“2BRO2B” introduces a nearly perfect dystopian future controlled by the government, a world with no prison, poverty, wars, or diseases. People no longer grow older due to new drugs, but in order to curb the population, for every child born, one person must volunteer to die in the government-run gas chambers. Vonnegut coined the title of the story from the famous “to be or not to be” in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The title refers to the phone number that characters can call to set up their appointment with the gas chambers.
