I can’t believe a video of someone shoveling horse shit is making me nostalgic. Someone apparently asked if it smells, and my opinion would be yes, it smells like heaven. Maybe six or seven years after college, for half a second I worked at a Chicago horse-and-carriage joint called Noble Horse. In addition to offering tourists carriage-rides around Streeterville and parts of the Magnificent Mile - not quite over to Rush Street, thank God - they also had a kinda-sorta renaissance-fair-styled “jousting”-themed dinner-and-a-show, and improbably they taught dressage to some rich people’s kids. I think the horses hated every moment of everything they did in the city, but they did get to take a week or two off every month to go run around a farm downstate. I can’t speak for the farm, but the operation in Chicago was an all-around horrible and corrupt place, management created a culture of thieving and predation which trickled down through every aspect of the enterprise, even down to the carriage drivers. But boy, was it fun currying the horsies. I became something of a total horse-girl of a boy while I was there. Kali in particular and I formed a bond, when she was in a mood I was one of only a few people she’d let near her to lift her little paws and loosen out the crud built up between her shoes and her widdle hoofies. There was a whole community of undocumented Mongolian migrants who gravitated around that place … if you ever want to meet people from Mongolia, apparently haunt your local horse-and-carriage operation. Thankfully Chicago banned the whole practice around a decade ago. Imagine being a beautiful, strong, free horse thundering over hill and plain … and then one day someone constrains your field of view with blinders, straps a massive heavy cart to you, and forces you to walk around on asphalt surrounded by honking traffic for hours every night, with your nose constantly stuck in an s.u.v.’s fume-belching tailpipe. Fuck that whole industry.
