Raaja sir is a ONE MAN show. He composes (writes sheet music for every instrument), arranges and conducts as well. He comes from a very humble background from a poor village in Tamilnadu and learnt multiple styles of music in the 60's and 70's from multiple gurus by working 20 hour days. The "playfulness" Rick observed is the signature style of Raaja. As you hear him more you will see. I suggest you react to the "Composers Breath" by Navin Iyer from the album "Nothing but wind". It is about 12-15 mins long. Also you will find that more of Raaja's compositions were recorded in days when equipment was not great. So you have to compensate for the quality of the sound... This was good since it is a modern recording.

"How to name it " and "nothing but wind" are two classics by illayaraja sir.
If you dwell why the name of album is "how to name it" the reference point goes to legend jhon Sebastian Bach (1730)...he did great music....at the same time line in South India, Saint Thyagaraja, muthuswamy dikshitar and Shyama sastry pioneered Carnatic music...
There's one piece "vathapi ganapathim"( which you guys reacted ) there's commonality/ slight similarity with Bach composition and illayaraja sir came up with this album "how to name it" ...there's some more songs (and then we had a talk piece)....with reference to Mozart and others.
Nothing but wind is amazing album
One need to listen complete albums.
This albums, illayaraja sir did when he is doing 50+movies a year in 1984,85,86

Very unfortunate. Isaignani's Symphony No.1 is the outpouring of an iconoclastic composer, whose spontaneous & instantaneous musical creativity goes berserk, whereby, his scores soar incredibly. Such iconic work, probably didn't go well wth the obdurate traditionalists in the West.

Well I don't know if you've listened to the original piece by the maestro... It's got this brilliant shenoy bit a little before the end that elevates this most beautiful piece of music even more.. The transition from that bit to the end is so mesmerizing it should not be missed.

You people are so humble and thats what make you great. Raja sir as we call him is finest composer of our time . He blends western classical with indian music like carnatic, hindustani and folk. Over 1000 movies he did the original score and each movie has some 4 or 5 songs. We can pick 100 best songs in every genre. Every song is so structured with preludes and interludes and some signatures. His works are to be preserved and can be a guide for music lovers, learners.

Rick, You should listen "Thiruvasagam" , Oratorio composed and orchestrated by Ilaiyaraja. Thiruvasagam is a collection of ancient Tamil poems written by Manikkavacakar. They were transcribed partially in English by American lyricist Stephen Schwartz. This is said to be the first Indian oratorio ever. It was performed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra.
