Hey, ya'll! I'm glad people are really appreciating this video because it took a lot to make this video possible. Honestly, i haven't spent as much time on a video as I did this one. Video essays are NOT easy to make hahaha but maybe it was also because it was my first time.
It's just generally hard to gauge really how this kind of thing will do, but thanks to 98% of ya'll leaving constructive criticism, I can def see which direction to take this series!
I was a band kid throughout high school (and through drum corps), I studied music composition in college, BUT if i'm being honest, a lot of my understanding of music was not academic, it was definitely more figuring it out on my own through playing music and through the wonderful world of youtube. One of my favorite youtubers before i made my channel (and still to this day) is 8-bit music theory. He has a really cool basic music theory video that explains basic terms and concepts, some of which ive covered you can check out here if you've never learned anything at all ---> th-cam.com/video/QkiJYzDR6ho/w-d-xo.html (Also subscribe and check out all of his videos, he's seriously very good at what he does
I've already started working on future videos. I had beginning sketches written for other topics that are more centered around music theory terms and ideas and how they are applied in punk-related genres, and I am going to hone in on those, so instead of covering a single song with many different terms, i can focus solely more on one term and give lots of examples from various pieces of music.
I'm real stoked to expand on this, but i'll be on the road selling merch for slingshot dakota for all of June, so I can't really start recording and production on the next episode until July, so hang in there, ya'll!
SPEAKING OF MERCH, plenty of skatune network merch is available here www.skatunenetwork.bigcartel.com and if you wanna support me so i can focus solely on making this channel better, I am on patreon right here www.patreon.com/skatunenetwork
    Thank you all, again!!

This video definitely took a whole lot of time to edit, i give huge props to all the video essay channels that I follow, especially when the person who records also edits!!
If you wanna help support me so I can expand more and do more of series like this, then check out my patreon and webstore
A cool perk on my patreon will be access to the written essay of these videos, so when I do more of these, you have the written out versions to access, as well as being able to suggest topics and songs for me to break down! www.patreon.com/skatunenetwork
Merch just looks really good and I have cool stuff on sale right now, like the skatune network summer merch line! www.skatunenetwork.bigcartel.com

Roger Lima is a God-tier bassist. It's rare to hear bass that's super busy and all over the place, yet fun and upbeat. I think my favorite bass lines by him are Automatic and Throw the Brick. The bass in the breakdown section of the latter song makes me hyped every time I hear it.

Good job, man... Love this video... I'm a bass player, even though I've been playing with a blues-funk band for like almost 20 years now, but 90's ska was where I began learning the instrument... My friends, who are mostly funk-jazz players and well educated musicians, mostly underestimate ska punk musicians... Here's the thing I want to share, back then when I couldn't afford music courses, I learned a great deal of bass techniques from listening to The Specials, especially 'Nite Klub'... So, my friends would brag about how they learned all the cats like Chuck Rainey [doublestops], Larry Graham [slapping and popping], Rocco Prestia [ghostnotes]... But, trust me, I didn't know who those guys were and names of the techniques, but I could already play all those techniques by only learning 'Nite Klub'... I drove my friends nuts when I made the transition to playing funk and jazz music and adapted easily [except that I had a hard time learning to read those damn music sheets]... But anyway, thank you very much for this video... Here's a request from me, please make another video like this on drums... For my taste, [early] Goldfinger, Suicide Machines and Voodoo Glow Skulls have some brutal interpretations of classic reggae and straight punk rock rhythms... Again, thanks man!

    • @simongunkel7457
      @simongunkel7457 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I thought the opposite, the video did a good job looking at basic theory, but it could have gone further. Things like V vs. 5th or why a V7 wants to resolve to I aren't particular to the genre and you could pick them up from any intro to music theory on YT. Something like the way the backbeat is used in Ska and Skapunk is something you won't find anywhere and the video just mentions it in passing. If you play bass in punk, you should absolutely seek out anything on theory, because while Punk has a very stripped down approach to guitar, this puts the burden on the bass to do more things (or to put that more positively: it gives the bass a lot more space to shine). Basically for the past couple of hundred years western music has mainly consisted of two melodies in a dialogue of sorts. In the Renaissance people tried to go up to 4, but it turns out that people can't really follow more than two as melodies and the middle voices tend to become sort of harmonic mush for listeners. In rock the two melodies tend to be vocals and guitar. In Punk it's vocals and bass. In Jamaican music it's also usually been vocals and bass, from rocksteady through Ska and Reggae. Arguably that made the whole Genre of Skapunk possible - you wouldn't be able to mesh Ska with say Power Metal, because you either drop the melody in the bass and lose a key part of Ska or the guitar wanking that is essential to power metal.

    Great video man!
I think that for the shred the gnar™ part, the ending B-D# is not only for an authentic cadence, but the chromatic lead to the root of the next chord is a very satisfying sound in walking bass lines. My music teacher's philosophy for writing walking bass lines is rather than just arpeggiate the chord or walk stepwise to the next one, he always insists on having a chromatic lead, and I find that it works great.
Also, for the prechorus part, I don't know if you could consider the A chord a secondary dominant; the most likely explanation for that part (in my opinion) is that they temporarily modulate to the key of A, which would explain the D natural; for the G natural, however, I have found other tabs saying that it is supposed to be sharp. Either way, I think it would be more appropriate to classify this part as a modulation rather than as a secondary dominant because the A chord is not dominant to E.
Apart from that, however, I think your video was great! It illuminates a part of ska punk that is not frequently explored, and I really loved your description of retrograde! This video is really inspiring for people who want to get into music theory through music that they really love.

This was great. I’d love to see more. How about some Fugazi? I don’t know much about music theory, but I’ve always thought there are some interesting things going on in songs like “No Surprise” or “Last Chance for a Slow Dance.” Thanks for showing that these genres are worth analyzing.

Dude great video! I hope people understand what great info you just gave us on this song. Very well and easily explained considering the complexity involved.
You might wanna check out some drive like jehu (yank crime) or no knife (riot for romance). Maybe not for a video but for personal pleasure.

Excellent analysis! I'm a novice when it comes to music theory, so a lot of technical stuff takes me a little while to figure out, but I think you did a very good job of breaking it down to manageable chunks :D
Since you asked, would you consider doing a quick overview of how different ways the brass section works in a ska composition? I grew up listening to 90s Argentinian ska bands, and I'm really interested in learning more about what the brass sections big and small do within the genre (in musical terms; since intuitively the answer is "sound fucking awesome and make you jump off your seat and onto your feet" :P)
Thank you so much for all your hard work!!!

Great Video! I’d love something like this explaining 3 chord Punk. It’s something I’d never really understood.

Two of my favorite things in the world - ska and music theory. I’m all about this.
