WTF Happened to Eyes Wide Shut?

- Eyes Wide Shut is Stanley Kubrick's haunting final masterpiece. The famous director passed away just a few months before the film opened, and indeed in the years since, it's been one of his most divisive efforts. Kubrick's first film since 1987's Full Metal Jacket, it opened with a flurry of controversy, as the studio had to insert CGI figures into an orgy sequence to avoid getting the film an NC-17 rating. The first teaser, which featured its married stars, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, cavorting nude to Chris Isaak's "Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing" was the public's clue to the fact that Kubrick's meditation on sexual relationships would be controversial. The film received a mixed reaction when it first came out, with some critics saying it was a masterpiece while others dismissed it. It's still one of Kubrick's most divisive films.
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, which is edited by Jeremy Hamley, and written and narrated by Mathew Plale, we dig into how tortured a production this was. Kubrick's film was shot for fifteen months, making it one of the longest, consistent movie shoots of all time. Kubrick shot and reshot sequences, even leading co-star Harvey Keitel to quit in disgust over the number of takes required. Jennifer Jason Leigh was also replaced. The shoot sidelined Cruise's career for several years, with him not making any movies in 1997 or 1998 as he was busy with the shoot, and many, retrospectively, think the film may have played a role in ending Cruise and Kidman's marriage, with them divorcing less than two years after the movie was finally released.
Despite everything, it remains Kubrick's highest-grossing film, if perhaps his most widely disliked one. We'll dig into the tortured shoot in WTF Happened to Eyes Wide Shut, and let us know in the comments what you think of this entry into the Kubrick canon.

Kubrick always tried to make you think. He didn’t just want to make a movie, he wanted to create an experience that made you think differently. The fact that he died before the release of this movie is pretty poignant. He basically ratted out Hollywood on his way out the door.
An abusive narcissist too
Which is why we ask..."Was he or wasn't he assassinated?🤔🤔🤔"

This was the first movie from Kubrick I've ever seen
And even after watching his other movies, EWS remains my favorite of his filmography
My dad who was a big Kubrick fan thought EWS was a disappointment.
Full Metal Jacket is a must and The Shining.
@@michaeladams5636yor dad was right. I'm a big Kubrick fan and the movie sucks. Or maybe I'm just not 'intellectual' enough for it😅😅😅😅
@@dishsoap1I think Full Metal Jacket and Shining are my favourites.
It’s a good movie but nowhere near Kubrick’s best. It might actually be his worst if I’m being honest.
I've read a couple of times (which might or might not be true) that the movie had 20 minutes of footage removed in the end. Removed and destroyed.
I've always wondered, if all the gatherers wore masks, why the secrecy, why were they willing to kill to preserve their secret? So they had sex with prostitutes... big whoop!
The rumor goes that, in the "lost footage", Kubrick wanted to portray the TRUE things that took place at the gatherings depicted in Eyes Wide Shut. The insane secrecy an willingness to kill would be justifiable if the gatherers used... children.
There are several documentaries where actual victims come forward and claim that they were sexually abused at the secret gatherings as children by people who believed that abusing children would give them "special powers".
It was suggested that Kubrick has witnessed one of these gatherings and, because he wanted to put it under the light, his death might not have been natural.
If the contents of the "lost footage" was a real thing, the disappearance of their daughter in the end of the movie would get the whole new meaning.
Who knows?....
Well it was suggested by the costume shop owner with the grooming of his daughter to the two Asian men. I’ve also watched another video that was more of a wild conspiracy that Bill and Alice was part of the mansion party and was grooming their daughter to be a part of it.
The truth is far darker and Kubrick may have shed too much light on it. He certainly would have been aware of how truly evil that world is.
There were specific scenes alluding to certain people who 'they' (synagogue of satan) didn't want the public having knowledge of that were ORDERED to take out but Stanley refused and subsequently didn't live to see his movie premiere.

One of the best films of the 1990s. A film that feels like a dream and probably is a dream.
This and the Ninth Gate.
Seems Victorian to me.
No. It only had a nightmare atmosphere cause that's what it feels like when you realize the things really going on among the powerful people. The studios wouldn't have let the movie get green light had it been more straightforward. It had to be written as vague as possible and the movie company probably still edited more away. Epstein is barely a tip of a huge iceberg and it's connected to so much more.
Martin Scorcese once gave his top ten list of the '90s and placed it at number 2. His number one was a chinese movie made in 89, but got wide release in the '90s...so he kinda cheated lol.
Funny enough, The Book is called "Dreamnovella"
Ziegler’s conversation with Bill in the study at the end has some of the best dialogue I’ve seen in a movie. One of my favorite movies.
Absolutely. This has to be Tom Cruise’s best performance as a dramatic actor
The dialogue is that scene is great, but, just as importantly, so too is Sydney Pollack's acting. The mannerisms and physical things he does in that scene are what really sells it.

One of them. Cruise is a good actor with a good script and in the hands of a master like Kubrick. He was also great in Risky Business, a film that surprised me with its depth.
@@A_Final_Hit
I am so glad Keitel left the production. He is great, of course, but he just wasn't right for that role.
@@A_Final_Hit Fully agree. Originally I was disappointed Keitel didn't stick around (then the EWS movie poster could've read Cruise, Kidman, Keitel & Kubrick) but now I can't imagine Harvey doing a better job than Sydney Pollak. Who'd have thought a director could act so well?
When I was studying at film school we had a whole course dedicated to Stanley Kubrick and his filmography. For three weeks we would meet and talk about his movie and then watch them chronologically in a small one screen theater. Maybe it's the fact that Eyes Wide Shut concluded the whole course but for some reason it made the biggest impact on me, despite seeing it twice before. It's in my eyes the best Kubrick movie...it's his essence as a filmmaker removed from the grandiose stories of science-fiction, horror or war movies...captured in the most basic setting, which makes all the themes shine through even more.
Most sacred setting being reality.😂
I was a 20 year old looking to just watch some T&A in the theaters. I ended up LOVING this movie. I never took my eyes off the screen. That’s how mesmerizing the movie was.
Kubrick showed a cut of the film to the sudio. He stood outside the theatre, pacing up and down, saying "They're going to kill me"
But at the end, it was his sick heart that killed him hehehe A little too obsessed with perfection, that must add bad stress.
And so they did. Seriously, "hart attack" my ass... Doctors say everything if you bribe them bard enough, when someone was "neutralized" who would become dangerous to.... certain people in power and influence. Remember.... EVERYONE knew about the things Harvey Weinstein or Jeffrey Epstein did... and they all looked the other way or participated... and PROTECTED such individuals.

I saw it recently. It is engaging and it grabs your attention. It is definitely one of the more interesting works of Stanley Kubrick, and it is not bad as the critics or audience say. Remember when nobody liked The Shining? Stanley's work is always interesting no matter what quality.
One of the problems with this movie was its ad campaign because it sold you on some sort of erotica movie, there was a sense in the campaign you were going going to see hot sex scenes with Kidman and Cruise and as it turned out it felt like Kidman was barely and most of it was just Cruise walking down sidewalks and hallways.
To repeat..
Victorian.
@@marknewton6984 How simple of you
I think part of the point was to challenge whoever wants to see such things in a film by showing them the sinister nature of some sex and its consequences. Hence tricking them into watching something that would unexpectedly challenge them.
@@vmusket5464 that sounds like a generous view of the ad campaign. One could also say they were trying to get buzz on the film because the ads were cut before Kubrick died. Or a they just didn't know how to sell the film they had.
@@stephennootens916 Kubrick was involved in marketing and planning the release date before the film was finished and before he died
Eyes Wide Shut is one of my all time favourite films that gets better the more I watch it.
It really is like that, you notice more and more each time you watch it, the subtleties and so on.
I think Kubrick's passing before it was actually completed was the biggest problem. He did not complete post-production, his "estate" did. Many people consider it unfinished.
The acting always felt weird to me in Kubrick films. Idk what it is I can’t put my finger on it. I always felt like they always just focused on making sure they read the lines right instead of it feeling real. Natural
Cause they are trying to ipen your eyes to the corruption of the elite
It is a masterpiece. It touch our unconsious desires and fears that are suppressed by society and superego and i think thats the point of this movie.
Victorian ambience.
I agree with this statement.
Regarding Jennifer Jason Leigh's original casting in the film: she wasn't just initially cast but then passed over for another actress, she actually filmed all the scenes for her character, but when those later reshoots were required (mentioned in this video), she was no longer available and so had to be recast.
Jennifer is one Great actress!
Yes, this actually happens a lot of times for various reasons. Actor-swapping and reshoots are pretty common. And in many cases the scenes were actually shot but then discarded and quite literally destroyed because they were not needed anymore.
More like-"Was Kubrick actually assassinated after this movie or NO?" Also I love the man's work..but this is absolutely on my list of 'Only Once'
In my opinion this is Stanley Kubrick's best film; and his work more complex than him !!!
And there are many things that remain without plausible explanation; and there is a whole atmosphere of mystery that hovers throughout the film.
I love how this film is so mysterious; Kubrick died after releasing this film and Kubrick already had satanic references on The Shining, To Understand More i did research and then knew something i think i didn't was supposed to know, Theorists says Kubrick was in a Cult and The Cult made him famous in change for his soul; He after that became famous, but then the Cult did something wrong and Kubrick was furious; Then Kubrick got out from the cult and revealed it's secrets and died after... This is really mysterious, and i hope this is not true
It is true. Reality is stranger than fiction
I love this film. He was a genius at his craft. I believe he added mystery to his films to allow others to draw their own unique interpretations about his films.
No mystery there. I wonder if he was part of a club
Kubrick was a gift to the world. I wish he would have done more than 13 films, but quality over quantity.
still the deleted 23 minutes haven't recovered to this day

Nothing much. This was Stanley Kubrick's haunting final masterpiece for Warner Bros. in 1999 and in my opinion, Eyes Wide Shut was the
director's highest grossing film.
On one level this is a movie about a strained marriage... But obsession, imagination and confusing one's imagined expectations with reality; dreams vs real life; seem to be the main gist. Nothing Dr Bill sets out to do (every attempt to cheat on his wife) comes to fruition. People criticise this when I think it's actually the point.
Kubrick's wife said it's a film about fear and Stanley's metaphor about filmmaking itself; the struggle to bring a creative idea to fruition and the fear of not being able to accomplish what's in the artist's head. Kubrick was a notorious perfectionist, possibly obsessive compulsive about details, and would famously take years between projects and his productions would continue way over schedule. I love that the Harford's apartment is literally a re-creation of Kubrick and his wife's Manhattan studio apartment in the 1950s and 60s. The paintings on the wall are Christiane Kubrick's own art work from that time. A few of her paintings also appear in A Clockwork Orange.
Say what you will about EWS, I'm glad he finally got to make it as the book was obviously near and dear to him. The fact that he died only a month after post-production wrapped and a few weeks before his 70th birthday is sucky coincidence. Fuelled a lot of paranoid conspiracy thoeries.
Thank you for a sane and balanced comment!

Kinda crazy to remember that this was Kubrick's last movie. Still great bit he left this life still making people question and attached.
Definitely not a movie for everyone, but I think it ended Kubrick’s career on a high note. It’s stylish in its production design and cinematography, Tom and Nicole deliver quality work under the strictness of Kubrick (though their marriage was essentially on the outs by this point), the score is mysterious and the themes are thought-provoking

I never realized this was released AFTER Kubrick had died.
I always heard he HAD finished it, but the studio cut out twenty minutes.
When will you guys do a WTF Happened to Transformers (2007)?
To this day, I consider this Kubricks greatest film
Always thought it felt like should be taking place in the 1926 period when the book was written - the seriousness of a woman having fantasies, the jealousy plot point, and the existence of a costumed secret society would make more sense. Maybe it was considered as a period piece but would have doubled the budget.
This has always been my feeling also. It just didn't make psychological sense as a movie about modern people living in 1990s New York City. The idea that Cruise's character would be so shaken by his wife's confession of a fantasy felt a bit absurd to me. In the 1920s people were just out of the Victorian era. But by the 1990s, Western societies had already been thru the sexual revolution, so Cruise's character seemed unbelievable.
Yes that’s exactly what I thought - being so shaken by his wife’s confession was also the main thing that lost me.
Well, the wife did tell him that she would have left him and the kid if the other man had wanted her for one night. Something is wrong, there.
@@MaximusNYC Bro it's 2023 now and if my gf told that to me I'd still have a sleepless night. Loyalty and love mean a lot to some people, it's not even the fact that she had a fantasy it's the fact that she explained it in detail to him and literally told him she was about to leave him that night just like this other guy said.
It still feels like a dream. Now its not even there in Netflix. Even feels more like a dream 😢
Kubrick is the 🐐
While it's not Kubrick's finest work, any film that isn't formulaic and makes you actually think is a "win" in my book. Even though this is a baseless opinion, I've always felt that we didn't get to see the true final form of Eyes Wide Shut. My guess is the really juicy sex/ satanic ritual stuff was cut out. Perhaps hitting too close to home, for certain Hollyweird execs.

It might not have been a case of R. Lee Ermey being "full of it." He and Kubrick remained friends after Full Metal Jacket and it's possible Kubrick might've been worried about how Eyes Wide Shut was coming together, then confided in Emery about how he was feeling at the time. For all we know, maybe Kubrick had the same concern over all of his movies at one point or another. (Well, except maybe Spartacus. He admits that was a job for a paycheck and it was really Kirk Douglas's production more than it was his.)

Stanley kubrick was killed by WBs cus he wouldn't cut 30mins from the movie that revealed too much about the powers that be, even tom & Nicole knew he was murdered & tom was terrified in those interviews, so in the end WB did remove the 30mins that kubrick wouldnt back down from doing but instead of putting the 30mins they cut in a film vault they burnt it, totally destroyed every copy, what was so dangerous to the establishment that it couldnt be seen by anyone, these party's actually took place, there are photographs of these freemason illuminati sex orgy party's, it's like when WBs killed heath ledger to increase ticket sales for the dark knight plus win an posthumous oscar cus comic book movies dont win oscars, how many more tickets did they sell after heath was murdered but they shot them selves in the foot cus they were only thinking of the short term, if they let him live they would of had a cash cow on their hand for future movies with the real joker, they killed their golden goose, joker was supposed to be in dark knight rises, isnt it funny how heath's last film was a terry gillian movie about a man who sells his soul to the devil thats full of the all seeing eye & pyramids symbolism, gillian who is well known for having his movies shut down halfway through filming, it was a message to let people in the know that it was a murder made to look like death from a spoon of nytol, night nurse, over the counter sleeping syrup.

@@User-kv5bn4dxnThank you for your response. I understand the hypothesis. But it is not convincing to me. An organization powerful enough to murder someone without apparent consequence simply for challenging and exposing the elites would have the power to prevent that movie from being released.
