Bo the quality just gets better and better every episode... not that it was ever bad but this video blew me away. Seriously impressive man... keep up the amazing job!
A Very Scenic, Entertaining - Thorough - Review Bo! Your recommendations for more capacity, stretchy elastic bands around the internal//mesh pockets, and more magnetic modular attachments on the internal pockets were SPOT ON! Also the issues with the magnetic sternum strap and the need for a reinforced bottom have to be addressed! I don't know if I'm completely sold on modular attachment points and pouches, but I do prefer backpacks that have multiple applications so maybe they're a good idea. Another Fantastic review! Thank you!
Yes I agree with your review. Adaptability is key today and thinking about it I'm really liking the magnetic attachment points. Look fwd to your next review. Cheers!
while i am thinking about buying the Citadel pack, if you are into modularity, you might take a look at the Tasmanian Tiger Modular Pack 30. That is more of a hiking backpack (since TT is the military brand of Tatonka) with a big clamshell compartment, but you have pals/molle and velcro all over and in the bag to customize it entirely to your needs.
+Sew Much Black Thank you for the TTM-30 suggestion! :-)) I just saw a review of one, and the organization options are virtually limitless. An excellent pack with many uses. Right now I'm partial to the Citadel's hassle free magnetic attachment points, which seem secure, and quick to attach and remove accessories pouches very quietly. Velcro is usually very loud and a can be pain to remove when it's in wide, long pieces or in strips. That said I will definitely consider the TTM-30 for hiking and camping.
i will do a review of the tt m30 in the nearest future, using that pack m yself since christmas. its great, but as you said, its strengths are more in bog compartments and not so much for the office. thats the reason i am considering the citadel to protect my expensive technical gear.
I've been looking for a waterproof backpack and came across this review, and this backpack looks so cleaaaan! Though I wonder, in your time of testing, did it ever feel heavy or too big at times? And did the material ever feel 'too' stiff?
Good point. The neoprene would definitely be more practical in terms of loading, but then it wouldn't be this shiny silver. This bright silver actually is really helpful in dim lit rooms. With it you can see all your stuff quite well.
A very interesting bag with some good ideas but implementation seems a little rough. That minimal version is definitely better looking, where as the modular version should be implemented internally like the Goruck bags.
Man, have to agree with @alldayruckoff the quality of these videos is on point. The colour grading alone is worthy of praise but along side the quality of production, content and general insight... and don't think it gets much better than this. Put it this way, I've already chosen my next backpack but I still watched.
Thanks for doing the review! Backed this on KS, excited for the bag to arrive! Just a quick question, compared to the V4, do you prefer the detachable handle on the V4 or the detachable one on Citadel? Reason being there are interchangeable, wondering which will be a better one to get for the bag.
Hi - will the water resistant material still work while riding through heavy rain? Need to know as I’ll be using it to commute on motorbike with a laptop inside. Thank you!
I don't like so many organizational stuff in a bag, imo that forces the user to put things in certain way only. But I like the quality of this bag and the use of magnets :) Oh and once again great video.
Bo, can you please weigh the backpack (the minimal version, without the divider)? Their website doesn't have that information (which makes me suspect it's rather on the heavy side of things). What are those snap fasteners on the shoulder straps for? To remove the sternum straps? And a third thing: is the laptop compartment suspended from the ground?
I only have a mechanical scale. So it's not 100% accurate. By my unprecise measurements it is aprox. 1.9kg I will invest in a digital scale at some point. I actually wonder myself, what those snap fasteners are for. I haven't found out yet. The laptop compartment is not suspended, but it is slightly padded at the bottom. But not by much, so still be careful.
Hey Sara. Yes, I have found what they are supposed to do. They hold the sternum straps in place. So by opening the snaps you can just pull the sternum straps upwards and past the snaps to remove them.
Hi Bo! This bag is on my shortlist of the most versatile backpack to have. It's either this, the GR1 or that Arcido Akra. Do you know what's the Liter capacity of the Minimal? Is it anywhere near the 26L of the GR1 or the 35L of the Akra?
Bo ,hi isee your reviews they are perfect ,i want to ask you,the inside line equipment ,default 25,is it a good bag??why you dont review it?? Thanx panos
Nice review as always. Seems to be a good mix of organizational space and free space so use. One question i have is about the shoulder straps what are the buttons on the front of them for? they are right above the shoulder strap but i cant think of what they are for.
Looks very interesting... Probably have to take a second look! We also made some backpack/bag reviews to test some of them. Probably to inspire some of you?!
Awesome production, Bo. I've found all of your reviews really helpful in enabling my bag addiction. As far as the Black Ember Citadel, it looks awesome. Those straps though.... man they are hideous looking.
Thanks, mate. Glad that you find my reviews helpful. Do you mean the shoulder straps? I kinda like the design: They are really functional and comfortable. Also It's different than the usual design ;-) But that is just subjective of course
thank you for mentioning groceries!! nobody seems to mention this in the reviews, it's either just tech or tech/work and gym. I'm looking for a small bag 15-18L capacity (5'4" tall), minimalist, that can easily transition between work (15in. laptop + acc), gym, groceries, and even all 3 if it's one of those days. Any viewers have suggestions? thanks in advance!
THanks, Jess. with 15-18L you are a little limited. But I was very impressed by how much I can fit into the Farerdesign. Check out my "What bagsize do I need video" th-cam.com/video/tCOSIoRFLHs/w-d-xo.html and here ist the review th-cam.com/video/mT1eHqeQ0_M/w-d-xo.html
Such a great detailed review Bo! Can't wait to get my Citadel minimal pack, the bags are set to arrive in early June. Two side handles (great finishing touch of the bag, like you said) were luckily also included for early backers. Build quality really looks impressive, hope it's the same in real life :) I see that you have some Black Ember pouches. Do you have LRG Admin also?
Brilliant review Bo, and very professional if I may say. Thanks very much. I found myself liking the bag, apart from the unremovable sternum strap. Hmmm.
Thanks, Mate! Well it is removable in a way, but I have no idea if I would actually get it back on there. It's on this rail thingy. So with some force you can get it of, but I have no clue how to get it back on
Hey Bo! Love your reviews man, easily my fav reviewer! I just got my own black ember citadel minimal off your review, and it's everything I hoped it would be (I also ride a motorbike so the waterproofing if a huge plus). I did want to point out that the sternum strap is actually removable! You just undo the buttons at the top end of where it slides, and it will slide right off ^_^
Great reviews and overall fantastic videos! I love this bag but it is a little small for my needs. Considering the Aer Travel pack or the Life Behind Bars Peloton. Thanks for your reviews on both. Very helpful! I know they are very different but which do you prefer? Does one hold more than the other based on your experience? I ride a motorcycle every day and need a large bag to fit my gym cloths, laptop and maybe a couple of food items. Do you still use either?
Thank you very much. First and foremost, both bags are awesome, but I prefer the AER for one simple reason: It is a clamshell opening bag. This makes packing so much easier. That being said: I consider the AER a travel bag and not a everyday carry because for my 5'5 in height it is just too big. The Peloton on the other hand is clearly intended for the use on a bike (either motorbike or bicycle) and more managable as an everyday carry backpack. Furthermore it's rolltop design lets you adapt it's packing size to your needs and the peloton asphalt has straps to attach stuff to the outside. So for your usecase the peloton might be the better fit.
Bo Ismono Thanks for the quick response! The Peloton is labeled as 34 liters when rolled up (I think) and the Aer 33 liters but the Aer seems to be much larger. Is it actually?
The visual size difference is due to the distribution of the capacity. So basically the aer has 33l available right from the starting one space. The peloton expands in hight to achieve the 30ish liters. Which is why it is is smaller in standard (I. E. Not completely expanded) mode.
Hey Bo! I've got a somewhat beefy 15.6" laptop and was wondering if it would fit in the laptop compartment? Thanks for another super high quality video!
I assume with "beefy" you mean thick? I think that could be a problem. The laptopcompartment is rather designed for a thin macbook pro. You might need to ask Blackember directly to confirm. Which laptop do you have?
You can check out this video. th-cam.com/video/tCOSIoRFLHs/w-d-xo.html here you can see the citadel. You can fit a bunch of stuff in there, but it's not as spacious as you might anticipate
OMG Bo replied to me!!! I feel so important now! Long time fan =) Yeah, I've owned a v4 for 6 months now and just figured it out yesterday. You open the snap and the chest strap slides up past the end of the pipe rail releasing it. When the snap is closed it blocks the strap from moving past the end of the pipe rail embedded in the strap.
Hey Bo, GoRuck GR1 or Blackember Citadel? What do you think? (Should bei learning for biology Abitur, however, I had to watch your new video - great work, always)
Moin! That is a good question. I like both a lot. If you want more organizations then blackember. If you need a little bit more space, then goruck. And if you want a more urban and therefore office friendly design then go with the blackember. 😉 Good luck with Abitur. (bin froh dass ich damals Bio abgewählt habe, ok dafür hatte ich Chemie. War auch ganz schön schwer) 😂
Thank you very much. That's a flexfit cap from Revit. It's a motorcycle gear company. I can only wear flexfit caps, because with snap backs I look like Elmar Futt from bugs bunny 😂
Great review. I would've totally picked the minimal bag that you reviewed as opposed to the modular one with all the stuff on the outside. I'm here in Los Angeles and sometimes NYC. I just know that people would be jacking those modular pieces from me when my back is turned hahaha. Now I'm sure they aren't THAT easy to remove, but still. I just don't see myself putting anything of value in those outside boxes and that's kind of a waste for me.BTW, I can't wait for the AER TECH PACK REVIEW!!! So curious what you have to say about it.
Thanks, mate. Agreed, as someone who takes security quite serious I wouldn't put anything of value on those outside pouches. To be fair: You can't "just" remove them. But some of the pouches you still can easily open. It is still a cool concept though.
Hi Bo, a have a quick question for you. I saw a negative review on black embers Facebook page which concerns me about buying this bag. The user said that this bag is a dust and dirt magnet. Do you find that to be true?
Hey. No I don't have that much problems. But a black bag will always attract dust and dirt. Keep in mind that I know the Evergoods CPL24, and that one is a big dirt magnet, so I always keep that in perspective. So someone else might consider the blackember a dust magnet more than I would consider it to be
Bo Ismono thanks for your feedback. I currently have a RYU quick pack lux which is a good bag but it's a lint/dust magnet. It's really important that my next bag not have that problem. Thanks again and love your vids, keep up the great work!
I also ordered the minimal + additional straps and the camera insert. I will let you know as soon as it arrives; the last update was that there were some issues with the customs/export documentation, so it's been slightly pushed back.
it's an awesome bag but the first gen had some serious manufacturing/design flaws. im receiving my 3rd bag in a couple of weeks. the first 2 had critical strap failure. the first one lasted just over a year before i noticed that the bottom strap had begun to pull out of the seam anchor. it was hanging on by a thread. black ember has excellent customer service though, and sent a (slightly smaller) replacement pack. this one lasted much less than a year before the exact same thing started happening in the exact same spot. both bags are in perfect condition except for that one thing so im trying to figure out a way to fix the strap anchor issue without ruining the bag. anyway, this third one is the result of the second pack's strap failure. they have changed the design of the strap anchors since i got the second one, so we'll see how well it holds up to every day use.
derwen talia I hope they fixed this issue with the new design. Even though I have too many backpacks, I usually stick to one and use it for everything, so durability is a huge deal for me. It's reassuring to know that their customer service works so well, though.
bo, this bag was made for you but too bad that your criticism might make you move away from this bag. sometimes you have to appreciate a bag for what it is not what you wish.
You make me envious of the bags that get sent to you for review. Proverbial bag heaven! My bag game would be strong if I had your collection. Great review, as always, Bo!
Bo the quality just gets better and better every episode... not that it was ever bad but this video blew me away. Seriously impressive man... keep up the amazing job!
Thanks, Brian! That means a lot! Cheers, mate!
I’m concerned over the laser cut side holes; meaning if I had a handle there, I’m concerned the rubber laser cut hole could rip over time.
It's pretty tough material. It's basically the same material as those military rubber boats. I don't think that it will rip over time.
A Very Scenic, Entertaining - Thorough - Review Bo! I wish they had used that high quality neoprene kind stretchy material that lots of companies are using these days, for the internal pockets.
Good point. The neoprene would definitely be more practical in terms of loading, but then it wouldn't be this shiny silver. This bright silver actually is really helpful in dim lit rooms. With it you can see all your stuff quite well.
From where did you get the backpack to germany?
Or did it go through "das wundervolle Zollamt" because you ordered in the USA?
A very interesting bag with some good ideas but implementation seems a little rough. That minimal version is definitely better looking, where as the modular version should be implemented internally like the Goruck bags.

Oh and once again great video.
Yeah, sometimes too much organization can force you to adapt to the bag rather than the other way around. In worst cases it just confuses you.
Great review/reviews, very easy to follow and detailed. Looking forward to your next one.
Thanks, william! I'm glad that you like it!

New subscriber here. Thank you Bo for your hard work on these reviews! And thank you for helping me pick this backpack! It's my next purchase.

👊😉
Black ember must’ve been listening. The modular comes with one handle now😊
That's awesome. I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for letting me know!
nice bag, but i hope they take your negatives into account on the next production run. thanks for sharing.
Thanks, mate. It's a great bag, especially considering it is a really refreshing concept.
How's the protection in the laptop compartment? Is it suspended? Padded?
Hi Bo! What is the light at 3:46 ? Thanks!
Hey Bo, wonderful review like usual! I was wondering if you could tell me where you got that black jacket in your review at? Thanks!
Thanks, Nathan. That's a bomber jacket made by Schott NY. I don't know the exact name though
Can you add a pair of shoes, gym clothes and a MBP 15 in the bag? I am seriously considering in getting the Citadel for my daily cycling backpack!
You can check out this video. th-cam.com/video/tCOSIoRFLHs/w-d-xo.html here you can see the citadel. You can fit a bunch of stuff in there, but it's not as spacious as you might anticipate
The sternum strap is removable. That's what those snap closures on the shoulder straps are for.
Thanks, Jonathan. I was assuming this, but I was too affraid to break something or not being able to attach them again.
OMG Bo replied to me!!! I feel so important now! Long time fan =) Yeah, I've owned a v4 for 6 months now and just figured it out yesterday.
Good luck with Abitur. (bin froh dass ich damals Bio abgewählt habe, ok dafür hatte ich Chemie. War auch ganz schön schwer) 😂
Great review as always.W,ho makes the ball cap your wearing?
Thank you very much. That's a flexfit cap from Revit. It's a motorcycle gear company. I can only wear flexfit caps, because with snap backs I look like Elmar Futt from bugs bunny 😂
Your videos deserve more views
For the work u put into them
Make videos on other stuff apart from bags too
Thank you very much, Jaspreet. Yes, I'm working on other stuff as well. Motorcycle related stuff for instance
Ahh! The teaser at the end! I was deciding on the Aer Tech backpack so now I have to wait!
😉✌️
Hey bo where i can buy this.. can you put the link pls
Who makes the small yellow pouch you have in the bag (the one you're removing at 5:12 in the video)?
That's the pouch from Trakke. Check out my "extended EDC" video. I explain that case in that video 😉
Cool concept for sure!
Great video! What’s the small orange pouch you ad in your video?
Thanks, Adam. That's my exteded EDC. You can see it here th-cam.com/video/l29KJ1HDhL0/w-d-xo.html
Now am looking forward for this bag. Thanks for the review bo!
You're very welcome, Ahmad. Let me know how you like the bag, if you should get it
Really excited for the Aer Tech Pack Review!
You should be 😉✌️
Hi Bo, a have a quick question for you.
I have the Ryu around here as well. In comparison the Blackember definitely is not that bad of a dust magnet.
Thanks for watching my videos ;-)
If only it was 39 to 40 L for messenger bags I buy 5 of those for all my friends
Bo! What is the maximum size of laptop for the dedicated laptop compartment?
I think a 15" macbook pro is the limit. The macbook pro 15" touchbar fits quite snug, so I don't think that you can fit anything bigger
Very, very good reviews. Thank you so much! :)
Thanks for watching, Emit
Hey man! Great review, I just bought one for myself to review :) quick question - what bike light did you attach to your backpack?
Thanks, Kevin. I use this one at the moment. amzn.to/2G6gSm5
What about the Nomatic products?
They are on my wishlist, but I haven't had the chance yet
Keeping an eye for that one
BLACK EMBER = Ember Hitam
🙂
Thanks for your review 👍
Thanks for watching 😉 ✌️
Pls review the peak design everyday backpack. Pls
It's on my wishlist ;-)
Wow! This is my dream bag that i always wanted,.
Glad that you finally reviewed it, but its out of my budget. Great video! Keep up the good work
THanks, mate. It is quite pricey, but totally worth it. It's basically an investment for life. A good bag will always treat you well IMHO ;-)
Bo Ismono i agree! But still out of budget :) maybe in the future or maybe i will win a raffle 🙏
Thank you for the review. I'm not so convinced anymore on this backpack. Material is too stiff and the magnet thing is not really useful.
As always Bo you are killing it
Thanks, mate 😉 ✌️
Great video and also nice intro!
Thank you very much!
Just purchased citadel edition ships in May thank you and great taste cheers:)
That's awesome. Please let me know how you like the bag
great review👍 i really love the design of it
Thanks, mate!
What's the song in the beginning?
I get all my songs for copyright reasons from Epidemic sounds. I need to check my project file for the name of the song.
Bo Ismono any luck on the artist/song name? :)
Concrete Pilots (Cospe Remix) - Daniel Kadawatha
I haven't watched the whole thing yet but, I know its gonna be fucking awesome! thanks Bo!
Haha. I hope you like it once you have watched it all 😉✌️
Bo Ismono it was great. I hope you have some time in the future to review some of the mods.
Can't wait to get mine!
Cool. Let me know how you like the bag. Which version did you order?
I also ordered the minimal + additional straps and the camera insert. I will let you know as soon as it arrives; the last update was that there were some issues with the customs/export documentation, so it's been slightly pushed back.
Cool. I think you will like it. Fingers crossed that it will arrive soon
it's an awesome bag but the first gen had some serious manufacturing/design flaws.
im receiving my 3rd bag in a couple of weeks. the first 2 had critical strap failure. the first one lasted just over a year before i noticed that the bottom strap had begun to pull out of the seam anchor. it was hanging on by a thread.
black ember has excellent customer service though, and sent a (slightly smaller) replacement pack. this one lasted much less than a year before the exact same thing started happening in the exact same spot.
both bags are in perfect condition except for that one thing so im trying to figure out a way to fix the strap anchor issue without ruining the bag.
anyway, this third one is the result of the second pack's strap failure. they have changed the design of the strap anchors since i got the second one, so we'll see how well it holds up to every day use.
derwen talia I hope they fixed this issue with the new design.
True, but I think you took my verdict the wrong way. This is a contender for my favorite bags 2.0 video. Therefore I like it quite a lot 😉
Sometimes, less is more.
You make me envious of the bags that get sent to you for review. Proverbial bag heaven! My bag game would be strong if I had your collection. Great review, as always, Bo!
Don't be envious. Too many options can be confusing sometimes. And think of all the space that you need for all the bags 😂
Thanks, mate
