I had a lifelong friend who passed. This was played at his funeral. Hearing it always reminds me of him. RIP, Anthony. Edit: how I finally figured out how to lose weight. (No links, no pitches) I found a free TDEE calculator online. I punched in my info, including a target weight. Calories are like coats. You need so many to keep warm and alive, but when I never thought about it, I went out dressed in 272 coats (my weight @ 5'8"). Now I know how many I need. Even if I eat too much on occasion, my mind KNOWS how many calories I need and I generally follow it well.
Iz is our Icon here in Hawaii. He was a Beautiful soul that spread that Aloha through his music & his personality, funny guy yet Serious about what’s important. Our Land, Ocean & Ohana. We all honor him always @ our Ohana Celebrations by playing his Awesome Music. 😎🤩❤️🙏✊🤙
I get all teared up when he starts the humming at the beginning. By far my favorite version. I love seeing your reactions to the songs I grew up loving. It's so much fun to hear someone else talking about all the things that makes a song so amazing. I really like when your wife joins too. Maybe have her join one song a day or week?
Braddah Iz was a gentle giant of a man. Such a beautiful voice that just flows from his body. He was the 'voice of Hawaii' and it's a tragedy that we lost him too early 💔💙
Hey Krizz, IZ did indeed pass away and that was his ashes being spred in the end. This song is a demo, a one take recording done at 3am. The sound engineer gave IZ a 15min deadline and he knocked it out of the park.
Kamakawiwoʻole struggled with obesity throughout his life,at one point weighing 757 pounds while standing 6 feet 2 inches tall.Kamakawiwoʻole endured several hospitalizations because of his weight. With chronic medical problems including respiratory and cardiac issues, Kamakawiwoʻole died at age 38 in the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu at 12:18 a.m. on June 26, 1997, from respiratory failure.
It’s an iconic cover of this song. Sadly he passed but his voice lives on . I heard some young people doing his version the other day and it made me smile.
for his name, the accent is on the 2nd syllable and in Hawaii 'W' is pronounced as 'V'. So it's basically kaMAKA-vivo-ole. You should give a listen to his recording of Hawaii '78. There was a translation mistake in the chorus but it's a wonderful song that means a lot to the Hawaiian people. Another great song is 'White Sandy Beach'. Izzy was famous in Hawaii, and was the first Hawaiian artist to go platinum. When he died he was the first non-politician to lay in state at the capitol and flags were lowered to half-staff for him.
Yes, me, too, weight has been a lifelong burden. At 75 now I have gradually become tolerant of the details in life. Iz skipped around instead of following the original lyric, but his voice is deeply touching. He died young. I love seeing scenes in Hawaii. I was on Kauai for my first hysband's R&R during the war in Viet Nam.
You are reacting to my all time favorite song in the world. This is my go to when im down or angry to calm down. Its the most peaceful song in the world to me and other covers are fantastic of it but IZ is something special.
My wife and I were sitting on the front porch of Tahita Nui in Hanalei, Kauai and IZ was playing (did not know at the time) eating the best meal we had anywere in Hawaii. A very memorable evening indeed.
This song always gets me. I love the original versions of the two songs he combined to make this one, but Iz did it in such a perfect way. He played and sang with a tender lightness that belied his size. He had other great songs, but this song alone is a legacy.
I kind of always felt like when I seen him sing this or heard it that maybe he was looking towards the future when he leaves the Earth that maybe he'll go to a better place a more beautiful place a place where nothing will tie you down or bog you down nothing will hurt you anymore you'll be free I could be wrong that's just my opinion❤😊
The world lost IZ in '97. They day they scattered his ashes in the water every big rig on the island drove by and the drivers lay on their horns. It sounded as though the island itself was wailing over the loss of a great man.
wow you spoke of cultural music👍 kia ora I'm a Maori wahine from Aotearoa new zealand, we have many many talented musicians and singers embracing our reo (language)into their music. Here's one singer to checkout Stan Walker and his song Maori Ki Te Ao which is helping to showcase the plight of Maori culture and people versus the corrupt current government in 2025. From 'colonisation', Maori people (not all tribes) managed to compose what is called the (treaty of waitangi) 'Tiriti O Waitangi'. It was composed in OUR language, with OUR thought processes embracing past, present, future, regarding things like sovereignty, and the inherent right to traditional food gathering of OUR resources, to name but two. Our old people were not stupid in their wording of the Treaty between Maori and 'The Ctown'. Fast forward to 2025. NZ government (not the Crown - yet) are STILL trying to take our land for their white profit margins via government. By now our Maori people have had to fight their english-translated-version over and over and over by visually walking from the top of the north island down to parliament in wellington especially Dame Whina Cooper❤ this is one example. We have a plethora of talented Maori and Polynesian musicians who help to highlight 'things' going on. Stan Walker is one of our Maori stars, he's a good one to start with🤍Arohatinonui ki Aotearoa ✌️
You mentioned Disney Pixar shorts, Fun fact The Pixar short Lava that aired along side Inside Out in 2014 was about Israel "Iz" and his wife Marlene Kamakawiwo'ole.
He was also called "Braddah IZ". Thank you for sharing this video. This song has also been played on several Hollywood motion pictures. I think you'll enjoy His soundtrack "Braddah IZ". Keep up the great reactions 🤙
The story goes that Iz had the urge to record this in the middle of the night and called his engineer. They met up at the studio and laid it down in one take... That's called destiny.
There’s a live version of Kaleohano by IZ that’s a must watch. It was shortly before his death that’s incredible. Not the best audio or video, but it’s so emotional. The crowd and band were all in tears.
I'll be 53 on March 12 and have had my battle with my weight over the passed 12 years, so i can relate. I'm 5' 11", at my heaviest I was 340 lbs, prediabetic, until i kicked my PEPSI addiction, and took care a few other bad habits and health issues. As of this moment I've lost 88 lbs and my sugar is now back down almost to normal levels, about to the point of getting off of the diabetes meds. Keep at it. I know genetics can get in the way for some, and some are just naturally big, but it can be done and you will succeed.
Just live, don't waste your life worrying about it am over weight I retired when I turned 62 I didn't think I would make it to 65 to retire and now 16 years late at 78 i am still here worrying don't change anything just enjoy life the biggest enemy we have is own mind you can do all that weight loss stuff and still get hit by a bus. Peace out
BEAUTIFUL COVER of this song - RIP, IZ!!! Someone else who did a GREAT COVER of this song: Eva CASSIDY!! RIP to EVA, TOO! :( BOTH versions get me SUPER TEARY!!! ENJOY, KRIZZ!!
You should react to the Samoan metal band "Shepherds Reign" and their song "Le Manu"! They fuse metal with traditional Polynesian sounds and create something truly unique! That song has 3.8 mill views on YT.
My fav version of this song, but I've been to several funerals where it was playing, so it makes me sad. Always makes me think of Dr Greene from ER too lol
I love this version on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It's poignant. In Wizard of Oz but it was more wishful, thinking of a better place, a better life. I'm totally with you with the weight battle. I too, have struggled with it all my life. But I'm working and it's slowly coming off. I do notice that being overweight seems more acceptable today. I saw a college basketball game the other day, where one of the women playing was significantly overweight. I've seen cheerleaders also heavier than what we used to see and I'm happy there is that acceptance now where talent wins out over body type.
Kamakavivo'ole (kah mah kah veevo olay) the canoe that is his ashes were poured from at the end is the famous Hokulea (hoh koo lay uh) which has traveled all over the world. There is another video of this song that incorporates somewhere over the rainbow with wonderful world. I like it better.
I love white sandy beaches, sea of love, Kaleohano, starting all over again, Hawaii 78, lover of mine E ala E, you dont know me. His wife would beg people to please not bring him food. It’s considered rude to not eat food people bring you. He had a beautiful wife and daughter. What you are seeing at the end is his funeral, they scattered his ashes in the bay where he grew up and lived. The food killed him. A new comer that is Samoan is Iam Tongi he won American Idol in 2023 or 2024. He is smooth like Iz and is in his early 20s but if he doesnt get his appetite under control may meet the same fate as Iz and pass early due to morbid obesity. And i would hate that as he has a lot to offer the musical world.
Weight, count calories. If u want to weigh 200lbs eat no more then 2000 daily calories. Carbs/sugars lead to crashes making one want to eat/snack. Balance those carbs with protein and fats to counter the spikes. Low fat things sound good but in most cases r not. U need those fats to counter the carbs so be cautious. Caloric intake amounts is more important then what those calories r. The type of calories is more geared toward body type. Try ur best to eat protein, fats and whole foods. Processed food including smoothies and green drinks r not as healthy as u might think, along with alt/nut milks. Anything processed forces our body to try to store as much as possible leading to fat storage. How many almonds make up that glass of milk or fruits & veg in the smoothies? Would u eat all of that in one sitting? It’s why it’s better to eat those fruits & veg whole. If eating fast food make that double cheese a triple or 4x4 and forgo the fries. The extra protein will balance out the carbs & sugars from the buns & toppings.
The end is showing his ashes being spread over the ocean
He passed at the age of 35. A beautiful tribute when they spread his ashes.
He got up in the middle of the night and called a friend who had a studio and said he wanted to record a song.... did it in one take
FACTS

Every time I watch, I feel more empowered. You’ve made me realize that small, consistent actions are the key to long-term success.

Iz was a gift.
We miss him.
everyday
The ending is his burial at sea, he was AMAZING
I get all teared up when he starts the humming at the beginning. By far my favorite version. I love seeing your reactions to the songs I grew up loving. This was my late mother's absolute favorite version of this song! I can't listen to it without crying!
Sorry for the loss of your mother. I love this version also.
we played this at my sons funeral, same.
Cry away...
Let it flow
My little sister died on Thanksgiving 2024
I shared this song with family that night
Tears filled the house like an ocean
me too😢
RIP Izzy..Your ears abou to be blessed by this beautiful soul.
Cry away...
Let it flow
My little sister died on Thanksgiving 2024
I shared this song with family that night
Tears filled the house like an ocean
Deeply sorry for your loss...

Dude's a legend in Hawaii!

I lived in Hawaii from 2000 to 2003, such beautiful nature and wonderful people 🥰🤙
He woke up with a song written in his mind. Called a guy who could record him. Ran over, and this is it.
This is a cover. But like Johnny Cash, he made this song his.
IZ LIVES
Voice of angel 👼
Heart as big as the sky. 🌄

more power to you, just never quit trying, God Bless.

Best version of “Over The Rainbow” ever
Haters gonna hate. But as the saying goes, "Those who mind don't matter. And those who matter don't mind"
Another culture worth checking is the band HU from Mongolia

I love seeing scenes in Hawaii. I was on Kauai for my first hysband's R&R during the war in Viet Nam.
I really love the version where Somewhere over the Rainbow is mixed with What a Wonderful World... 🥰
I've always loved this. Perfect voice, very emotional

The Man Himself BRADDAH IZ!!!!!
As much as I adore this version, Eva Cassidy's version tears my soul apart. It's intense, it's quiet, it's gorgeous.
Iz was an absolute gift to us. Unfortunately we only got him for a short time.
I love this version and there is another version I also like is from an Australian the Late Billy Thorpe.
His version was recorded in one take
IZ🙏💔🤙

his version of "you don't know me is also terrific}
This song makes you heart smile! Love Iz. An amazing singer gone way too early! Also the shots on the beach and boats were from his funeral!
There at the end with all the people.. he has died -it’s his funeral scattering his ashes after he live in State, there is a statue of him
The thing about weight is true, I'm 10 years behind you, but I feel it. We can get where we need to be, thank you, and carry on.
Beautiful version He needs to check out Eva Cassidy’s Over the Rainbow 🌈
💝💝💝 R.I.P.
Absolutely beautiful I'd love this since the first time I heard it and even more when I watch it in the video❤
I never cared for the original song. But this man's version brings chills and tears to my eyes.

I never had a weight problem but all of my adult life I attempted to walk or run 15,000 to 20,000 steps per day.
In the hawaiian language all syllables are 2 letters long and you pronounce every letter
I think this was used for an intro clip to a movie!
It was in the movie 50 first dates
There is an video of his life

Iz wanted to lose weight, didn’t want to die like his father from weight complications and heart disease. He didn’t make it!!!
0:03 Cheeee huuuuuuuuu
I never liked the song until hearing him sing it.
You kinda wrong for that thumbnail Krizz!
Please listen to Hua Chenyu. Select videos with English subs if possible. Start with Nunchucks, then Fake Monk. You won’t be sorry.

One of the greatest recordings ever in my mind
