when you are a master like Maxim Vengerosv you can tell people if their music has emotion or not; when you are a nobody, comments like that only show your jealousy and prejudice.
I disagree - music is meant to move people regardless of their level of knowledge in the field. A non-musician should feel absolutely as right saying “I wasn’t moved by that” or, “I didn’t think it was particularly emotional”, etc. because the purpose of the art form is to speak to them, a "nobody". Understanding how it could have been more engaging is something far more tricky (and it doesn’t just depend on the performer either) - but this is what musicians spend their time doing. Vengerov is able to instruct the student in how to better express the feelings in the music and reveal to him ways to negotiate certain technical demands in ways no untrained musician could. I agree with you in that some of the comments are overdone and, like you say, display "jealousy and prejudice”, but I don’t think this is necessarily all of them.
I'm an absolute beginner with only one year of experience. When I see these & hear these amazing musicians: they ignite a passion within me & I can only hope to become as great 😂
For God's sake, who is the player ? He is already an outstanding violinist and I've never seen him before. God bless his skill and his luck to be guided by sensei Vengerov.
He is definitely a very promising player. Emotions like joy, teasing, anger, and etc. need to be brought out more. Carmen has many moods Sarah Chang plays it so brilliantly and beautifully. There is no one in this day and age that plays like her. No disrespect to other violinists.
That's pretty sharp of you. You must know the room. The reason we cover up the board is because it has a glass front and all the lights and cameras are reflected in it. That would be pretty distracting to our viewers.
Technical machine? The student? He seems pretty into his music, if you ask me. A technical machine wouldn't express his playing through his facial expression or movements.
Just as an add-on: Horowitz (the pianist) hardly moved or showed any physical emotion while he played, particularly in the later years, and yet the music is some of the most human, expressive and poignant I have ever heard. You can check out recordings of him on here.
@dziady1 This "kid" you are talking about is Huang Meng La who incidentally won first prize at the prestigious Paganini Violin Competition 8 years back in 2002. :)
This is not being spiteful. I love to watch violinists show expressions when they play and are really taken by the music. I almost want to ask them if they would like a cigarette after they are finished. Unfortunately , I'm an Irish fiddler and I just can't emotionally show expression when I'm playing Swallowtail Jig, Blackberry Blossom, or Devils Dream. This gentleman is really amazing and so are his students.
There is just too many prejudices here against Asian musicians. Those who are performing in major concert halls are those who excel regardless of their ethnic origins. A lot ofmgraduates even from the
I'm not being argumentative, I genuinely would like to see a video of you playing the violin. I've already posted embarassing videos of myself wishing that I was a musical talent. I enjoy seeing real ones.
its really sad that people think that way isnt it. heifitz, milstein, perlman and many others etc, dont have the face of models and yet they are the greatest violinist of the 20th century.
@Neilusful This is not true. This young man obviously knows his notes, and understands the overall frame of this piece. But only the wiser in experience knows how to truly milk this piece for all its worth. It takes a lot of time to know how much you can do with a piece like this.
i liked the sound. This is supposed to be like a gyspy dance and a fantasy at the same time. 2:00-2:01 i got a chill. It was a great mixture of those two. Also I liked the pause at 2:11-2:12. This also added to brinigng those two factors up.
@gnatural So given my commentary, what would you say if I said that you play with more polish and flair than Huang? And how come I have never heard of you? : D
@dziady1 Paradigmatic ignorance of the Internet. With how expressively and well he plays, I would say that he does "seem to know the slightest thing about the violin and what it can do" and that he does "play with a formed personality." Additionally, Vengerov's instruction of his interpretation is his way of teaching how to "serve the music." This "kid" is at the level at which one can only better him through interpretational nuances as opposed to technical ones.
maxim is a great violinist and teacher, wow! The student is very advanced technically, but I think he played this piece too lyrically. It needed to be more exciting and unpredictable.
On peut tout critiquer Mais à la condition de d’abord poser comme pustulat que techniquement il est monstrueux On est dans le perfectionnement, la masterclass
Although this was VERY good. I think students should watch the opera itself before playing the Fantasie. I think they'd have a better understanding of all the emotions and how to bring out the nuances of the piece.
@winrx im just a little annoyed that you would watch this video just to nit pick on what is already a very impressive performance and challenge his title as the Paganini competition winner. he sounds amazing, just enjoy the video. we always try to find faults in peoples playing instead of just listening first and trying to appreciate what is being done.
What are you talkin' about? Have you ever been at a masterclass? It's not unusual that the student tries what the "master" said and I wouldn't call that incident an interruption at all. Words can only get a student so far.
you dont need a violin to do clases, you dont need to show just to explain, most of great teachers cn teach better without a violi rostal, flesch auer also I think, actually if your way to teah is this ons: hey why dont you try this and just play it is like how I do that
And a masterclass with a "master" showing his own playing is even weaker, because the purpose of a masterclass is not (or shouldn't be) a student imitating the teacher. Nobody needs someone to play something in a certain way just because their teacher played it that way, without real conviction. A musician should understand what he is doing, and do it a certain way because he thinks this is the way to do it, not because their teacher said so.
@maewe. Nah that's kinda slack, I don't think it's technicality, I think it's from being "forced to play" by their parents and plus culturally, asians aren't allowed to express themselves. They are taught to be obedient and well disciplined. By making that kinda comment you're insulting not only asians, but the rest of the world and ultimately musical integrity.
He's not unmusical, people. He's an excellent, excellent player.
the student is so amazing already and yet there's still too much to learn...wonderful...
he is a great young virtuoso, Vengerov is a maestro instead, with a lot of experience on his shoulders, everything he says is gold

dwrmusic yes but a lot of people don’t have taste for music though
very true...

Mengla Huang, it’s also in the description
He is definitely a very promising player.

Carmen has many moods
Sarah Chang plays it so brilliantly and beautifully.
There is no one in this day and age that plays like her.
No disrespect to other violinists.
His name, Mengla Huang. Winner of Paganini competition on 2002 and already a famous soloist on tour!!!
That is a beautiful sounding violin,
Thank you so much!!!!!
Very interesting, Fantastisch!!!!
Gorgeous playing!
I LOVE THIS PIECE!!!!
It is so satisfying when they do and get what vengerov says .

This was heavenly! :D And the sound was so clear, as founatain water...
Amazing. He´s wonderful

What a Professor!
Thanks for the video!
Michele Schottenbauer so pleased you enjoyed it! We have new videos every Wednesday.
I found out Maxim is my father. Im so proud of him.
i love Maxim :)
Great student!

Magnifique
Wow... this is awesome!
its really sad that people think that way isnt it. heifitz, milstein, perlman and many others etc, dont have the face of models and yet they are the greatest violinist of the 20th century.
he looks great in 2:39
when hes smiling
he actually looks tht he likes that part
It's just because the Piano was early

It was recorded in February 08
This is hilarious whenever I watched the chickens in the farm part T-T
Very GOOD 👍🏻👏🏻

Makes me realize how much I suck!
Same here!
Wow he played so awesome, I have to say I liked his chicken farm more
Sensacional
What is Mengla up to these days?
Do these masterclasses take place at a music school or a university somewhere? I'd very much like to know.
Vengerov looks SO much like Count Dracula from Sesame Street here.
@gnatural So given my commentary, what would you say if I said that you play with more polish and flair than Huang? And how come I have never heard of you? : D
Superb.Better than anybody else. You do not need a tutor.
Harish Varma I am sorry but he definitely needs a tutor ... he is good but he has still a lot to learn
there is no such thing as "not needing a tutor". This is not math class you know.
He had a shoulder injury last year so he stopped his violin career :(
But I think he still teaches and dances(
@gnatural Does he have any cds/mp3s coming out? It looks like his last one has been discontinued (per Amazon)... : p
@dziady1 Paradigmatic ignorance of the Internet.

@winrx well he is playing with Maxim Vengerov listening. Wouldn't you be kinda nervous and not playing up to what you normally do?
Mengla Huang looks so different here.
great clip. student is v good
@prajituraCuUnt
Yes he is Tadashi Imai.
他在伦敦的皇家音乐学院,下面的回复有写。
Yes, although I think he spells himself Mengla Huang.
what's the name of this young man?
Mengla Huang
are the student's Chinese?
the pianist is tadashi imai ?
Sweet
Lord
Almighty
how is he an "ass?" he's respectful and brilliant at what he's doing. explain yourself
Damn,still gonna play those vibratos...
nice
what is the name of the piece?
Babak ESM Carmen Fantasy
@ahsusmus of course he does - hes chinese!
Thanks for video...i like best pizzikato movement...JITENDRA KUMAR...INDIA..jzpatelut..
maxim is a great violinist and teacher, wow! The student is very advanced technically, but I think he played this piece too lyrically. It needed to be more exciting and unpredictable.
Fair enough
I hate how the student keeps interrupting Vengerov when he's talking!!
give this guy a better violin .. please =)
I think.....
My opinion no problems in an instrument maybe bow or his bow technique..
true.....i want to see him with his violin showing what he can do better
@winrx its definitely you :D
On peut tout critiquer
Mais à la condition de d’abord poser comme pustulat que techniquement il est monstrueux
On est dans le perfectionnement, la masterclass
o.0 Is he really professional?
@craisslayer it's just a fact that I have witnessed in many years
i thought it was funny when the guy interupted Maxim at 1:34 look at Maxim's facial expression!
post a vid
@Beeffyviolin ???
Although this was VERY good. I think students should watch the opera itself before playing the Fantasie. I think they'd have a better understanding of all the emotions and how to bring out the nuances of the piece.
:40 i wonder what he's thinking about... like contemplating life's biggest obstacles
child of the rich parents
@winrx im just a little annoyed that you would watch this video just to nit pick on what is already a very impressive performance and challenge his title as the Paganini competition winner. he sounds amazing, just enjoy the video. we always try to find faults in peoples playing instead of just listening first and trying to appreciate what is being done.
2:44 "chickens in the farm" lol
@Sortudinho he would cuz that s the only way he has to fake the audience that he is musical. The expression is on the bow not in the face.
He should teach how to play and make faces
@The930706 haha. areumdawoyo :D
yang dong geun playing the violin lol
I dont understand his musical sens....Very good technic though
What are you talkin' about? Have you ever been at a masterclass? It's not unusual that the student tries what the "master" said and I wouldn't call that incident an interruption at all. Words can only get a student so far.
th-cam.com/video/oVOu7jFUshs/w-d-xo.html
He definitely learned how not to play like "chickens on a farm". See 2:07
Vendo esse vídeo, me sinto o cocô do cavalo do bandido caído. rsrsrsrs
Then you want to watch a competition, and not a masterclass.

Very good skill. But lacks narrative ability. I think that's what Vengerov tried to convey. This is a dramatic piece, needs to tell it in a big way.
@maewe. Nah that's kinda slack, I don't think it's technicality, I think it's from being "forced to play" by their parents and plus culturally, asians aren't allowed to express themselves. @Neilusful far east Asians.......
wtf let he do is hown technique
por mucho que se lo propongan los asiáticos no ponen alma en la música...al menos la mayoría...eso sí, mucha técnica
Kinda too robotic for my taste. He's technically awesome though!
