    Only one disagreement with your review - buy from a local dealer! Bezos wont help you with setup, or anything else. He doesn't need your business. (yes, I am a Naga dealer)

    I have this cartridge and can confirm that it is top notch and well worth the price especially if you have an equally good phono pre to let it shine.

      @@nathanielFalck not much time with the BL so far, the MP110 and 200 have about the same weight easy swap outs on my Technics, but the BL is lighter and requires an adjustment to the tone arm, so i haven't been using it... i love the 110 the 200 is fatter/thicker sound, i can only imagine the 300/500 are that much incrementally better

    Hey Dale😊 Just found this by accident and then went to Steve Hoffman to research and found you there😊 I was interested until I found the only source for a replacement stylus is more than the cartridge. I think I’m going to save for a Soundsmith Carmen. They will rebuild for $200 when needed. I’d still like to hear what you think after another 3 months. New subscriber here

    I was not aware of this one. How is it with IGD and tracking? The AT MLs seem to be the best at those two things although seem to lack in other areas thet the nagaoka might excel at.

    I have been using the JT1210 on my 1210GAE and have been hugely disappointed with it
    It is lacking a lot of detailing at the frequency extremes. Very forward sounding and somewhat uninspiring to listen to.
    At the price they sell them for you can get the Audio technica AT33EV moving coil which blows this out of the water and have a £100 or more to spend on vinyl. My 2M blue can match it for sound and tracks the sibilence without issue.
    The Nagaoka has difficulty tracking sibilence without splashing and mistracking. Also the treble detail is seriously lacking. No air around the instruments and where is the richness. Also I'm not convinced that it is a nude elliptical I think it is bonded on to the boron cantilever which to me is crazy.
    However I thank you for the video and taking the time to raise the profile of this cart.

    • @archifi9978

      I'm sorry you had some disappointing experiences. The 33ev and the 2m Blue are both fantastic cartridges

  • @steviesteve750
    @steviesteve750 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've already decided I prefer the Nagaoka flavour (a technics 270C with a black diamond nude elliptical) ove the AT vm95ML, so am thinking about this or something similar as an upgrade over the 270C. I suppose i could get the boron stylus for the 270C, but suspect that's overkill for the cartidge.....

    This cart looks interesting, especially the fact that it was developed for the 1200. Too bad it's so ugly though. I also don't understand the recommended capacitance loading, it's 100pF. How the hell are you supposed to acheive that? Most turntable (arm cabling + RCAs) are around 100-150pF. And an average phono stage adds another 100pf or more often 220pf. I've got a phono pre-amp with a zero capacitance setting, but that's more like 50pF in practice and not actually pf. If the cart is flat at 100pF it will probably have a treble spike at 200pf (or do you get a treble dip when you ad capacitance? I keep forgetting).

    • @archifi9978
      @archifi9978  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The whole Capacitance thing is way over my head. I basically look online to see who else is using my Cartridge Tone arm combo.

    • @steviesteve750
      @steviesteve750 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adding capacitance rolls the treble off. There are phase changes to consider too, the cartridge is a generator so basically an inductor in reverse. Matching the cartridge impedance and load capacitance is the challenge, there will be an electrical resonant frequency somewhere, the advantage of MC (low impedance) puts this way above the audible spectrum. Lord knows how the maths works, but that's the general principle.

    • @archifi9978
      @archifi9978  ปีที่แล้ว

      All Nagaoka cartridges state a stylus life of 200 hours. On all the forums, everyone says they last as long as any other sylus 1000-1500 hours. I've had mine a year and still sounds great

  • @edguyrocks5865

    Nice review. I have had my AT-440ml now since summer 2020, thinking about another cart to try. Love it, love the microline. I know it's basically your vm540ml but you don't need as high of tracking force. I've owned the Nag 110, Sumiko Blue Point #2, Denon DL110, Sumiko Olympus, and Ortofon Concorde DJs. using a 1200mk3d myself. I get a little freaked out about Nag stuff cuz they recommend stylus changes at 150-200 hours. That's pretty damn quick. I understand your concerns about MC carts, but some Hana carts I've heard guys over 1500 hours and still going. But yeah, I broke the stylus on my Sumiko Blue Point #2(used) and I was sick to my stomach. All I could do was either pay and send it to someone for a retip, which I didn't do. Just sold the cart. Got decent money for it for not having a stylus. Anyways...been looking cuz the AT microline stuff has its advantages, but sometimes sounds damn near cd like and 2Dimensional. Anyways...sorry to ramble. I'll check some of your other videos

    • @archifi9978
      @archifi9978  ปีที่แล้ว

      On the forums, people say all Nagaoka cartridges have that 200 hour thing recommendation. However, most say they go 1000-1500 with no problem on the other Nagaokas. How did you like the Denon?

      @@archifi9978 Thanks...I didn't care for the DL-110. It was okay...I only bought it for $150, so it was worth a shot. Kinda cold sounding. Clean and cold. I shoulda bought a MP-200 the other day. Coulda had a good deal on one...about 1/2 price with 90 hours on it. I'm kicking myself for not pulling the trigger just to try one.

    • @archifi9978
      @archifi9978  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@QoraxAudio You are correct, however, one can go beyond "factory distortion" levels without noticing much difference due to such gradual wear and without record groove damage, assuming stylus is not damaged. All depends on how the stylus is set up and general condition of records etc. I'm big on having a USB microscope to inspect from time to time. If one plays 5 hours of records a week, with a 500 hour life, that's a good two years.

    • @QoraxAudio
      @QoraxAudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@archifi9978 Yeah, a microscope is definitely the best way to determine stylus wear.
      I found that the cleanliness of the stylus and record have just as much impact on stylus lifespan as the cartridge setup.

    1:20 nope, that JT-1210 also came with the 1210GAE turntables that shipped to Europe.
    What setup did you use for testing this cartridge?
    What loading did you preferred most?

    • @archifi9978
      @archifi9978  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was not aware of that. Thanks for the info. There was a limit of 1000 units (supposedly). One would think with such a small batch, Technics would have included the cartridge inside the US as well. I used a 1200GR TT, Elac PPA-2 Phono Pre, PS Audio BHK Line Stage, First Watt J2 amp, Zu Omen Def Speakers. The cartridge was set up using the standard Technics overhang gage. Protractor disc (Baerwald ) and clear plastic gage for Azimuth and tonearm height (body height approx 19mm). I have the rake angle slightly tail up. I have 3 settings I generally switch the Tone Arm height dial one for 140 gr, 180, gr and 200 gr records. I use the standard MM load of 47k of the Elac

    • @QoraxAudio
      @QoraxAudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@archifi9978 Ah yes, 47k is default load resistance for most MM cartridges, but I meant capacitive load, because in most cases, that's what makes the high frequencies a bit more or less pronounced with an MM cartridge.
      Body height of 19mm is nice, because I found that these new Technics turntables have issues getting the tonearm parallel to the record surface when using low cartridges like those Audio Technica ones.
      I really liked the stock rubber Technics mat, so I specifically bought a thicker NOS 6mm version of that mat so that I can use lower cartridges at the correct VTA lol
