nidhogg gameplay (1-handed sword): valheim ashlands

  • this weapon is in a weird spot, kind of for the same reasons i wrote about the dual axes. there are a lot of slash options in ashlands: silver sword, mistwalker, dual axes, slayer sword, nidhogg sword, dyrnwyn sword.
on top of that, slash damage and blunt damage are completely equal in the ashlands; there are no enemies that have different resistances to these damage types, except the lava blob, which has blunt vulnerability (doesnt matter, this mob will detonate itself). so, the nidhogg sword also competes with the flametal mace.
most players prefer swords for their unlimited cleave on light attacks. this is somewhat valuable in the ashlands because, although ashlands is relatively flat and open, there are areas with a lot of clutter (trees, rocks, buildings). having unlimited cleave helps keep your damage consistent, instead of scraping against objects. sword secondary also does a little more damage than mace, and i think has a little more reach.
however, ashlands introduces a new need for knockback against 2 star warriors, including the mini boss lord reto, because these enemies are incredibly tenacious and difficult to parry. chain knockback with a one handed mace like frostner or flametal mace is a very strong counter to this difficult enemy type. for that reason, i think maces have the edge in this biome.
so, despite being a competent weapon for virtually all jobs, this weapon is simultaneously irrelevant because of all the other slash options, and being eclipsed by the mace for general duty. hence why i describe it as being in a weird spot. use this over the mace only if you have much higher sword skill coming into the ashlands.

I actually like the 1h swords in Ashlands. One nice niche for Nidhogg/Mistwalker is clearing the voltures who bodyblock you while you're kiting a massive mob pack around. Twin axes can do it as well but sometimes they miss if the volture is hovering a bit too high. Unlimited cleave is better in Ashlands than any other biomes - Warriors and Askvins' AI just charges you rather than surround you, so they are bunched up more often than not, and in obstructed areas Warriors would politely take the long way around fallen logs, rocks, chest high walls while Askvin's attacks are blocked by geometry, while you don't have to suffer the damage penalty. Mace is my choice for 2 star Warriors, but as a general tool the swords' shorter time to kill allows you to simplify the battlefield and puts you in less 'oh shit' situation, though that effect is rarely noticed.

So idk whether to comment this here or an older video of urs but does the sword dodge exploit thing still work? I’ve been unable to get it to work since the ashlands update.

i am not sure about the roll double secondary combo specifically, as i never really used that. but the regular primary and secondary block cancel combos work the same for me, like for sword and one handed mace.

@@sittingforgetting9907 yup I like those if I get the chance but they’re very committal animations… ya see I’m a bit of an idiot I like seeing if I can parry into the double special combo and kill the mob. Do I get punished for not mathing correctly? ALL THE TIME. Do I still do it anyways cause I like seeing the health bar shrink from half or more to nothing? Ofc monkey neuron activation type beat xD. Nonetheless if u get a chance to try I’d love to know if you have any success. I’m convinced it’s possible I just don’t know if the order or timing is just drastically different or something.

Mace better than the sword? Seems to crush it in this video.

1 handed mace has the benefit of knockback secondary, which is helpful against certain enemies, especially 2 star warriors and the related mini boss.
