1950 Fender Super Amp: Naked and Thrashed but still SUPER !!

  • This video features the repair of a heavily used, but rare and wonderful 1950 Fender Super Amp.....favorite of Billy G. Although it had already been recapped, the tone was awful, the output transformer was flapping in the breeze, and the wiring looked like linguini after a hurricane ;) Through careful replacement of key capacitors, the tone was restored, the wiring replaced (as needed), and the OPT repaired. With the help of Ollie & Jack, we will audio test the final result, as well as open a splendid box o' tubes from Sweden, and share some valuable basic concepts. The icing on the cake, however, will be the final, very special video that has never been shared with viewers, featuring my late, beloved workshop partner and pal.

    Uncle Doug,
Seven years ago in the dead of winter i lost my wife in childbirth. We weren’t very young but we were newlyweds and she gave me a daughter to raise alone. That was a hard pill to swallow. I will leave the difficulty of enduring that to your imagination but suffice it to say that one scratches and claws at whatever they can to bring them comfort in those times. You did that for me. Somewhere in the fog of that i stumbled across a death capacitor video and was intrigued. Watching your videos was a great distraction and educational. I like everything about your videos… the ultra dry humor, the detail, the education in laymen’s terms that is nit condescending. I won’t go on much longer with my sob story but I thank you for putting the time and effort into sharing your knowledge and frankly a part of your reality with us. Everybody fights a battle and it’s nice to be able to enjoy someone else’s view of the world, even if it’s watching your cats sniff other people’s soup whiff blanketed packing jobs. Thanks for the hard work and i look forward to your next amp project.

Hi Uncle Doug. I'm going through all of your previous videos, which I watched when you posted them. I'd like you to know, and this ain't BS, the huge impact you've had on my life. I had to start working on my own eqip. years ago, as I live in the boondocks of upstate NY where there were only a handful of radio and TV guys who didn't know much about guitar amps. The worst thing was, my amps are a 1966 F. Vibrolux Rev. and a 67 pro reverb.I didn't have a clue, but I had no choice. I had to dive into the fray if I wanted to use them. I did know enough to realize these were quality amps that I needed to keep. I tinkered a bit but was afraid I would mess them, or myself up. When I discovered your channel you inspired me to learn. Now I feel comfortable working on my own, as well as other people's amps. I charge very little if anything for doing it but in any case, you were the one who got me to this point through your unselfish love of sharing your knowledge. Thank you.

Ever wonder why it’s so hard to find a 0.00001mF cap? Smaller values like that were just starting to be called picofarad (and nanofarad to replace sub 1mF or mmF)in the military/science and test equipment sector of the 50’s. For some reason, humans have a horrible time with decimal places and a succession of repeating numbers. I know I do.
So, for all of us that aren’t masters of tube equipment like Uncle Doug, it’s a 100pF cap.

Great to see you're back. Great video. Three months ago, I woke up one day with severe sudden hearing loss in my right ear (minus 60 dB!). Big panic! Cortisone infiltrations through the ear drum did not bring my hearing back. Sadly, I have to live with unilateral hearing loss for the rest of my life. Restoring and repairing amps will be a bit more difficult now, but I guess my trusty scope will help me out.

This is an amp that I have wanted to build for a while. I have only built the obligatory 5e3 amp in the past (successfully FWIW). Still watching your video but in my prior research, this looks like it is the 5B4 circuit layout with 3 higher MFD caps (20 MFD) as opposed to the 4 16 MFD caps in thge 5C4 and 5C5 layouts. Back to watching.. :)

Uncle Doug, just want to say thanks for helping me to understand finally how these ancient devices work. I'm sure, in another 70 years, this amp will sound as good as it does now-IF we have any tubes left.
In the last couple of months I have done another apprenticeship with your vids, and I will have to go back--too much to take in in one go.
I have been playing for 40 years (56), and never really understood why some things just sound better, and now I think I do. Electricity is scary, so I chose to work with 9v insteadof 240v, and tried to get my Marshall fix with a Noisy cricket into a 4X12, and thanks to you, I now am starting to understand how it works.
These circuits were all made perfect back then, and you are making sure they still work.
    Bravo.
