  • Market Street is a major artery in San Francisco, California. It had all kinds of shops, malls, bars, restaurants, and stores that are now closed, It begins at The Embarcadero in front of the Ferry Building and runs southwest through downtown, passing the Civic Center and the Castro District, to the intersection with Portola Drive in the Twin Peaks

I lived in San Fran back in late 80's and early 90's. There where bad spots and the homeless problem was just starting. I used to shop and eat on Market St all off the time. Powell street was always full of people enjoying SF. It's a damn shame to see what has happened to the city now. I fear it will never be a great city anymore. Outside, i saw someone urinating and then some lady yelled at me cause i picked up my suitcase crossing the road. She said " i aint gonna steal yo sh*t , quit fc*ing acting!!! " to my face. This city was doomed. They never bothered addressing the issues of the homeless and drug problems which were festering way back when I lived there in the 90s. Then the pandemic hit and their policies did not help. Boston is a democrat city and isn’t dystopian like SF.

@@plumeria66 SF is subject to a tremendous Boom then Bust cycle . Attracting so much Tech to the City blew up the balloon again and along with its highly paid employees further gentrified the city . When The Pandemic hit Work from Home hit SF harder and has persisted longer than any other city and what we see is a City hollowed out of long term residents and cleared out of its Boom workers . Who will support downtown businesses when no one lives there and the office workers work from home ?

I was taking pictures of closed down theaters in SF about 5 years ago. I was told the Alexandria was going to be torn down and turned in Condos or Apartments. I guess that fell through. Maybe that developer was lucky.
My wife and i were both born in San Francisco in 1960. In 2006 we moved to Elk Grove so we could afford a home.
    We never dreamed that.........
    1. We would never be able to afford to move back.
    2. Not even sure that we would want to move back if we could afford it.
It was such a great city for us. We both had good jobs. When we met, i was taking the N Judah to work and she was on the J Church.
She was in commercial real estate and i was in The Painters Union.
All those building i worked in are 50% empty now.....maybe more 😕😕

They described it as a beautiful, vibrant. colorful, affordable, clean city full of lovely department stores, restaurants, exciting nightclubs, interesting shops of all kinds and wonderful city life! This is insane. And heartbreaking. Heartbreakingly insane.
In '94, on a dare from friends, I shoplifted about $25-30 worth of shampoo and other small items from a grocery store. I was caught and arrested, then later had to go to court to pay ~$500 (~5 times the value of the stolen goods, plus court costs). I was 12. *Twelve* and society expected more from me than *GROWN MEN AND WOMEN* in SF, who can rob stores (and individuals) of up to *$1,000* and face absolutely no consequences. This isn't to say I want a greater presence of gov't police in everyone's business in San Francisco. But someone (preferably the people) needs to stand up and say "enough!" This video is what happens when no one expects anything more from people. There *has* to be a middle ground between too much of a police presence and complete apathy that foments lawlessness and the doom spiral of once-great cities.

Whoa! That was an eye-opener! I lived in San Francisco in the early 1970's, when they built the BART system and laid the cobblestone sidewalks. It was a beautiful, thriving cultural center then. It is shocking to see how far it has fallen. The political, social and environmental degradation is mind-boggling. Every local and state politician for the past 50 years should be held accountable.
Also: Why haven't I seen videos of San Francisco like this until now? I watch the news all the time. I'm a news junkie. I've seen short clips of the Tenderloin, but nothing like this. Our news media is failing us, as well as every other institution. We live in a very weird time. A social apocalypse.

My father grew up in SF.
He lived right on El Camino Del Mar, within a single block of where the Presidio starts. From his bedroom window, he looked down the shoreline of Baker Beach and could see the Golden Gate Bridge clearly. He attended the language school at the Presidio and could have walked home for lunch if that was allowed. He left for the military and then worked his whole life in the intelligence field.
He went back to visit friends and relatives in SF, many times since he graduated high school in the mid 1950s (from George Washington HS).
He said he started to notice major changes as far back as the 80s, but it wasn't until the late 2000s that the city really went to hell in a handbasket.
These days he wouldn't visit if you gave him free airfare.
It's too painful to see what the city has become.

It is the work of the 'Haves' against the 'Have Nots'. You can either afford to live in luxury, or you sleep on the street. Those are your options. It's not R v D or Black v White. It's Rich v Poor & Americans in every major cities on both coasts have already lost the battle. Because they won't throw these wealthy money grubbing criminals out of office. and follow liberal DEM policies.
His (self appointed) “Royal Excellency” Newsolini has expressed for over 20 years this is the goal of the California Democrats - no middle class and the population totally dependent upon the state for everything.

I kinda wish you'd stopped and talked to the tourists waiting for the tram. I'm super curious about what their thoughts were about all the closed stores, or if they found pockets of some sort of value in that area. Or if they were mainly there to do the tram.

That is crazy, San Fran revenues have to be down at least 60-70%. There is basically almost no reason to go to that city. Congratulations progressive democrats keep it up

I think Newsom is allocating dollars from cities that are collecting a lot tax revenues and putting in San Francisco because how can these activists liberals in city hall can afford drugs for the zombies in the streets.

Vote for democrats and this is what always happens. Why is it the voters are so dense? Is the media blowing smoke and hiding the truth of what democrats are doing in Portland, Detroit, Chicago and the rest of California? Do yourself a favor and wake up the liberal idiots who keep believing the lies of democrats help them smell the coffee or leave them in a group of beggars and drug addicts one of their cities and figure out what is going on!

I hate how people blame progressive politics on the issues in sf. Of course the city has been mismanaged but the core issue is nimbyism which is an apolitical topic. Not building enough housing got sf into this mess and the high cost living that resulted from low housing supply caused cost of living to surge. Tech workers became the main demographic the city tried to attract pushing out everyday people. When COVID hit and wfh happened they left because of said high cost of living. This is literally because they didn’t build enough housing and that’s not conservative or liberal that’s just bad governance.

KTVU did a report on how tourists see San Francisco as the most unsafe city to visit in America and interviewed 3 tourists that were victimized. The next day, KTVU interviewed people on Pier 39 to see how they felt and everyone said it was safe. One of the people they interviewed had their car broken into while being questioned.
