Grocery shopping during Venezuela’s food shortages

  • This week Venezuelans are lining up to validate their signatures on a recall referendum for President Maduro. Among the reasons for Maduro's unpopularity is that more and more people are starting to wonder where their next meal is coming from. These days, those who have enough Venezuelan currency (now trading at 1,000 bolivars to the dollar on the black market) to buy food often have a hard time finding any.
    We meet three Caracas residents who show us what they've got to eat.

      Yup. I was there. It wasn't quite THIS bad, but it was more the same thing. The "solidarity bag" is basically starvation rations.
      1 kg of rice is ~4000 calories
      1 kg of beans is ~3000 calories
      The other stuff might add another ~3000 to be generous.
      That means that your "bag" has less than a week of nutrition for an adult to stay healthy.

    • @bonniebrock5109

      Should be called 'Maduro/His government loyalty bags'. That is truly pathetic that people will take, out of desperation that small amount ,sign up for loyalty, just to not slowly starve to death. Maduro should be tried for Crimes Against Humanity on his own people. In no way am I faulting 100% the average decent Venezuelan.

      @realitycheck1086 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pwrserge83 Nah - I do recall supermarkets not having some goods, like sugar - so we had stamps for sugar rations. And queues - one thing soviet union was known for is long queues, something that the west experiences only when a new star wars or iphone comes out - haha.
      Otherwise though - seriously, I don't recall people starving in the soviet union. Some goods for missing, yes - so they were rationed by the government. Otherwise, as far as surviving is concerned, there was enough food to survive - even in the worst of times. During blockade... it was much worse.
      I keep thinking that Venezuela is actually closer to the blockade phase, given the western sanctions. Now you have this aid fiasco - where opposition smartly says, if aid gets in, we'll proclaim the government lost control of its borders and is no longer in power. If the aid doesn't get through, we'll proclaim the government is starving its own people. Western sanctions were imposed using the exact same logic. We'll stop all good shipments/us currency - and then proclaim that the government is starving its own people.
      Fascinating stuff.

      @Elchapo Junior The EU countries you mentioned have a well managed private sector with half the cooperate tax rate of the US. In fact, many cooperation's stash their earnings in Netherlands. It also does not help the the US is by far the biggest contributor to NATO. Our military spending is 4% our GDP while their military spends roughly 1% to 0.5% GDP on military. We are basically finding their military and development. The only thing socialist about those countries is their large social security net. Their is no _public/goverment ownership of large companies or entities_. No marxism. None of that.

      The food shortages is caused by price controls from the government, it's as simple as that. What the government has done is that they have price fixed the price of food and they have set to low prices. They think this is good because then everyone can afford food, but what happens in reality is that no one will produce food since you can't make a profit producing food anymore. The result is that people are starving instead since no food is produced. This is classic and if you had studied history you would know that this has happened so many times before. Many other communist countries in the past have tried the same thing with the same devestatting results. Open a history book and read about Mao Zedong and China, or Sovjet for that matter, maybe you will learn something. This is indeed socialism/communisms fault. You should never price fix the price of a commodity, the market should decide the price because then it will not be to low or to high, it will be just right which is very important or else it will cause devestating problems in the economy. Let's say they price fixed the price to high, then everyone would also starv since no one could afford the food. That's why you shouldn't price fix at all, because you will always get it wrong. The market should decide the price, because then the right "true price" will be discoverd by the market. The market will find the equlibriium price which will benefit both producers and consumers at the same time. Do you understand?

      "If you're not a Socialist Party member they starve you" That's the antithesis of socialism. We don't (Most of us). If you're going to call us ignorant (not blatantly, but passively), then don't be ignorant yourself in generalizing a country that has 320 million people. Not all Americans believe that this is the result of socialism. This is the result of poor governing and management of assets, such as food and money. Most Americans are aware that there are socialist ideals already implemented within out government, and most want more socialistic ideals as it creates equality, that's what socialism is about, co-ownership and cooperation in the handling of goods and assets. The result of socialism relies solely on the publics willingness to adopt said principals and whether or not the government is stupid enough to not be able to implement said policies and govern them accordingly. Please, don't be a hypocrite.

    I'm surprised that there are no street stalls selling produce. They are all dependent on the grocery store. This not a knock on the Venezuelan diet, thier diet is too specialized and maybe a little too rich with high processed food. As an Asian, the man saying that the fish head was for the dogs to eat kind of tells it all. Venezuela used to a rich country eating rich oily that has a lot of animal proteins. My parents home are from a poorer country in southeast Asia where leafy greens, rats and insects are in the diet. I think for the short run and maybe the long run, they should go for fast growing and low energy foods like mustard greens, native Venezuelan vegetables and if they're up to it, the low level animal proteins (insects, smaller animals, and common "jungle" meat instead of the highly processed foods like fruit juices, milk, white flour)

    You know what I don't get? (and I come from Brazil, a third world country too) What about those luxury cars on the street? in the first 20 seconds I saw a Toyota Hilux, a Toyota Corolla, Chevrolets... These are not cheap in Latin America. We used to think that Argentina was in a deep crisis and everyone was suffering, then I went there last July and it's as normal as Brazil. People go to the mall, people eat McDonald's, people buy cars and homes. The news tend to report only the economical downfall and not the normal work/shop life and because of that we think that everybody's starving. I'm sure the situation is more serious in Venezuela, but I'd like to see news on the middle-class/rich.
