race lines and bontrager elite carbon wheels and couldn‘t get the tires on the rim. Actually really hurt both of my thumbs badly when trying to fit the tires. How the hell do you fit tires without hurting yourself? Special tools? Cheers 🤙
Mine was so stuck i thought it was welded on. I just sprayed a tiny, tiny amount of wd40 around the lockpin rim. Waited ten minutes went back and it came right off.
Push harder! It'll come off! Worse case scenario it damages your freehub body and you will need to replace it. But if it's got to come off then it's got to come off!
Would it be nice if U did not have to replace the entire cassette all the time. I use the 3 high gears 80% of the time. If I replace the chain on time it would be cheaper if I could only replace the 3 high gears every other time.
Wish you would wear rubber gloves to protect those gorgeous hands, your video is classy and very informative with no guesswork and exactly what i needed as I’m about to replace the cassette on my Trance e bike, stay beautiful xx

What about the spacers between the gears? I sometimes see none, one, two or different thickness.
How do I ensure the spacing is perfect?
Don't have a chain whip? Try an old chain and a Vise Grip tool 😉

Nice that you have a pre-loosened cassette for this video!
But what can I try if mine won't budge with these tools? Very stuck 🤷♂️ thanks!

I really like the pedros vice whip instead of the chain whip, a much firmer grip.

It's more likely the indexing on the gears limiter screws . Watch on TH-cam. I've got cube mountain bikes too good bikes
Clear directions, thanks!
Brilliant. Even I understood that explanation!

how do you fix a chain whip?
What do you do if it's seized? I can't do anything to loosen it. Not even hammering the tool

HG hub will fit 12 speed cassette from Sunrace, for anyone wondering
Or SRAM 12s with 11t smaller cog, like SX... But as aftermarket replacement surnrace is lighter and cheaper for sure!
Not all Sunrace cassettes though! They also produce cassettes with 10 teeth cogs, which won't fit on HG freehub bodies.
My test Shimano piece that connects to tire came off and still can't figure it out
Luv Park tools

Store it in a river or a lake.

Take this moment of silence for you and your cassette. 🫡

LOL the bolt you pushed is not tight . I pushed hard down , didn't even move a CM
