The oud has its own tuning. This man is capable of playing the oud like an Andalusian guitar from the Ummayyad period of Arab hegemony over Spain. I have heard one recording before from the Oxfam Arabia CD, probably the one most beautiful piece of "guitar" music I have ever heard. "Min Ashur Ila Ishbiliya". Listen to that before you die. لكثرِ ما سمعت موسيقى صار يقرفني الطرب والثبات في العزف وخشونة العود ، في بداية الأمر كنت مثلك احب التطريب الذي يعتمد على الصعودوالنزول فقط مع خشونة مؤذية للإذن ، أنا مدين لمنير بشير وجميل بشير ونصير شمة في الكثير ، ما هذا الصفاء في صوت العود وكأن العود بلبل مسجون واطلقوا سراحه لواحة خضراء ... انصحك بأن تسمع العود كثيراً وتترك خشونة السنباطي وفريد وهذا العويل المكرر وتستمع لمؤلفات موسيقية لهؤلاء الكبار .. معلومة ما يقوم به السنباطي وفريد وعبادي طريقة عادية يمكن لأي عازف مبتدأ ان يعزف مثلهم والراست بشكل عام جميل كلحن والا لا يمكن سماع صراخ العود الخشن من اصابعهم بصراحة !
I studied with Naseer. his Ouds are made either by Iraqi Maker: Ya'rub Jobaili or the Egyptian maker: Mohammed Ali. I can't tell which oud is this. I guess it's the one by Ya'rub cause I remember it was louder than average ouds and this one is.
The pick you are talking about used to be a feather of a bird in the early ages of the instrument. Noadwas a long pick similiar to the feather is commonly used nowadays. Salam.
@tonydven Both this taqsim and indian ragas are improvised pieces based upon a certain scale or collection of notes and phrases. But there is really no way of determining which came "first", as both traditions have been developing essentially for the entirety of their respective civilizations' existence, going back thousands of years, and they have both influenced each other at some point.
'EXCESSIVE TECHNIQUE' . The Oud, (unlike the guitar for example) was not built to sustain such powerful tweaking , bending and chord rhythm playing, so some of the notes he hits are off key. I've always loved the Iraqi school of playing (Muhyiddine Haidar) , and I love Naseer's playing, I just wished he'd stay away from excessive fret neck acrobatics.
noobi core it’s shameful such Ustaz like Nasseer that he would resort to these meaningless acrobatics, at the end he commits himself to off key notes, a good instrumentalist should Never hit an off key note. Impressive performance over substance, it’s an issue,which reminds me of Al Demiola . Simon Shaheen is the model , I say it with most modesty

I don't really know if there are any similarities between them but Taqsim means improvised, the track you've just listened to is totally improvised.

in the oud realm, pick means any plastic peice can do the job. yes, it is usually taller and slimer than the guitar pick.

I can see a pick in shamma's right hand but it looks more like a small narrow stick than a pick as I think of a guitar pick. Is this correct?
