  • This gorgeous tropical foliage houseplant is a relative of the prayer plant but with larger, oblong to oval, showier leaves. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to care for Calathea. These plants come in a variety of variegated in several hues of green, white, silver, pink and purple with deep purple undersides. For the most common Calathea look, check out varieties like 'Makoyana', Lancifolia (aka Rattlesnake Plant), 'Medalion' or 'FlameStar'. For more unique varieties in texture and color, check out varieties like 'Network', 'Orbifolia', 'Yellow Fusion', or 'Beauty Star'.
    Calathea grow best in medium, indirect light and average, well-draining potting soil. Remember, they are sensitive to added elements in water so it's recommeneded to use filtered or distilled water for plants in this family!
    Pro Tip: it’s also a pet-friendly plant, according to the ASPCA.

    Perhaps its called that because the foliage is orb-shaped.

    I’ve been using the Systemic granules for over a year on all my Calatheas and it doesn’t seem to hurt them at all. They are thriving. It really seems to help with pests. I spray their leaves directly with Neem oil also and it doesn’t seem to damage them. Hope this helps.

    Leaving your water out overnight does NOT get rid of the chemicals.

    Can you use systemic granules to keep pests off of them?

    • @PetittiGardenCenters
      @PetittiGardenCenters  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can apply systemic granules to keep some unwanted insects at bay, but systemics do not control all houseplant pests including spider mites & fungus gnat (adults). Because these plants are so sensitive, they may show signs of stress with an application of systemic as well. We recommend using per package directions.

    Why do we need plant food. Can we not use a natural fertiliser like chicken manure etc or does it need to be plant food

    If water drains thur really fast do i need to repot

    • @PetittiGardenCenters

      Fast draining water is a good indicator that your Calathea roots are taking up most of the soil space, so yes, it is a good time to transplant it into the next size pot, now. Try to do this by mid-month, use fresh potting mix, slightly moistened so it is easier to work with. Don't be afraid to gently loosen the plant's root ball before repotting.
