I saw this when it aired and one moment has always stayed with me: Costas quoting an obscure Paul Simon song by heart and Simon feeling flattered. Between Costas having a say in who’s booked (people he’s already a fan of) and Costas doing research on guests ahead of time, “Later” had a lot of moments like this. Costas was a great interviewer!
I didn’t understand until recently just how fun Paul Simon is to listen to speak. His music is out of this world astounding. Most people my age or older know that. I am born in 72. Anyway. He is so fun to listen to speak as well.
One Trick Pony is a movie made by a musician, about musicians, and for musicians. As a musician myself for over 40 years, it's one of my favorite movies ever. Just love it!
I wish Costas would have continued as an interviewer on this show. Regarding Paul's thoughts on Dylan, he is very accurate in describing Dylan's voice conveying different meanings at once. Dylan has greatly made up for any past indiscretions on other songwriters, first in his book Chronicles, Vol 1, his 100 radio shows on a cross section of music that influenced him, and now on his recently released The Philosophy Of Modern Music, riffing on the greatness of 66 curated songs. Well done Bob. You are a class act educator.
My goodness, the times when guests were actually given the time and space to ponder, to say intelligent things slowly and paced. This is a conversation with depth, not a fast food tidbit.
This third part of the interview reveals a rather mature writer looking back and defending past thoughts and media quotes in an honest manner--to say Paul Simon is profound is an understatement.
i've been a fan of paul simon and art garfunkel for 50 odd years...not so much a fan of paul simon as a communicator, but this series of interviews has changed my opinion, simon is relaxed unbuttoned and intelligent on the history of music and his place in it.
One Trick Pony was a good movie, very well reviewed -- two thumbs up from Siskel and Ebert. That it wasn't a hit is no strike against its quality. Lots of good movies are not great commercial successes.
When it comes to constructing a pop song with a great melody, you won't find many better than The Beatles, as a Brit, personally, I think Ray Davies is more comparable with Paul Simon and Bob Dylan.
@@gorgeousgeorge643 Paul McCartney said that Ray Davies got his attention when he was asked who got his attention at the height of the Beatles. Ray was the only name he mentioned ....

I concur- Bob is World Class

I'm not the first person to make this observation, but Paul Simon is really, really articulate.
Thank you, old pothead. He's kind of a smart guy.

A woman I grew up with was an extra in the scenes filmed in CLE. She ended up being his gf for a few weeks
@@ClevelandLiveMusic Wow. That's amazing!
It definitely was a movie with a pretty limited audience. Not a bad movie, just really a niche picture.
Wow, Costas' understanding of Paul's soul and artistry is a real "miracle and wonder"! It's precious!
Bob is a great interviewer. When he really likes the subject, it is magic.
Paul Somon is erudite and articulate - as is Bob Costas, the combination makes the interview a joy to watch.

I agree. Having interacted with Mr. Costas. He regrets leaving Later when he chose to focus upon sports .
Auto-signing his books at 600 a piece was a low point. Who needs his nonsense verse pov on Sinatra or the Moonglows....

That is why Later is my favorite interview program
Great upload! For some reason I didn't expect this kind of bracing honesty and thoughtfulness. His best music does the same. Duh.
Yet another OUTSTANDING interview... thank you.
Costas is the best...or at least my favorite interviewer
I liked One Trick Pony.
I don't need a critic to advise me whether the movie was good or not.

Such an interesting interview love it
Really enjoyed watching this three part interview with Garfunkel's two-part interview. Extremely valuable American cultural history.
Love Paul Simon
Brilliant The way he said that about Bob Dylan the man is a gentleman.
Thank you for the 3rd part!
thanks for the uploads brotha

I enjoyed One Trick Pony. I just like Paul so it's an easy one!
You have a cool channel here, and I like your commentary. Bob Costas gives excellent interviews.
Thank you very much
Dylan could sing technically brilliant when he wanted to. NASHVILLE SKYLINE is a great example.
Love ❤ 😍 💖 ✌
Re Dylan, FWIW, I've read him credit Joni Mitchell in the highest possible terms. He said she was sui generis, doing things that nobody else does.
Thank God.
Very good interwiew saw also Roger mcguin but who is the interwiew er?
A brainiac sportscaster
Okay i like sport and music
@@bau6078 I have a playlist the Later interviews....you should find much
Okay good the world now and then
😂I really think that Simon's overthinking the subject! 😂 Also, I LOVE the One Trick Pony album & movie!!!! 👍‼️
Paul's shoes. Are those spats?
Personally i thought it was pretty good, defo watchable
I'm a songwriter, and I find Bob Dylan to be a bit of a tool; Paul Simon is a national treasure. I can't stand the Beatles.
🐰💙🇺🇲🎸🎶✌️
Probably not a very good songwriter
Paul Simon fan boy, 🤪
