  • In this video, David Kolodny, co-founder of Wilbur Labs, shares how non-technical founders can lean on product and engineering to build and guide successful teams. You may be surprised to learn that not all startup founders are technical by the classic definition of “knowing how to code.” Rarely does a single person know how to code, lead a sales team, manage accounting, review legal documents, and so on. Not knowing how to code shouldn’t stop you from building a company.

What’s the first steps to take then if as a non tech person you can actually make your app come to life considering you have no funds but are up to give equity to bring the app to life?

Great question. The first step is getting a clear sense of exactly what the first version of your product is. From there, evaluate what may be available off the shelf vs what you need to build from scratch. If you have no funds available, leaning towards off the shelf solutions wherever possible will help, but if you do need to bring on an engineer you'll need to network and find someone who you can team up with that is excited about an equity-only option. This will limit your options some, but similar to hiring an engineer full-time or on contract, if you prioritize finding someone with relevant domain expertise and strong referrals, you’ll be in good shape.
