*How Hotel Rwanda want you to remember it:* Never forget the horrors of the Rwandan genocide and the consequences of inaction
*How I remembered it (at 15 years old at least):* Constantly shouting "cut the tall trees" in voice chat on Far Cry 2 multiplayer servers

Years ago I did an undergraduate assignment about this film - putting it in context of ethnicity and colonisation. You're right, it doesn't quite do justice to the complexities. And there were certainly minor mistakes for instance, the two women used as examples of Hutu and Tutsi - were quite different, not identical as they were supposed to be. But certainly the Belgians were responsible for the solidifying of ethnic identities during the colonial period. It doesn't say nearly enough about the political and economic situation of the mid-1990s - but then I guess it's a movie. But the economy had turned to shit due to the collapse of the coffee market - a somewhat artificial cash crop situation imposed by the Belgians. Unemployment was one of the major drivers of jealousy - and it certainly should have mentioned the fact that the churches were also encouraging the massacres. We could note that the Rwandans managed to kill more than half a million people at a much faster rate than the Germans managed to do it with all their advanced technology.

The French role in this is key and awfully under-mentioned when it comes to discussing Rwanda abroad, they weren’t just complicit, they were actively training and supporting Hutu militias and had french soldiers involved in fighting the RPF and gave them gunships and artillery and massive ammunition stores and they were actively promoting the militias to go commit massacres. This isn’t conspiracy or rumor its well documented by scholars

Paul Rusesabagina who this film is based on was in exile from Rwanda for criticism of the current government under Paul Kagame who took over after the genocide. In 2021 he wasn't just arrested he was tricked and kidnapped by the current Rwandan government. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention declared that Rusesabagina had been illegally kidnapped, tortured, and sentenced after an unfair trial. He was released in 2032 after much international condemnation of his sentencing

Man i gotta say I really like your videos Johnny. I don't see a whole of channels focusing on war films. A lot of people criticize Military/war movies for technical inaccuracies. And you have a nice calm grounded voice.

@@JohnnyJohnsonHistory yeah I feel the same way. I know a lot of historians like to be harsh on war movies for inaccuracies. But I still really enjoy war films because of the sheer hard work and craft that goes into it. Like yeah war films can be great introductions to certain historical events. Like when I watch Anzio 1968, The Bridge at Remagen, and a bridge too far 1977 it made me very curious to read about and watch documentaries and learn more about said historical events.

I’ve been recommending this movie to friends and family for years. I’m a huge history buff and they were all asking for films about war and they wanted the ones with the ugly truth. This was in my top 3 list with Uncut version of the pianist. There is something about these movies that there are times in my life I go back to watch them to remember how when you think you’ve hit the worst.. imagine being in those worlds. Reminder to be grateful yet awake and aware, always.

I saw this when it first came out years ago. I generally thought it did a pretty good job of dramatizing horrific story in an accessible package. Don Cheadle’s performance was very good. However my biggest complaint was the depiction of the Romeo Dallaire character. They made him seem like an unhinged drunk.
If anyone is interested in his first-hand account of what happened, I strongly recommend his book “Shake Hands With the Devil”.

I know how Nick Nolte got flack, for his generic portrayal of the Canadian Peacekeeper, which I thought he didn't do a bad job, they should have just named him Romeo Dallaire, and it would have been less, 'fictitious', which in the commentary track, they do mention Dallaire's book, Shake Hands With The Devil.
Still I still don't mind this feature.
Roy Dupuis did an exceptional job in portraying Dallaire, in Shake Hands With The Devil, which the commentary track said that they had Ed Harris in mind for the role, however his schedual conflicted, and they decided to go 'Canadian', thus Dupuis was chosen.
    Thanks for this, great again.
Take care, and all the best.

Surprise upload from this channel is always nice. You do a good job, Johnson. Great film choices in general and this film is especially important to remind people of. It's amazing how quickly we can forget even the most abominable violence and continue to lust after killing one another like barbarians. We aren't so evolved and enlightened as some might think. But I think film can shine a light into the darker corners of the mind and hopefully remind us that we are all human beings

This was in my opinion Don Cheadles' greatest performance. I never knew of the Rwandan genocide until I saw this film. After, I saw numerous news clips taken during and after the genocide, I was so heartbroken that the UN did little or nothing to stop it. When I heard about Paul getting arrested by the Rwandan government for crimes during the genocide, I was absolutely furious. He risked his life, his family's lives, friends and employees to save Hutus and Tutsis from the violence and now he's locked up behind bars for being a humanitarian.

This war was caused by a rich world intervention. It made the conflict much more violent than it otherwise would've, and the Tutsi and Hutu less likely to negotiate.
"With French assistance, Habyarimana set in motion a huge expansion of Rwanda's armed forces. From the time of the invasion, the army grew from a force of 9000 in October 1990 to 28,000 in 1991. France provided training staff, counter insurgency experts and huge quantities of weapons. It financed, and trained a presidential guard, an elite force from Habyarimanas home district. It also facilitated arms contracts with egypt and south africa. An estimated $100 million was spent on arms supplies, a vast sum for a tiny, impoverished country. Much of the money came from international funds - quick disbursing loans under a structural adjustment programme - intended for economic development"
